Aligned Rank Tests For Interactions In Split-Plot Designs: Distributional Assumptions And Stochastic Heterogeneity, T. Mark Beasley, Bruno D. Zumbo
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Three aligned rank methods for transforming data from multiple group repeated measures (split-plot) designs are reviewed. Univariate and multivariate statistics for testing the interaction in split-plot designs are elaborated. Computational examples are presented to provide a context for performing these ranking procedures and statistical tests. SAS/IML and SPSS syntax code to perform the procedures is included in the Appendix.
Financial Crisis Containment, Anna Gelpern
Financial Crisis Containment, Anna Gelpern
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
This Article maps financial crisis containment - extraordinary measures to stop the spread of financial distress - as a category of legal and policy choice. I make three claims.
First, containment is distinct from financial regulation, crisis prevention and resolution. Containment is brief; it targets the immediate term. It involves claims of emergency, rule-breaking, time inconsistency and moral hazard. In contrast, regulation, prevention and resolution seek to establish sound incentives for the long term. Second, containment decisions deviate from non-crisis norms in predictable ways, and are consistent across diverse countries and crises. Containment invariably entails three kinds of choices: choices …
Viewing The World Through Oprah's Eyes: A Framing Analysis Of The Spiritual Views Of Oprah Winfrey, Marianne Jeanette Crosby
Viewing The World Through Oprah's Eyes: A Framing Analysis Of The Spiritual Views Of Oprah Winfrey, Marianne Jeanette Crosby
Masters Theses
Oprah Winfrey is an American icon. She has a hand in almost every form of media: movies, television, books, Internet, and radio. In her rise to success, another place that she has infiltrated is the church. Because of her wide range of influence, her thoughts and teaching on spirituality have made their way into both the home and church. Over ten years ago, talk shows had a reputation for portraying mainly negative topics. To combat this stereotype, she made a push to encourage more positive topics of discussion on her show. Yet after receiving criticism for "preaching," she withdrew from …
Cultural Differences As A Moderator Of Perceptions Of Injustice And Workplace Deviance, Amber Schroeder
Cultural Differences As A Moderator Of Perceptions Of Injustice And Workplace Deviance, Amber Schroeder
All Theses
Previous research has suggested that organizational justice perceptions are negatively related to workplace deviance, but the impact of individual cultural orientations has rarely been considered. Thus, the current paper examined individualism and collectivism as moderators of the justice-deviance relationship. Results suggested that injustice was more likely to lead to deviant workplace behavior in individuals high on individualism or low on collectivism than in individuals on the opposite ends of these spectrums. Practical implications and study limitations are discussed.
Urban Academic Library Outreach To Secondary School Students And Teachers, M. Delores Carlito
Urban Academic Library Outreach To Secondary School Students And Teachers, M. Delores Carlito
Urban Library Journal
The Mervyn H. Sterne Library at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is located in an urban area and therefore receives traffic from the community, particularly area schools. We encourage visits from these schools in order to promote information literacy, higher education, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and we recognize the importance of the library in the development of responsible citizenship, education, and culture. Since we encourage students to develop research skills before they attend college, we collaborate with area secondary schools on projects, papers, and activities by providing research instruction and support both at the schools and …

Changing Conceptions And Uses Of Computer Technologies In The Everyday Literacy Practices Of Sixth And Seventh Graders, Jane M. Agee, Jeanette Altarriba
Changing Conceptions And Uses Of Computer Technologies In The Everyday Literacy Practices Of Sixth And Seventh Graders, Jane M. Agee, Jeanette Altarriba
Psychology Faculty Scholarship
This study focused on 189 sixth and seventh graders in two large suburban schools and their use of computer technologies as part of their everyday literacy practices. We were especially interested in the students' conceptions of computer technologies and how computer use varied across grade and reading levels. The study included a survey completed by all 189 students that provided an overview of students' uses of computer technologies and other literacy practices. Interviews with 24 students provided more detailed information on how sixth- and seventh-grade students at different reading levels used and conceptualized computer technologies in and out of school. …
Child Tax Credit Expansion Increases Number Of Families Eligible For A Refund, Marybeth J. Mattingly
Child Tax Credit Expansion Increases Number Of Families Eligible For A Refund, Marybeth J. Mattingly
Carsey Publications
The analysis shows that more than 500,000 rural families, or almost 9 percent of rural families, will become newly eligible for the Child Tax Credit under the expansion included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Within these families are an estimated 900,000 rural children. The proportion of urban families benefiting from the expanded Child Tax Credit is slightly lower than in rural areas, but only 5 percent of suburban families are newly eligible for the credit.

