The Commercialization Of College Sports, Richard C. Crepeau
The Commercialization Of College Sports, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
At the 2009 NCAA Convention in January the president of the organization, Dr. Myles Brand, gave his State of the Association Address. The subject was the dangers of commercialism in intercollegiate athletics. Reading Dr. Brand's address on the brink of the annual epidemic of March Madness is, to the say the least, a mind-blowing exercise. It is either the product of unfettered chutzpah or incredible naïveté. The tone and content of the address offer considerable evidence of each.

In November 2008, Pakistan entered into a stand by arrangement with the IMF to support the country’s stabilization program and fill in the external financing gap. Pakistan has successfully drawn down the first two tranches of this loan. Most of the stabilization indicators are showing improvement and if the present efforts to maintain the fiscal discipline, curtail borrowings from the State Bank of Pakistan and build up foreign exchange reserves remain intact it is likely that IMF will be able to complete the forthcoming reviews successfully and the agreement should reach an orderly termination point by June 2010. While the …

Collaborative Writing In Wikis: Insights From Culture Projects In Intermediate German Classes, Nike Arnold, Lara Ducate, Claudia Kost
Collaborative Writing In Wikis: Insights From Culture Projects In Intermediate German Classes, Nike Arnold, Lara Ducate, Claudia Kost
Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
This presentation reports the findings of a study designed to investigate the collaborative writing and revision processes of foreign language learners in a wiki environment. Specifically, it is based on a comparison of two wiki projects in intermediate German classes in which small groups of students used wikis to collaborate on a project based on cultural and historical topics related to a novel. The archived versions of the wiki were analyzed for the amount, type, and quality of revisions. In addition, an end-of-semester survey was administered to assess learner attitudes towards the project and perceptions of the writing process.

Insights Into The Cultivation And Sustainability Of Academic Library Digitization Programs: Success Factors And Challenge Threats, Cory K. Lampert, Jason Vaughan
Library Faculty Presentations
Many academic libraries have invested time and resources into the creation of library digitization programs, and at this point in time there is a growing need to evaluate the impact and success of these efforts. What factors determine whether institutions achieve goals and experience long-term success or face challenges in staffing, funding, and strategic vision? This poster presents the results of a comprehensive survey administered to ARL (Association of Research Libraries) Library digitization managers to help provide a cross section of the current state of a diverse group of programs. Presented along with the survey results, the authors delve deep …

Academic Status And The Doctoral Degree Requirement For Promotion Of Librarians In Nigerian University Libraries, M.O. Salaam, F.N. Onifade
Academic Status And The Doctoral Degree Requirement For Promotion Of Librarians In Nigerian University Libraries, M.O. Salaam, F.N. Onifade
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Librarians in federal universities in Nigeria have had academic status since 1993. They have a research and publication requirement for promotion, and are prominent in the professional literature. While the terminal degree remains the master's in library and information science, it is increasingly common for a doctorate to be required for librarian promotion in Nigerian universities. One problem with this requirement is the small number of doctoral programs in library science that are available. A survey of academic librarians was conducted. A questionnaire sought information on whether or not Nigerian university libraries have introduced the PhD as a requirement for …

Quiz Winners And A New Quiz
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
We received many correct answers to last week’s Frivolous Friday quiz. For the prize of a copy of China’s Brave New World–And Other Tales for Global Times, Jeff Wasserstrom asked readers to guess which two people he had in mind to answerthis question: “If you could bring back to life, for a day, two people you’ve written about who are now dead, and ask them questions about what Shanghai was like then, who would they be and what would you ask them?” The clues were:
1) Both people were cosmopolitan women who spent time in both China and the United …

Fremont Site Distribution In The Upper Escalante River Drainage, Deborah C. Harris
Fremont Site Distribution In The Upper Escalante River Drainage, Deborah C. Harris
Theses and Dissertations
A Fremont site distribution model for the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument during the period A.D. 500—1050/1100 posits that the Fremont subsistence strategy (seasonal mobility with dependence on both agriculture and hunting/foraging) is reflected by a site pattern of low-investment, seasonal or short-term habitation sites and isolated storage facilities at "lowland" elevations, and high-investment, long-term residence sites at "upland" elevations (McFadden 1998, 2000). This research assesses the model to evaluate its general precision, looking particularly at its success in modeling site locations for long-term residential versus seasonal/short-term habitation sites. A database including more than 400 Fremont sites was created to evaluate …

