Determinants Of Demand Pressure In Nigeria's Foreign Exchange Market: An Empirical Analysis, A. Englama,, H. T. Sanni, O.O. Duke, T.S. Ogunleye, F.U. Isma'il

Economic and Financial Review

This study investigates factors that influenced the demand pressure in the foreign exchange market prior to the recent reforms. We examined the theoretical issues and empirically measured the determinants of the demand pressure in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market. We adopted a simple ordinary least square (OLS) to estimate the impact of exogenous variable on the dependable variable. We found from the empirical results that brand pressure was prevalent during the past period. From the literature, demand pressure m s attributed to a number of factors which include, among others, the high incidence of currency substitution arising from speculative trading, liquidity …

Determinants Of Capital Flows In Nigeria And Challenges For Macroeconomic Stability, A. Englama, N. C. Oputa, G. K. Sanni, M. U. Yakub, O. Adesanya, Z. Sanni Jun 2009

Determinants Of Capital Flows In Nigeria And Challenges For Macroeconomic Stability, A. Englama, N. C. Oputa, G. K. Sanni, M. U. Yakub, O. Adesanya, Z. Sanni

Economic and Financial Review

Capital flows into developing countries in the 1960s through the 1980s were mainly in the form of overseas development assistant (ODS) to governments as well as private capital through domestic multinational bank. Nigeria, like unit developing countries, is characterized by a low' level of domestic savings and in order to attain a desirable level of investment that would guarantee sustainable development, the economy needs some foreign sayings to bridge the savings investment gap. These savings come in the form of 'new money’ or capital inflows which are expected to provide financial capital for economic activities. Foreign participation is directed associated …

Determination Of Interest Rate Saharan African Countries: A Analysis., A. O. Folawewo, E. A. Udeaja Jun 2009

Determination Of Interest Rate Saharan African Countries: A Analysis., A. O. Folawewo, E. A. Udeaja

Economic and Financial Review

A major indicator of banking sector efficiency is interest rate spreads (IRS), which have been found to be very high in African countries. This paper analysed the determinants of interest rate spreads in Sub-Saharan African (SSA) from a macro perspective, that is, using aggregate banking sector data, and focusing macroeconomic and market determinants. The study used ex-ante measure of spreads, that is, differences between interest rates on lending and deposit. Using annual data covering 33 countries, the result to obtained from the paper suggested that different market and macroeconomic policy variables played significant role in explaining variation in IRS in …

Effects Of Poverty On Risk Attitudes Of Farmers In Benue State Nigeria, G. C. Aye, O. Oji Jun 2009

Effects Of Poverty On Risk Attitudes Of Farmers In Benue State Nigeria, G. C. Aye, O. Oji

Economic and Financial Review

The Nigerian agriculture is characterised by low productivity low fam incomes and low levels of

technological adoption and we inefficient production technique. This poor state of Nigerian agriculture is related to farmers' attitude towards risk in the adoption of production techniques, as well as risk in the production and socioeconomic environment, this study therefore sought to specifically to: determine the extent of poverty among farmers in the area; assess the risk attitude of the farmers and determine the effect of poverty variables on risk attitude of farmers. A multi-stage random sampling technique was used for selection of respondent. Data were …

The Social History In Death Penalty Defense Advocacy, Jesse Cheng Jun 2009

The Social History In Death Penalty Defense Advocacy, Jesse Cheng

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

This article offers an epistemologically focused descriptive account of the “social history” in American death penalty defense advocacy. Under British scientific empiricism, sufficient investigation forms the basis for representations that aspire to be adequate to investigated realities. As defense advocates see it, however, the very idea of humanity resists the goal of epistemological finality that comes with empiricist adequation. I argue that the social history investigation instrumentalizes this aesthetic of investigation-then-representation, allowing advocates to affirm to themselves the humanity of their clients while sidestepping the goal of adequation.

A Paradox Of Inconsistent Parametric And Consistent Nonparametric Regression, Peter C.B. Phillips, Liangjun Su Jun 2009

A Paradox Of Inconsistent Parametric And Consistent Nonparametric Regression, Peter C.B. Phillips, Liangjun Su

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper explores a paradox discovered in recent work by Phillips and Su (2009). That paper gave an example in which nonparametric regression is consistent whereas parametric regression is inconsistent even when the true regression functional form is known and used in regression. This appears to be a paradox, as knowing the true functional form should not in general be detrimental in regression. In the present case, local regression methods turn out to have a distinct advantage because of endogeneity in the regressor. The paradox arises because additional correct information is not necessarily advantageous when information is incomplete. In the …

Nonparametric Structural Estimation Via Continuous Location Shifts In An Endogenous Regressor, Peter C.B. Phillips, Liangjun Su Jun 2009

Nonparametric Structural Estimation Via Continuous Location Shifts In An Endogenous Regressor, Peter C.B. Phillips, Liangjun Su

