Quilting As A Mode Of Self-Expression Among Irish Women, Emer Fahy Apr 2009

Quilting As A Mode Of Self-Expression Among Irish Women, Emer Fahy

4th Biennial Symposium of the International Quilt Museum: Proceedings

This paper arises from the research work of my M.A. in Women’s Studies at UCC in 2005, which addresses the motivations for women’s involvement in quilting. This work is supported by a scholarship from the Irish Council for Research in the Humanities and Social Sciences. In this paper I will focus on the importance of disidentification for women accessing quilting as a form of artistic self-expression.

My research shows that for many women, it is the cultural invisibility of quilts and quilting, supported by the myths of frugality and functionality surrounding them, that enables women to comfortably access this medium …

The Dalai Lama And The Nobel Prize: Correcting A Misunderstanding, A. Tom Grunfeld Apr 2009

The Dalai Lama And The Nobel Prize: Correcting A Misunderstanding, A. Tom Grunfeld

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

As many readers of this blog doubtless realize, everything having to do with Tibet is subject to mythologizing. That the Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts on behalf of Tibetan independence is one of these myths. This notion gets mentioned in the Western press routinely, and it sometimes even shows up in comments by academic specialists. In fact, the prize was awarded to him more because of the events in Tiananmen Square that had happened just a few months before the award than for anything related to the Tibet struggle per se.

Indeed, it appears …

'Conflict Analysis:' Exploring The Role Of Kuwait In Mediation In The Middle East, Abdullah R. Al Saleh

Dissertations and Theses

The Middle East is a large geographical area, and while people think of it as a homogeneous area in terms of language and culture, the region IS actually more of a melting pot of ethnic, religious, racial and linguistic groups. Understanding the distinctions between these groups is of paramount importance to understanding the region. Historical rivalries between some groups, for example, Sunni and Shia Muslims, go back hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years. Yet, people continue with life. How do countries continue to deal with each other when there are open, unsettled questions, such as boundaries or control of islands? Is …

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

Dear Friends: We all have guilty pleasures, and one of mine is the end-of-year top ten list. I love the condensing of the past twelve months in digestible morsels of best, worst, most important, most outrageous; it's as though I can live the year about to expire all over again from the comfort of my own home and in record time. This past year, though, resists easy summing-up.

Hope For Queen City: Immigration And Neighborhood Development In The West Side Of Buffalo, Maggie Best

African & African American Studies Senior Theses

In the upstate region of New York State once stood a proud and prosperous city on the edge of Lake Erie. Since its first golden age, Buffalo has experienced, time and time again, setbacks and failures that are often nationally noted, only adding to the city's image as a Rust Belt dump.

Identity: Theory And Clinical Implications, Kolina J. Delgado Apr 2009

Identity: Theory And Clinical Implications, Kolina J. Delgado

Psychology Student Publications

The term identity refers to how one defines the self. As can probably be inferred based on the previous statement, the concept of identity formation is complex. Scholars from several schools of thought have hypothesized about identity for centuries, yet the concept of identity development remains an elusive one to say the least. The lack of consensus regarding what the term 'identity' encompasses has made research endeavors rather difficult. Nevertheless, there is an extensive literature base on identity and selfhood, making it all but impossible to provide an exhaustive review within the confines of one paper. Therefore, the current paper …

Social Psychology In Action: A Critical Analysis Of Alive, Kolina J. Delgado Apr 2009

Social Psychology In Action: A Critical Analysis Of Alive, Kolina J. Delgado

Psychology Student Publications

Frank Marshall's 1993 film Alive captures several key theories of social psychology. The film depicts a true story of a Uruguayan rugby team, who together with friends and family were crossing the Andes Mountains to play a game with neighboring Chile when their plane crashed, leaving them stranded. Twenty-nine people survived the plane crash but only sixteen survived a treacherous seventy days atop the mountain before they were rescued. During their time in the snow covered Andes Mountains the group had to make difficult decisions in order to survive. This paper seeks to provide a thorough analysis of a several …

Personality And Cardiovascular Disease: Implications For Assessment, Kolina J. Delgado

Psychology Student Publications

The term cardiovascular disease refers to several diseases of the cardiovascular system such as coronary heart disease (CHD), coronary artery disease, high blood pressure (HBP), and stroke. According to the American Heart Association (AHA, 2009), CVD has been responsible for more American deaths each year than any other cause of death since the year 1900. The most recent data suggests that 2400 Americans die of CVD per day, averaging to one death every 37 seconds. Furthermore, the AHA reports that 1 in 3 Americans are currently living with one or more forms of CVD. There has been vast research into …

Preemption By Stealth, Sandi Zellmer Apr 2009

Preemption By Stealth, Sandi Zellmer

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

One can hardly dispute that preemption issues are complex and highly nuanced, involving both federalism and separation of powers---congressional prerogatives, agency competence, and judicial deference--as well as efficiency, equity, victim compensation, and cost-shifting objectives. By focusing specifically on cases involving statutory savings clauses, this Article makes a modest attempt to identify preemption patterns and principles from a discrete set of opinions issued by the Rehnquist and Roberts Courts through 2008. It undertakes a comparative analysis of case law in four areas: (1) the environment; (2) labor and employment; (3) products liability; and (4) agricultural practices. These four were chosen both …

Political Affiliation And Perceptions Of Trade: Examining Survey Data From The State Of Georgia, Roger White, Richard Clark Apr 2009

Political Affiliation And Perceptions Of Trade: Examining Survey Data From The State Of Georgia, Roger White, Richard Clark

Economics

We examine the influences of political party affiliation and self-identification as politically conservative, centrist, or liberal on individuals’ trade preferences. Majority support for trade is reported for all political classifications, with Republicans found to be 13.7%–15.1% more likely than Democrats and independents to support trade. Similarly, conservatives are 14.8%–21% more likely to support trade than are centrists and liberals; however, distinctions exist between ‘‘very conservative’’ and ‘‘somewhat conservative’’ cohorts.

East-West Migration And The Immigrant-Trade Link: Evidence From Italy, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse Apr 2009

East-West Migration And The Immigrant-Trade Link: Evidence From Italy, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse

Economics

Employing data for Italy and 68 trade partners that span the period 1996 2001, we examine the role of immigrants in influencing Italian exports to and imports from their respective home countries. Particular emphasis is placed on variation in the immigrant-trade relationship across Former Soviet Republic (FSR) and Post-Communist (PCOM) country classifications relative to immigrants from non-FSR and non-PCOM countries. The findings provide information that may assist in policy formulation and lead to more enlightened public and political debates of the issue. Immigrants are generally found to exert pro-trade influences, with proportional immigrant effects being somewhat …

Digital Curation Vignettes: Personal, Academic, And Organizational Digital Information, Joan E. Beaudoin, Maria Esteva, Andrea Japzon

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

This panel presents variations on the theme of digital curation by examining the digital information management and preservation practices of three different populations. Personal digital information management, personal collections transferred to institutional repositories, and a digital archiving case in a private organization, offer a wide view of the types of contexts in which digital material is being produced “in the wild.” Across the cases we found that digital record-keeping and preservation practices are not well understood or established, and that a vast amount of digital content created currently is at risk. Other issues, such as an individual’s perception of digital …
