Large majorities of college seniors do not feel that they have made substantial progress in: ...learning what they need to know to become active and informed citizens…

Overall, despite their vastly increased resources, more powerful technology, and hundreds of new courses, colleges cannot be confident that students are learning more than they did fifty years ago…

International Policies And The Social Work Response: The Example Of Nafta, Lindsay Adamski Mar 2009

International Policies And The Social Work Response: The Example Of Nafta, Lindsay Adamski

Social Work Theses

The policies made in the United States can have an important impact on the rest of the world and policy makers must consider the effect of U.S. policies not only on the citizens of the United States, but the global community as well. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is an example of a policy of the United States that has changed the economy of Mexico, and in many ways made Mexico more dependent on the United States. This paper looks at the effect NAFTA has had on the economies, jobs, and workers of both Mexico and the United …

Pestilence In Paradise: Leprosy Accounts In The Annual Reports Of The Governor Of The Territory Of Hawaii, Charles D. Bernholz Mar 2009

Pestilence In Paradise: Leprosy Accounts In The Annual Reports Of The Governor Of The Territory Of Hawaii, Charles D. Bernholz

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

An examination of the history of leprosy, or Hansen’s disease, in the Territory of Hawaii is a clear window upon how the federal government addressed its fundamental responsibilities to an indigenous people of this nation. Over the years, and in particular prior to 1934, various federal agencies oversaw the array of this nation’s territories, but the Department of the Interior was always accountable for those of Alaska and Hawaii. Each agency acquired annual reports from the assigned administrators of such areas. These federal documents offer a remarkable perspective of these diverse geographic locations, and contain data on aspects of local …

Rss: The Hov Lane On The Information Highway, James M. Donovan

Presentations

Today’s world suffers from no lack of readily available information. The challenge is rarely the finding of information; it is rather laying your hands on just the right piece at just the right time. While attorneys have a duty to be well-informed about the state of the law, remaining current can be difficult. The goal should be to have information delivered and organized in a timely, convenient way that both maximizes exposure—assuring that you aren’t missing that perfect nugget that will give you the competitive edge—yet minimizes time-investment in retrieval and scanning through items that may be of no use …

Just The Facts, Ma’Am: Make The Web Your Investigative Partner, Anne Burnett Mar 2009

Just The Facts, Ma’Am: Make The Web Your Investigative Partner, Anne Burnett

Presentations

The web is a handy investigative tool, allowing a researcher to obtain information about persons, property and things. One can find email addresses, home addresses, telephone numbers, criminal records, military service information, property records, vital statistics information, photographs and more. This information may help locate a missing heir, reveal useful information about a potential expert witness, confirm the legitimacy of a business, determine who owns a piece of property or expose the litigious nature of a potential client. The focus in these program materials is on free resources, but I also cover a few fee-based services that can be accessed …

Measure Twice And Cut Once: A Review Of Clark And Creswell’S Mixed Methods Reader, Steven R. Terrell

The Qualitative Report

The Mixed Methods Reader is an edited book that presents the reader with a synthesized introduction to the philosophy, history, methodology and practice of mixed methods research. The first section presents the reader with a series of 14 foundational articles, with a second section presenting nine carefully chosen exemplar articles demonstrating best practices in the field. The editors did a remarkable job in combining theory and application with the inclusion of a framework throughout the text which includes discussion questions, visual diagrams and introductory comments for each article. This creates a synthesis and ease of use that guarantees this text …

Five Quirky Blogs To Check Out Mar 2009

Five Quirky Blogs To Check Out

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

A few blogs we’ve stumbled across in recent weeks that, depending on your interests, may merit your further attention:

1. “China Book Reviews” runs (as you might expect) reviews of an unusual selection of China books, including a few we’ve mentioned or reviewed ourselves, like Jeff Wasserstrom’s Brave New World and Mobo Gao’s The Battle for China’s Past (which Kate Merkel-Hess reviewed for TLS last spring).

2. Anna Greenspan wrote a piece for China in 2008 about the tainted milk scandal in China last fall. Now she is keeping her own blog about her experiment with placing her three-year old …

The Electrophysiological Manifestation Of Dutch Verb Second Violations, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Roelien Bastiaanse Mar 2009

The Electrophysiological Manifestation Of Dutch Verb Second Violations, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Roelien Bastiaanse

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research

We investigated the processing of violations of the verb position in Dutch, in a group of healthy subjects, by measuring event-related potentials (ERPs) through electroencephalography (EEG). In Dutch, the base position of the verb is clause final, but in matrix clauses, the finite verb is in second position, a construction known as Verb Second. In embedded clauses, the finite verb remains in its clause-final base position. The results show that ungrammatical placement of finite verbs in second position in embedded clauses yields a P600 response, which suggests that the parser treats this type of violation as a clear syntactic …

Living The Game: Wow-China

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Last fall, we ran an interview with UCI Professor of Informatics Bonnie Nardi, who was conducting research on the different ways World of Warcraft (an MMO-RPG, Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game) was used in China and the US.

Recently, a reader drew our attention to interesting images where Chinese players envisioned themselves in the game (often quite playfully). In honor of Chinese New Year (a game players celebrate in-game as “Lunar Festival”), WoW-China invited players to submit photos of themselves “blending their Lunar New Year celebration with their enthusiasm for World of Warcraft.” The contest received more than eight thousand …

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Jeff Wasserstrom (3/28/09, 7:41 a.m.):

This is, of course, the first AAS meeting at which a book associated with the China Beat has been displayed. And nicely displayed it definitely is, as the accompanying photo illustrates (and note that it is shown in the company of books like Voices Carry, China Ink and The Subject of Gender, which have been discussed on our site before). More than that, though, this is also a conference that, overall, has some features that run in tandem with some of the goals of China Beat. For example, just as we’ve tried to encourage more …