May Roundtable: Introduction
Human Rights & Human Welfare
An annotation of:
“Case Closed: A Prosecutor Without Borders” by Julie Flint and Alex de Waal. World Affairs. Spring 2009.
The International Criminal Court, Mark Gibney
The International Criminal Court, Mark Gibney
Human Rights & Human Welfare
I believe I speak for many when I say that the International Criminal Court (ICC) has not been anywhere near the institution that it was anticipated as being, and the latest manifestation of the ICC’s shortcomings is the humanitarian disaster that has ensued after the Court issued an arrest warrant against Sudanese President Bashir. Since no other UN action is anticipated, all that remains is to count the ever-growing number of Sudanese deaths that will result from what now appears to be a purely symbolic act that was all-too predictable.
Adjudication For The Adjudicators?, Rebecca Otis
Adjudication For The Adjudicators?, Rebecca Otis
Human Rights & Human Welfare
Coming from the perspective of one who roundly agrees with Kofi Annan that the creation of the International Criminal Court was “a gift of hope to future generations, and a giant step forward in the march towards universal human rights and the rule of law,” it is deeply troubling to read reports of corruption within the body of the UN. Julie Flint and Alex de Waal’s piece this month judiciously exposes yet another facet of questionable activities, namely at the heart of the ICC. Flint and de Waal’s piece quickly deepens into a long list of allegations against the personal …
Homicides Clearances An Analysis Of Arrest Versus Exceptional Outcomes, John P. Jarvis, Wendy C. Regoeczi
Homicides Clearances An Analysis Of Arrest Versus Exceptional Outcomes, John P. Jarvis, Wendy C. Regoeczi
Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications
A number of studies in the homicide clearance literature combine arrest and exceptional clearances into a single category. This study addresses the question of whether these divergent homicide case outcomes are influenced differently by various aspects of the case. Using National Incident-Based Reporting System data on homicides from 1996 to 2002, the authors analyze logistic regression models of cases cleared by arrest and exceptionally cleared. Our results show that although certain factors have similar influences on both arrest and exceptional clearances, victim gender, offender race, weapon use, victim/offender relationship, and circumstances have differing impacts on case outcomes. The …
The Role Of Academic Libraries In Mentored Undergraduate Research: A Model Of Engagement In The Academic Community, Anthony Stamatoplos
The Role Of Academic Libraries In Mentored Undergraduate Research: A Model Of Engagement In The Academic Community, Anthony Stamatoplos
USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications
Mentored undergraduate research is an emergent pedagogy in higher education. It differs fundamentally from course-related student research and is largely independent of the curriculum. Academic libraries should engage formally with the undergraduate research community. To do so, librarians will need to think and work beyond traditional models of library service, most notably in information literacy programs. The intent of this article is to raise awareness about opportunities for library involvement with undergraduate researchers and programs. Lessons from one university, including a formal partnership between a library and an undergraduate research center, suggest some general strategies that academic libraries might explore.
Character Assassination In The Court Of Public Opinion, Tyler Moselle
Character Assassination In The Court Of Public Opinion, Tyler Moselle
Human Rights & Human Welfare
Alex de Waal and Julie Flint employ character assassination on Luis Moreno Ocampo in their World Affairs article “Case Closed: A Prosecutor Without Borders.” Ironically, they are guilty of the same crime they accuse Ocampo of: being overly occupied with the court of public opinion. Or perhaps, that is the only court they as Sudan specialists, and Ocampo as the ICC’s first Prosecutor, have recourse to when attempting to right the wrongs of injustice.

Developing A Manual For A Middle School Social Action Club, Stephanie D. Marando
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
This project is an overview on the process that was taken to incorporate a social action club into a middle school. The project discusses the importance of social action to youth, how it can be incorporated into a middle school, and how to use creative thinking in the process. A draft manual was completed in order to give educators that are interested in beginning a club like this a starting point of where to begin, what should be accomplished, and how. This project is the completion of a journey, which was taken in order to find out more about how …

