Tapping The Grapevine: A Closer Look At Word-Of-Mouth As A Recruitment Source, Greet Van Hoye, Filip Lievens Mar 2009

Tapping The Grapevine: A Closer Look At Word-Of-Mouth As A Recruitment Source, Greet Van Hoye, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

To advance knowledge of word-of-mouth as a company-independent recruitment source, this study draws on conceptualizations of word-of-mouth in the marketing literature. The sample consisted of 612 potential applicants targeted by the Belgian Defense. Consistent with the recipient-source framework, time spent receiving positive word-of-mouth was determined by the traits of the recipient (extraversion and conscientiousness), the characteristics of the source (perceived expertise), and their mutual relationship (tie strength). Only conscientiousness and source expertise were determinants of receiving negative word-of-mouth. In line with the accessibility-diagnosticity model, receiving positive employment information through word-of-mouth early in the recruitment process was positively associated with perceptual …

India Unleashed, Nirmalya Kumar

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Corporations in the developed world increasingly see India as a high-growth market and its companies as acquirers of their assets, global competitors, partners for enhancing the competitiveness of their global value chain and a source of new energy and dreams for the world economy. How did this all happen? The author shares the essence of what he learned from 10 trips to India to interview more than 30 CEOs and top executives who are unleashing the new global power of Indian firms.

Risk, Firm Heterogeneity, And Dynamics Of Fdi Entry, Pao Li Chang, Chia-Hui Lu Mar 2009

Risk, Firm Heterogeneity, And Dynamics Of Fdi Entry, Pao Li Chang, Chia-Hui Lu

Research Collection School Of Economics

We study the dynamics of FDI entry under a setting with firm heterogeneity and FDI uncertainty. The risk of FDI failure depends positively on the complexity of production technology, negatively on the quality of infrastructure in the host country, and evolves over time with the extent of knowledge diffusion. The incorporation of FDI uncertainty leads to a non-monotonic relationship between technology complexity and the timing of FDI entry: firms with intermediate technology levels lead the first wave of FDI, which helps lower the investment uncertainty facing subsequent investors and induces a wider range of FDI entry in the second period. …

Feasibility Of One–Dedicated–Lane Bus Rapid Transit ⁄Light–Rail Systems And Their Expansion To Two–Dedicated–Lane Systems: A Focus On Geometric Configuration And Performance Planning, Mti Report 08-01, H.-S. Jacob Tsao, Wenbin Wei, Agus Pratama Mar 2009

Jacob Tsao, Wenbin Wei, Agus Pratama

Mineta Transportation Institute

This report consists primarily of two parts, the first on feasibility and the next on space minimization. In the section on feasibility, we propose the concept of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) or light–rail system that effectively requires only one dedicated but reversible lane throughout the system to support two-way traffic in the median of a busy commute corridor with regular provision of left–turn lanes. Based on key ideas proposed in that section, the section on space minimization first addresses how to implement a two–dedicated–lane BRT or light–rail system with minimum right–of–way width and then proposes ways to expand a …

Tops-Only Domains, Shurojit Chatterji, Arunava Sen Mar 2009

Tops-Only Domains, Shurojit Chatterji, Arunava Sen

Research Collection School Of Economics

In this paper we consider the standard voting model with a finite set of alternatives A and n voters and address the following question: what are the characteristics of domains D that induce the property that every strategy-proof social choice function f : Dn → A satisfying unanimity, has the tops-only property? We first impose a minimal richness condition which ensures that for every alternative a, there exists an admissible ordering where a is maximal. We identify conditions on D that are sufficient for strategy-proofness and unanimity to imply tops onlyness in the general case of n voters and in …

Intergenerational Earnings Mobility In Singapore And The United States, Irene Y. H. Ng, Xiaoyi Shen, Kong Weng Ho Mar 2009

Intergenerational Earnings Mobility In Singapore And The United States, Irene Y. H. Ng, Xiaoyi Shen, Kong Weng Ho

Research Collection School Of Economics

This study compared intergenerational earnings mobility in Singapore and the United States by replicating the sample criteria in the Singapore National Youth Survey on the U.S. Panel Study of Income Dynamics. The mean estimated earnings elasticities are almost identical: 0.26 in Singapore and 0.28 in the United States. Transformed to 0.44 and 0.47 respectively to reflect permanent status, mobility in the two countries is moderately low compared internationally. The finding of similar mobility is not surprising given that the two countries have similar economic realities, welfare systems, education regimes, and labor structures. Policy makers face the daunting challenge of overcoming …

Families And Childhood Cancer: An Exploration Of The Observations Of A Pediatric Oncology Treatment Team, Amanda Douglas Harrington, Thomas G. Kimball, Roy A. Bean Mar 2009

Families And Childhood Cancer: An Exploration Of The Observations Of A Pediatric Oncology Treatment Team, Amanda Douglas Harrington, Thomas G. Kimball, Roy A. Bean

Faculty Publications

The authors propose that families facing childhood cancer inadvertently become part of a distinct cultural group. To better train clinicians working with these families, this study was conducted as a phenomenological exploration of the common experiences of those who work with, and participate in, this "culture of cancer" (i.e., members of a pediatric oncology treatment team that includes medical family therapists). Two primary themes emerged from the data: culture of change and relationships. A qualitative description of medical family therapists as part of the treatment team was also developed. Insight into this culture and recommendations for family therapists working in …

First And Subsequent Visits To Montana: A Behavioral Analysis , Norma Nickerson, Dylan Boyle Mar 2009

First And Subsequent Visits To Montana: A Behavioral Analysis , Norma Nickerson, Dylan Boyle

