La Crisis Financiera De 1982-1983 En Chile: Orígenes, Intervención, Efectos Y Implicancias Para El Modelo Neoliberal, Luke Shoemaker
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This project is an analysis of the financial crisis in Chile between 1982 and 1983. I will begin with a summary of the crisis with respect to three variables: the origin of the crisis, the government’s intervention to confront the crisis, and the effects of the crisis. Afterwards I will discuss the implications that the financial crisis has for the neoliberal model. There are two hypotheses for this discussion. One hypothesis is that the neoliberal model caused the crisis. The alternative hypothesis is that the crisis was caused by errors in the application of the neoliberal model and other external …
Las Secuelas Psicológicas Y Las Necesidades En Salud Mental Para Las Víctimas De La Dictadura: Una Mirada Crítica A Los Servicios De Prais, Kate Hails
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Although the violent and repressive military dictatorship in Chile led by Augosto Pinochet officially ended in 1990, the psychological repercussions for the direct victims of human rights violations and their family members remain. PRAIS (the Program of Reparations and Comprehensive Healthcare), was created as a government response to the physical and mental health consequences of the human rights violations committed by the state. PRAIS beneficiaries include former political prisoners and their families, the families of those who were detained-disappeared or executed, people fired from their jobs for political reasons, and other victims of human rights violations committed during the dictatorship …

Un Juego De Identidad Y Percepción: Un Estudio De Caso De “Visuales,” Una Tribu Urbana En Viña Del Mar, Chile, Anya Bergman
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This paper is a case study of an urban tribe in Chile called “Visual,” and specifically members of the tribe who live and/or attend events in Viña del Mar. Urban tribes have different connotations for different people, but for Visuales, the term signifies adherence, in whatever capacity desired, to certain codes and styles and a bond with a small group of tribe members. This particular urban tribe adapted its style from Japan, where a similar movement gained popularity in the 1990s. The members, like those in Chile, did not have a particular ideology but focused on music and extravagant aesthetic …

Negotiating With Separatist Terrorists, Dottie Bond
Negotiating With Separatist Terrorists, Dottie Bond
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It is in the interest of this thesis to investigate why governments negotiate with separatist terrorists, and why those negotiations succeed or fail. The four cases analyzed in this thesis include: Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, (1983-2009); Russia and the Chechen Republic, (1994-2009); Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization, (1993-1994); and Great Britain and the Irish Republican Army, (1985-2009). In this study, four basic questions are addressed: When and why do governments agree to negotiate with separatist terrorists? Is negotiation a viable solution to ending historic ethnic conflicts? Are certain peace agreements and negotiation strategies more …

Gender Advertisements: Replication Of A Classic Work Examining Women’S Portrayal In Magazines And Family Photographs, Kristen Brekne
Gender Advertisements: Replication Of A Classic Work Examining Women’S Portrayal In Magazines And Family Photographs, Kristen Brekne
Honors Projects in Communication
In 1979, Erving Goffman, produced the classic work, Gender Advertisements, in response to the era of feminism. Goffman then arranged his findings “with malice” into seven categories in order to demonstrate to others the apparent infantalization and subordination of women he saw present in advertising. My study is a replication of Goffman’s research designed to see if thirty years of feminism and cultural enlightenment have changed the way women are displayed in magazine advertisements. My method is grounded in phenomenology and like Goffman’s original, foregoes a random sample of advertisements in favor of a deeper understanding of the phenomenon in …
Working The System: The Role Of Islam In Student Negotiations Of A Midwestern Charter School, Elizabeth J. Baer
Working The System: The Role Of Islam In Student Negotiations Of A Midwestern Charter School, Elizabeth J. Baer
Religious Studies Honors Projects
“What should the role of Islam be in American public life?” Rather than answer this question through broad, theoretical discourse, I turn to a case study of Somali Muslims in a Midwestern charter school. Through this case study, I analyze how individual Muslims, tied to communities and Allah in diverse ways, actively negotiate how to incorporate their religious practices into public space. I argue that by examining specific strategies used by individuals in an actual school setting, as opposed to making generalizing assumptions, one can better understand that Islam already plays a variety of constantly changing roles in American public …
The Impact Of The Summer Olympics On Its Host City: The Costs Outweigh The Tangible Benefits, Steven Rosenblum
The Impact Of The Summer Olympics On Its Host City: The Costs Outweigh The Tangible Benefits, Steven Rosenblum
Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences
In the eyes of a host city, the reason to host the Summer Olympic Games has evolved from shining glory on athletic feats to receiving the perceived benefits from the opportunity. In the current times, there are a record number of Olympic events generating a demand for the construction of a larger amount of Games facilities than ever before. However, nations still vie for the winning bid to host the Olympics in one of their cities. This paper seeks to show that the costs of hosting the Games outweigh its tangible benefits. In detail, it will look at the financial, …