Impact Of Air Quality Regulations On Entrepreneurial Activity, Scott E. Lowe, Samia Islam
Impact Of Air Quality Regulations On Entrepreneurial Activity, Scott E. Lowe, Samia Islam
Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations
The objective of this paper is to examine the impact of NAAQS non-attainment status on the entrepreneurial activity in a metropolitan statistical area (MSA). Most of the existing research on the relationship between non-attainment and the financial robustness of areas focuses on the big polluters (e.g., plastics, organic chemicals, steel smelting and refining, etc.), and examines how many of the big polluters failed or relocated, measured by the change in the number of plants/businesses when an area moved from attainment to non-attainment. Our paper will use a 306 MSA panel data set over the 1989-2003 timeframe, to address the question …
Housing Market Effects Of Inclusionary Zoning, Antonio Bento, Scott E. Lowe, Gerrit-Jan Knaap, Arnab Chakraborty
Housing Market Effects Of Inclusionary Zoning, Antonio Bento, Scott E. Lowe, Gerrit-Jan Knaap, Arnab Chakraborty
Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article presents an empirical analysis of the effects of inclusionary zoning policies on housing prices and starts in California during the period from 1988 through 2005. The analysis compares cities with and without such policies and isolates the effects of inclusionary zoning programs by carefully controlling for spatial and temporal conditions, such as the neighborhood or school district within which the house is located and changing market conditions over time. The analysis found that inclusionary zoning policies had measurable effects on housing markets in jurisdictions that adopt them; specifically, the price of single-family houses increases and the size of …
Situation Awareness Via Abductive Reasoning For Semantic Sensor Data: A Preliminary Report, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Cory Andrew Henson, Amit P. Sheth
Situation Awareness Via Abductive Reasoning For Semantic Sensor Data: A Preliminary Report, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Cory Andrew Henson, Amit P. Sheth
Kno.e.sis Publications
Semantic sensor Web enhances raw sensor data with spatial, temporal, and thematic annotations to enable high-level reasoning. In this paper, we explore how abductive reasoning framework can benefit formalization and interpretation of sensor data to garner situation awareness. Specifically, we show how abductive logic programming techniques, in conjunction with symbolic knowledge rules, can be used to detect inconsistent sensor data and to generate human accessible description of the state of the world from consistent subset of the sensor data. We also show how trust/belief information can be incorporated into the interpreter to enhance reliability. For concreteness, we formalize weather domain …
The Effects Of Accountability On Leniency Reduction In Self Ratings, Brettney Smith
The Effects Of Accountability On Leniency Reduction In Self Ratings, Brettney Smith
All Theses
The purpose of the present study was to assess the effects of accountability on leniency reduction in self-ratings. It was hypothesized that participants in both the upward and illegitimate accountability condition would have lower levels of leniency in their self-ratings than participants in the no accountability condition. Accountability was operationalized as participants being told that they would have to justify their self-ratings of driving performance to either a professor who specializes in driving research (upward accountability) or to an education graduate student who maintains the driving simulator (illegitimate accountability) via an audiotape. The results showed that accountability had a significant …
The Consequences Of Kelo: A Financial Approach, Curry Hilton
The Consequences Of Kelo: A Financial Approach, Curry Hilton
All Theses
ABSTRACT
Municipal bonds corresponding to states that passed effective post-Kelo restrictions on eminent domain takings experienced an increase in yields. The high costs associated with property acquisitions in states with strong legislation deter economic development takings and contribute to the decreasing of municipal bond prices. The financial effect attributed to municipal bonds issued for the purpose of economic improvement completely exceeds the impact offered by industrial improvement and public improvement bonds. The Kelo decision itself reinforced the appropriateness of government takings for private gain. The outcome directly affected municipal bond yields, causing an increase in price because of the low …
Intersexed, Intertext: A Critique Of Limited Gender Identity In Herculine Barbin And Middlesex, Allison Andrew
Intersexed, Intertext: A Critique Of Limited Gender Identity In Herculine Barbin And Middlesex, Allison Andrew
All Theses
Relying on the work of poststructuralists Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, and Judith Halberstam for their findings on gender and sexuality, as well as the sociological study of intersexed individuals by Sharon Preves, this thesis will show the identity construction of the intersexed both before and after intervention by closely charting their plight as it is presented in Michel Foucault's Herculine Barbin (1980) and Jeffrey Eugenides's Middlesex (2003). These texts vary greatly in historical significance, genre, and audience, but nevertheless suggest the same argument regarding the construction of identity. Ultimately, it is the self whose definition is of the greatest importance. …

Intergenerational Leadership Communication In The Workplace, Gayle Ruddick
All Theses
For the first time in history there are four generations in the workforce: Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y. Generation Y, the emergent working generation, has a vastly different way of communicating, a different perspective on work, and a different set of needs and values than those who dominate the current workforce. When Traditionalists and Baby Boomers retire Generation Y will be placed into professional positions they may not be prepared for. With the current trend of young people frequently changing jobs and feeling unfulfilled by the work they do, Generation Y needs guidance, leadership, and mentoring in …
The Value Of Reputation In Online Auctions: Evidence From Ebay, Ahmed Eddhir
The Value Of Reputation In Online Auctions: Evidence From Ebay, Ahmed Eddhir
All Theses
Online auctions create reputation mechanisms to give users information about the reputation of their trading partners. This information helps the buyer to make an informed decision regarding his purchase: whether or not to make a purchase from a particular seller and the price the buyer is willing to pay. eBay is a leading internet auctioneers and in May 2008, it changed its feedback system. This paper examines the new feedback system and studies the impact of seller's reputation on auction's price. The empirical results show that buyers respond to the Positive Feedback ratings of sellers. However, the impact on the …