Spiritual Coping In Children Diagnosed With Cancer, Jory L. Smith
Spiritual Coping In Children Diagnosed With Cancer, Jory L. Smith
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Children coping with chronic illnesses employ a variety of strategies to help them defend against their illness-related stressors. In a study of children diagnosed with asthma, Ezop (2002), using the Children’s Religious Coping Scale (CRC), found that the use of positive religious coping techniques led to a better adaptation to life and a more positive perspective on illnesses. The Ezop study also found that children and adolescents used positive religious coping moderately and made only limited use of negative religious coping. The present study analyzed the positive and negative coping skills of adolescents diagnosed with cancer. Specifically, in a prior …

Library Scholarship
The Champlain College Library asked students from our Electronic Game Design Program and the Emergent Media Center to create a game to complement our Information Literacy (IL) program. Little did we know that this collaboration would lead us to question and re-envision what we mean by information literacy. Through the library-student collaboration, it became clear to the Library that words like authority, credibility, reliability, and currency were being used superficially. Clearly, our information literacy efforts needed to focus more on which factors were needed rather than prescribed. In a more abstract environment, like a game, the focus shifts from filling …
Hammering Square Pegs Into Round Holes: International Development And The Flawed Ontological Assumptions Of Modernity, Justin Micah Pack
Hammering Square Pegs Into Round Holes: International Development And The Flawed Ontological Assumptions Of Modernity, Justin Micah Pack
Theses and Dissertations
Despite the increase in awareness of the plight of the third world and NGOs attempting to deal with poverty, international development projects continue to be alarmingly hit and miss. The problematic effectiveness of international development has led to an intense theoretical debate seeking to examine what exactly leads some projects awry. These criticisms often focus on the fundamental assumptions that underlie international development projects and occasionally relate them to the epistemological and ontological assumptions of modernity. In this thesis, I use Heidegger and Nietzsche to deepen the criticism of the epistemological and ontological assumptions of modernity that in turn support …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Challenges and opportunities presented by the HEC National Digital Library programme (NDLP) are presented. The case of the University of the Punjab represents the major challenges faced by LIS professionals in the use and awareness of this programme. The study is based on the interviews with library professionals working in the Punjab University Library, relevant issues as described in local literature, and researchers' observations and experiences. A diagnostic-cum-prescriptive approach is used in discussing and making conclusions.

Workforce Issues In Health Care Reform: Assessing The Present And Preparing For The Future, Fitzhugh Mullan
Health Policy and Management Congressional Testimonies
Summary of Testimony Fitzhugh Mullan, M.D. Before the Senate Finance Committee March 12, 2009
- Health Care Reform will require modifications in the structure of the U.S. physician workforce the foremost of which is the construction of a strong primary care delivery base.
- There are over 800,000 practicing physicians today or 280 physicians per 100,000 people. This represents a greater physician density than Canada (210) and the United Kingdom (250) but a density less than France (340) and Germany (350).
- The distribution of physicians in the U.S. heavily favors urban areas. Metropolitan areas have 2-5 times as many physicians as non-metropolitan …

Can China Go High-Tech When Exports Slump?, Yu Zhou
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
As the financial Tsunami batter China’s exporting hubs, everyone is wondering how well China can weather the storm in the next couple of years, but a more important question is how China’s economy will emerge after the crisis. As a result of extensive research, I argue that there have been sustained forces pushing China’s industry to more innovative fields with a stronger orientation to the domestic market. The crisis will only strengthen the shift in a more dramatic manner.
This conclusion is based on my research in Beijing’s Zhongguancun, a region dedicated to innovative industry and domestic market. I started …

Patrons Cataloging? The Role And Quality Of Patron Tagging In Item Description, William Lund, Allyson Washburn
Faculty Publications
With the advent of Web 2.0 technologies, user participation in the description and evaluation of content has come to the library. User tagging is almost a given in applications such as Del.icio.us, Flickr, and LibraryThing. The question is whether tagging provided by users with their own motivations is better in some sense then descriptions provided by professionals. Is the tagging provided by the wisdom of the crowd a better description of an item?