What Determines Leadership Style?, Apryl Silva
Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences
This project examines selected traits valued in friends by educated individuals, and it seeks to determine if these valued traits vary by gender, race, and generational cohort. A literature review reveals that variations in leadership attributes are evident among these traits. In order to test the broad applicability of this literature, data were taken from the General Social Survey (GSS). The key analyses center on correlations between gender, race, and cohort, on the one hand, and the selected valued traits identified with effective leadership on the other. In some cases, the literature yields weak hypotheses, and in other cases the …

Anthropological Study Of Shain Library: Uses, Perceptions, And Recommendations, Ingrid Brudvig, Casey Corn, Reed Harris, Brendan Kempf, Sophie Marx, Nick Mercer, Lauren Moran, Erich Roberts
Anthropology Department Student Projects
In the spring of 2009 professor Benoit’s Applied Anthropology class conducted a comprehensive study on Connecticut College’s Shain Library. The class met with the library staff multiple times before deciding how to tackle the project. The research question posed was, how do students use and perceive the library? Does the library satisfy student’s needs, and if not what changes could be implemented to better the student body?
The class began by submitting a proposal of our project to the Institutional Review Board, and then proceeded with the investigation. Though the topic as a whole is an examination of Shain Library …

The Potential Use Of Mobile Communication In The Classroom, Daniel Calkins
Honors Projects in Communication
The emergence of technology into higher education has drastically altered the nature and quality of learning experiences. Over the past twenty years, the advancement of technology and the evolvement of computer hardware and software have shifted the needs and expectations of students and faculty in performing their educational duties. Recently, demands among higher educational communities have centered on the need for increased mobility with regards to technology. In the fall of 2008, a number of schools, namely the University of Maryland, Freed-Hardeman University, and Abilene Christian University, issued mobile hand-held devices to a group of incoming students in an effort …
Macroeconomic Determinants Of Worker Remittances To Latin American And The Caribbean Countries, Sathiavanee Veeramoothoo
Macroeconomic Determinants Of Worker Remittances To Latin American And The Caribbean Countries, Sathiavanee Veeramoothoo
Honors Projects in Economics
A regression analysis was performed to identify which macroeconomic factors influence the magnitude to worker remittances to over thirty Latin American and Caribbean countries. Age dependency ratio, land area, net migration, labor force, population and unemployment were found to be significant predictors of remittances. A time series exponential model was developed to forecast the level of remittances for the next ten years. The results suggest that remittances to Latin American and Caribbean countries will reach USD 190,810 million in 2018.
Based on the above findings, this paper will help scholars understand better what drives worker remittances in Latin American and …

Honors Projects in Economics
This research intends to determine the costs and benefits of the transition from Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in the United States. This study targets the costs and benefits of the transition in three areas of accounting: Academia, Corporate and Public. The transition could potentially have large implications on investment in the US and around the world, and therefore, this study aims to see if it is beneficial for the US to adopt IFRS. To ascertain the costs and benefits of the transition, this research used an online survey to obtain knowledge and opinions …