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

Interviews of nonresident repeat vacationers to Montana told the story of their very first visit to Montana. Seventy percent came to Montana and visited either Yellowstone or Glacier National Park. Thirty percent came originally for business, VFR, or passing through. All of these visitors felt the need to return to Montana. This report discusses the first and subsequent visits to Montana. Marketing implications of this study suggest that Yellowstone, specifically, and Glacier secondly, should be used to draw first time visitors to Montana. Other first time visitors are drawn to Montana for specific activities such as fishing, skiing, hunting, backpacking, …

What Does An Archivist Do?, Nadia Nasr Feb 2009

What Does An Archivist Do?, Nadia Nasr

Staff publications, research, and presentations

By definition, an archivist is an individual responsible for appraising, acquiring, arranging, describing, preserving, and providing access to records of enduring value1. A record is a written or printed work of a legal or official nature that may be used as evidence or proof. It is data or information that has been fixed on some medium; that has content, context, and structure; and that is used as an extension of human memory or to demonstrate accountability. Records are often created or received in the course of individual or institutional activity and set aside (preserved) as evidence of that activity for …

Satellite-Based Fusion Of Image/Inertial Sensors For Precise Geolocation, Neil R. Jesse Feb 2009

Satellite-Based Fusion Of Image/Inertial Sensors For Precise Geolocation, Neil R. Jesse

Theses and Dissertations

The ability to produce high-resolution images of the Earth’s surface from space has flourished in recent years with the continuous development and improvement of satellite-based imaging sensors. Earth-imaging satellites often rely on complex onboard navigation systems, with dependence on Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking and/or continuous post-capture georegistration, to accurately geolocate ground targets of interest to either commercial and military customers. Consequently, these satellite systems are often massive, expensive, and susceptible to poor or unavailable target tracking capabilities in GPS-denied environments. Previous research has demonstrated that a tightly-coupled image-aided inertial navigation system (INS), using existing onboard imaging sensors, can provide …

Cross-System Profile Of Maine's Long Term Support System: A New View Of Maine's Long Term Services And Supports And The People Served, Eileen Griffin Jd, Julie T. Fralich Mba, Catherine Mcguire Bs, Louise Olsen, Stuart Bratesman Mpp, Kathy Bubar, Romaine Turyn Feb 2009

Cross-System Profile Of Maine's Long Term Support System: A New View Of Maine's Long Term Services And Supports And The People Served, Eileen Griffin Jd, Julie T. Fralich Mba, Catherine Mcguire Bs, Louise Olsen, Stuart Bratesman Mpp, Kathy Bubar, Romaine Turyn

Disability & Aging

This document provides a new way of looking at Maine's long term services and supports, with an emphasis on developing a common approach for describing and analyzing long term services and supports across programs. A conscious effort was made to organize this profile around the populations served rather than the programs serving them. For that reason, the profile captures information on all of the services accessed by each population group, not only those services administered by a particular program. This broader view provides important information about the full range of service utilization for each population group.

The Approximation Rule: Examining An Alternative To The “Best Interest Of The Child” Custody Standard, Elizabeth Archer Feb 2009

The Approximation Rule: Examining An Alternative To The “Best Interest Of The Child” Custody Standard, Elizabeth Archer

Theses and Dissertations

While the Best Interest of the Child (BIOC) standard has been used since the 1970’s, alternatives such as the Approximation Rule have recently been proposed to remediate perceived weaknesses in BIOC. This study examines the applicability of the Approximation Rule using cross-sectional data collected from 517 children (age 10-18) of divorced parents using the Co-Parenting Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ). Data for all co-parenting and parenting variables (n = 517) were analyzed to determine relationships by time since divorce and custodial relationship. Physical custody was associated with significant differences in children’s’ ratings of both co-parenting and parenting effectiveness. Results for time since …

Recruitment And Retention Of Personnel Directing Rural Libraries: A Review Of Literature In Preparation Of A Study For Idaho, Thomas Ivie Feb 2009

Recruitment And Retention Of Personnel Directing Rural Libraries: A Review Of Literature In Preparation Of A Study For Idaho, Thomas Ivie

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

“There is an assumption that the public library is predominantly an urban institution, and while that depends on how the words ‘urban' and ‘rural' are defined” (Sager, p. 5), the statistics reveal that the majority of public libraries tend to exist in towns or population centers of under 25,000 (Vavrek, May 1983, p. 966). Whether or not one agrees with the projection that “…most public libraries, even the smallest, will be led by professional managers” (Kirwin, p. 7), the library and information science profession needs to increase its knowledge about those among its ranks who manage the majority of the …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study investigated the availability and use of ICTs in collection management in university and special libraries in the Niger-Delta region, Nigeria. The study uses an ex post facto descriptive design, with a questionnaire to collect data from users, library staff, and heads of libraries. From the target population of 27,730, the researcher sampled 845 subjects through simple random sampling technique. Descriptive statistics were used for the research questions while chi-square statistic was employed to test the research hypotheses in the study. The hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. There was a significant difference in the availability of …

Commentators On Clinton On China Feb 2009

Commentators On Clinton On China

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Following Hillary Clinton’s visit to Asia, there have been a range of commentaries on her new approach to China. Clinton’s downplay of that standard gambit of Sino-American relations, human rights, has pleased some commentators and maddened others. Here’s a selection of five ways of looking at her China visit:

1) A Missed Opportunity, Merle Goldman at the Boston Globe:

The Charter 08 episode in China reveals widespread dissatisfaction with China’s authoritarian market economy, including those who are the supposed beneficiaries of China’s political model. Their participation in the Charter 08 movement may be attributed not only to worsening economic conditions …
