A Study Of The Relationship Between The Principles Of Distributive Justice And Political Ideology, Maryalice Multari
A Study Of The Relationship Between The Principles Of Distributive Justice And Political Ideology, Maryalice Multari
Social Work Theses
Ideology plays a very important role in everyday life, particularly in a President’s term of office. Under the Presidency of George W. Bush, welfare and other Social Services were severely cut due to the fact that he believed in more conservative viewpoints (higher military spending, higher tax cuts for the wealthy, etc.). However, ideologies are not only seen on a grand scale: everyone makes day-to-day decisions based on his/her own beliefs. This study hypothesized that males within the Providence College student body would believe in more conservative ideologies, whereas females would believe in more liberal ones. Statements based on both …
Jurors’ Perceptions Of Juvenile Defendants: The Influence Of Intellectual Disability, Abuse History, And Confession Evidence, Cynthia J. Najdowski, Bette L. Bottoms, Maria C. Vargas
Jurors’ Perceptions Of Juvenile Defendants: The Influence Of Intellectual Disability, Abuse History, And Confession Evidence, Cynthia J. Najdowski, Bette L. Bottoms, Maria C. Vargas
Psychology Faculty Scholarship
Understanding jurors’ perceptions of juvenile defendants has become increasingly important as more and more juvenile cases are being tried in adult criminal court rather than family or juvenile court. Intellectual disability and child maltreatment are overrepresented among juvenile delinquents, and juveniles (particularly disabled juveniles) are at heightened risk for falsely confessing to crimes. In two mock trial experiments, we examined the effects of disability, abuse history, and confession evidence on jurors’ perceptions of a juvenile defendant across several different crime scenarios. Abused juveniles were treated more leniently than nonabused juveniles only when the juvenile’s crime was motivated by self-defense against …

The Library ILS brings information from the World to the Campus and from the Campus to the World
Today’s Challenge
• Different local databases function as separate Intelligence Agencies that do not talk to one another
• Need to integrate the searching of the individual, unique databases
• Need interfiled records for local databases with traditional catalog entries
• Move beyond just linking to databases
Think “Harvesting” • Need to move from silos to organic markets that bring everything together without creating duplicate work
• Goal: a single search engine that brings together the catalog with the unique digital collections …
Screams, Vampires, Werewolves, And Autographs: An Exploration Of The Twilight Phenomenon, Emily Reynolds
Screams, Vampires, Werewolves, And Autographs: An Exploration Of The Twilight Phenomenon, Emily Reynolds
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the pop culture phenomenon of Twilight. Using a qualitative method of grounded theory, meanings and constructs were developed from the data. Data was gathered at three events centered around the release of the Twilight the film adaptation, and the release of the fourth and final book in the Twilight saga. A survey was administered to willing participants. After the surveys were gathered they were read and then coded. After the coding process a follow up interview was conducted with ten nominated and willing Twilight fans. The results had theoretical roots in …

A Bioeconomic Approach To Marriage And The Sexual Division Of Labor, Michael Gurven, Jeffrey Winking, Hillard Kaplan, Christopher Von Rueden, Lisa Mcallister

Children may be viewed as public goods whereby both parents receive equal genetic benefits yet one parent often invests more heavily than the other. We introduce a microeconomic framework for understanding household investment decisions to address questions concerning conflicts of interest over types and amount of work effort among married men and women. Although gains and costs of marriage may not be spread equally among marriage partners, marriage is still a favorable, efficient outcome under a wide range of conditions. This bioeconomic framework subsumes both cooperative and conflictive views on the sexual division of labor. We test hypotheses concerning marriage markets, …

It’S Just History: Patriotic Education In The Prc, Julia Lovell
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
It’s now a year since Chinese nationalism had its last big public outing. On April 19, 2008, twelve days after pro-Tibet protesters in Paris tried to grab the Olympic flame from a wheelchair-bound Chinese paralympian, patriotic civilians began mobilising protests around the French embassy in Beijing, and outside Carrefours in at least four different Chinese cities. “Protect Our Tibet! Bless Our Olympics! Boycott Carrefour!” declared banners at demonstrations on the northeast coast. “Say No to French Imperialists!”
As popular outrage grew about perceived anti-Chinese bias in Western reporting on the riots in Tibet and opposition to the torch relay, more …

The Internal And External Affects Of A Governor's State Budget Cuts On The Department Of Child Welfare, Tara Albury
The Internal And External Affects Of A Governor's State Budget Cuts On The Department Of Child Welfare, Tara Albury
Social Work Theses
State budget cuts reduce the resources available to the Department of Child Welfare. The Child Welfare Unit has had an increase in caseloads and a decrease in workers, resulting in an increase in caseloads for the remaining workers. In January 2009, the Department of Child Welfare made a transition with a community wide initiative to a more family directed all inclusive, team approach to service provision. The State was divided into four Initiative Regions, with a lead agency in each. This research examines areas of success, changes in staff responsibilities, changes in clients’ participation in services and barriers to the …