Children At Risk In The Child Welfare System: Collaborations To Promote School Readiness - Final Report, Helen Ward Jd, Julie Atkins Ma, Patricia Morris, Sun Young Yoon
Children, Youth, & Families
This study examines the degree to which key players in the child welfare, early intervention/preschool special education (EI/Preschool SPED) and early care and education (ECE) systems (e.g. Head Start, preschool, child care centers, family child care homes) collaborate to meet the developmental needs of children ages 0 to 5 who are involved in the child welfare system. This research includes an analysis of data from the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Wellbeing (NSCAW) as well as a case study in Colorado involving interviews with key stakeholders and statewide surveys of caseworkers and foster parents.
Wild Justice - Honor And Fairness Among Beasts At Play, Marc Bekoff, Jessica Pierce
Wild Justice - Honor And Fairness Among Beasts At Play, Marc Bekoff, Jessica Pierce
Social Cognition Collection
This essay challenges science’s traditional taboo against anthropomorphizing animals or considering their behavior as indicative of feelings similar to human emotions. In their new book Wild Justice: The Moral Lives of Animals, the authors argue that anthropomorphism is alive and well, as it should be. Here they describe some activities of animals, particularly animals at play, as clear signs that they have recognizable emotions and moral intelligence. Based on years of behavioral and cognitive research, the authors discuss in their book that animals exhibit a broad repertoire of moral behaviors, including empathy and cooperation, but here they concentrate on the …

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection
Identifying lame cows and quantifying the prevalence of lameness are important elements of cattle welfare assessment that are generally achieved by methods involving observations of each animal walking. There is no published method for assessing lameness in cows confined in tie-stalls. The objective of this study (carried out within the European Commission’s Welfare Quality® project) was to develop a suitable method and validate it for lameness detection against a published locomotion score. A series of indicators of lameness visible in tied cows was formalized into a stall assessment protocol. This was validated against a traditional locomotion score and tested for …

Internal Medicine
By several measures, health care spending continues to rise, forcing businesses and families to cut back on operations and household expenses. In 2008, health care spending in the United States reached $2.4 trillion dollars, and is projected to reach $3.1 trillion in 2012.During the past decades, there has been a steady increase in the utilization of expensive inpatient imaging studies, with an overall increase in health care costs. In particular, advanced imaging includes CT, MRI and Nuclear Medicine, used for the diagnosis and management of hospitalized patients. The reasons for unnecessary imaging examinations include indirect financial benefit to physicians, medico-legal …

Insincere Utterances And Gaze: Eye Contact During Sarcastic Statements, Jason A. Williams, Erin L. Burns, Elizabeth A. Harmon
Psychology and Child Development
Anecdotal evidence suggests that speakers often gaze away from their listeners during sarcastic utterances; however, this question has not been directly addressed empirically. This study systematically compared gaze-direction of speakers in dyadic conversation when uttering sincere and sarcastic statements. 18 naive participants were required to recite a series of contradictory statements on a single topic to a naive listener, while at the same time conveying their actual opinion about this topic. This latter task could only be accomplished through prosodic or nonverbal communication by indicating sincerity or insincerity (sarcasm) for the various statements and allowed examination of gaze across the …

Maternal Depression: A Global Threat To Children’S Health, Development, And Behavior And To Human Rights, Theodore D. Wachs, Maureen M. Black, Patrice L. Engle
Psychology and Child Development
Depressive disorders are a common source of disability among women. In addition to the economic and human costs of maternal depression, children of depressed mothers are at risk for health, developmental, and behavioral problems. Although most of the research examining the evidence and intergenerational aspects of maternal depression has been conducted in high-income countries, recent evidence suggests that rates of maternal depression may be higher in low- and middle-income countries, where nearly 90% of the world’s children live. This review examines the evidence from low- and middle-income countries that links maternal depression with children’s health, development, and behavior. We present …