Barriers To Mitigation: A Pilot Study, James Lee, Crystal Paul, Guna Selvaduray
Faculty Publications
This pilot research was undertaken to discover barriers that prevent homeowners from mitigating earthquake hazards in their homes. There is a relatively significant body of literature on disaster mitigation, which is reviewed and summarized in this report. However, no studies address how these barriers may be overcome so that homeowners would be more proactive in mitigation. If the barriers can be identified, then future communications and policy actions that address these barriers can be taken, resulting in more widespread mitigation implementation that reduces the injury and damage potential that communities face, leading to a reduction in the post-disaster response requirement, …

The Anchor, Volume 122.22: April 22, 2009, Hope College
The Anchor: 2009
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Examining The Experiences Of Puerto Rico's Community Health Centers Under The Government Health Insurance Plan, A. Seiji Hayashi, Brad Finnegan, Peter Shin, Emily Jones, Sara J. Rosenbaum
Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative
This research brief examines the experiences of Puerto Rico's community health centers under the Commonwealth’s 1994 Government Health Insurance Plan (GHIP) – the Commonwealth's Medicaid program – also known as the Reforma. Of particular interest are the effects of Medicaid under-financing coupled with health centers' continuing obligations to furnish subsidized care for uninsured patients. To finance GHIP, the Commonwealth substantially curtailed its involvement with the direct provision of health care in both community and inpatient settings, transforming the former system of direct care provision into health insurance premium subsidies.
In 2007, the 47 operating sites of Puerto Rico's 19 federally …

Developing A Teachers' Handbook For Content-Based Instruction At Brigham Young University's English Language Center, Melinda Clement Hardman
Developing A Teachers' Handbook For Content-Based Instruction At Brigham Young University's English Language Center, Melinda Clement Hardman
Theses and Dissertations
In Winter semester of 2005 the English Language Center (ELC) began plans to implement a content-based program for students at its highest proficiency level in order to provide them with more effective preparation for academic studies in English. Since that time, the program has undergone various changes to provide a more stable, cohesive, and responsive curriculum. There is a need, however, for greater teacher support and training. This paper outlines the process I underwent to create a handbook that would provide needed guidance and training for teachers in this program. This project involved an in-depth needs analysis of teachers and …

Distribution, Function, And Value Of Parowan Valley Projectile Points, Aaron R. Woods
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis primarily addresses the quantities and distributions of Fremont projectile points in the Parowan Valley. First, I review previous research performed in Parowan Valley and outline currently accepted projectile point analysis and typology methods. I also review ethnographic data surrounding the function and value of projectile points. Then, I provide the results of an analysis of all projectile points in the Parowan Valley Archaeological Project collection. I note the large amount of projectile points in this collection and compare it to projectile point counts from other large Fremont sites.I also note chronological patterns in Parowan Valley using projectile points …
Perceptions Of Spirituality And Perceptions Of God Image: A Qualitative Study, Christopher Elson Peck
Perceptions Of Spirituality And Perceptions Of God Image: A Qualitative Study, Christopher Elson Peck
Theses and Dissertations
The vast majority of people living in the U.S. report that spirituality is an important part of their life. Ironically, the field of psychology has largely ignored the spiritual beliefs and experiences that so many people see as central to their well-being. Empirical study of spirituality, along with people's differing perceptions of their relationship to God, is a viable area of study for psychologists. This dissertation examines both spirituality and God image and the relationship between these two constructs using qualitative hermeneutic analysis. Findings showed a difficulty defining spirituality among other themes. Findings also showed that individuals' experiences with God …

Nrd Plans For “Not-Quite” Fully-Appropriated Basins, J. David Aiken
Cornhusker Economics
On April 8, 2009, the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) determined that the Lower Platte River Basin was not yet fully-appropriated. On April 6, Nebraska Governor Heineman signed Legislative Bill (LB) 483, which established procedures to limit new irrigation development in areas like the Lower Platte Basin. Last week’s newsletter (April 15), discussed how LB483 requires the 14 affected natural resource districts (NRDs) to prepare plans to limit new high-capacity wells, in order to maintain the basin’s not fully-appropriated status. This week’s newsletter discusses how the LB483 NRDs might propose to limit new irrigation wells.

Paleoindian Lifeways Of Paleoarchaic Peoples: A Faunal Analysis Of Early Occupations At North Creek Shelter, Utah, Bradley A. Newbold
Theses and Dissertations
Recent archaeological research within the American west, especially the Great Basin (e.g., Graf and Schmitt 2007), has perpetuated the notion of decreased residential mobility accompanied by increased diet breadth of hunter-gatherer groups during the Early Holocene. The earliest occupations at North Creek Shelter (NCS), a multicomponent site in south-central Utah, date to this time, specifically the Paleoarchaic (~10,000-9000 BP) and Early Archaic (~9000-7500 BP) periods. The zooarchaeological data from these levels were analyzed to determine whether Paleoarchaic occupations on the Colorado Plateau possessed greater residential mobility and narrower diet breadth than those of the Early Archaic, as they do in …