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Recent work by Wang and Phillips (2009b, c) has shown that ill posed inverse problems do not arise in nonstationary nonparametric regression and there is no need for nonparametric instrumental variable estimation. Instead, simple Nadaraya Watson nonparametric estimation of a (possibly nonlinear) cointegrating regression equation is consistent with a limiting (mixed) normal distribution irrespective of the endogeneity in the regressor, near integration as well as integration in the regressor, and serial dependence in the regression equation. The present paper shows that some closely related results apply in the case of structural nonparametric regression with independent data when there are continuous …

A Psychoeducational Group Intervention For Fibromyalgia Patients, Derek O. Bacchus Jun 2009

A Psychoeducational Group Intervention For Fibromyalgia Patients, Derek O. Bacchus

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study examined the effect of a multidisciplinary psychoeducational treatment group on Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) pain, depression, catastrophizing, and quality of life. The Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ), Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CSQ), and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment—Abbreviated Version were used to assess these constructs in 15 participants. The sample was composed entirely of female participants and was predominantly middle aged, which is typical of the FMS population. Two separate groups of FMS patients—seven in Group 1, eight in Group 2—completed a 10-week psychoeducational intervention where they were presented with …

Clergy Stress: Seventh-Day Adventist Pastors In Hong Kong, Singapore, And Taiwan, Onn Liang

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This research utilized an expanded ABC-X model of family stress, one that incorporated the culture and boundary ambiguity constructs of the contextual approach as a paradigm to examine the outcomes of job-related stress experienced by the Seventh-day Adventist pastors in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan. All together 89 Adventist pastors or 86.4% of the total pastoral workforce in the three regions participated in the 52 self-administered questionnaire survey. In addition, two focus groups made up of 15 pastors in Taiwan were utilized to generate descriptive data related to pastors and their families in the context of stressful situations. This research …

Attitudes And Beliefs That Predict Taiwanese Older Adults' Intentions To Attend Strength And Balance Training Programs, Shih-Fan Lin Jun 2009

Attitudes And Beliefs That Predict Taiwanese Older Adults' Intentions To Attend Strength And Balance Training Programs, Shih-Fan Lin

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The rate of participation in the strength and balance training (SBT) program, an effective fall prevention intervention, is very low among older adults. To increase older adults' participations in SBT programs, this study involved an observational and cross-sectional study design to understand factors that affect Taiwanese older adults' intention to attend SBT programs utilizing the theory of planned behavior. Questionnaires that measured constructs of the theory of planned behavior (attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and behavioral, normative, and control beliefs) were collected from 221 community-dwelling Taiwanese elderly women between the age of 55 and 94. Simple correlations and multiple …

The Effects Of A Psychoneuroimmunology Based Lifestyle Intervention In Modifying The Progression Of Major Depression In Clinically Depressed Adults, Ruth A. Tanyi Jun 2009

The Effects Of A Psychoneuroimmunology Based Lifestyle Intervention In Modifying The Progression Of Major Depression In Clinically Depressed Adults, Ruth A. Tanyi

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Chronic stress can lead to poorly controlled upsurges of cortisol and dysregulation of the hypothalamic pituitary-adrenal axis, thereby contributing to major depression. Hence, researchers have begun to examine the effects of individual psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) interventions and their impact on modifying stress and depression. However, there is a lack of studies that have examined the composite effect(s) of a PNI-based lifestyle intervention and major depression. Thus, this randomized interventional study examined the composite effect(s) of a PNI-based lifestyle intervention: combined progressive muscle relaxation and spiritual guided imagery and humor as an adjunct therapy to modifying the progression of depression. Participants were …

Accuracy Of A Rationally-Derived Method For Predicting Failure In Residential Treatment, Jennifer Pester Grattan Jun 2009

Accuracy Of A Rationally-Derived Method For Predicting Failure In Residential Treatment, Jennifer Pester Grattan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Recent studies of adult mental health treatment have used patient-focused research methods to improve outcomes, by tracking treatment response and comparing it with expected recovery patterns. One such line of research has used rationally-derived and empirically-derived methods to analyze data gathered by the OQ-45 and identify patients who are not responding as expected to treatment. This allows for adjustment of treatment, which results in improved outcomes and lower overall costs.

Similar but less extensive research has provided evidence that these approaches may also improve outcomes in outpatient treatment for children and adolescents. These approaches might be particularly useful in residential …

Parsing The Plagiary Scandals In History And Law, Arthur Austin Jun 2009

Parsing The Plagiary Scandals In History And Law, Arthur Austin

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “In 2002 the history of History was scandal. The narrative started when a Pulitzer Prize winning professor was caught foisting bogus Vietnam War exploits as background for classroom discussion. His fantasy lapse prefaced a more serious irregularity—the author of the Bancroft Prize book award was accused of falsifying key research documents. The award was rescinded. The year reached a crescendo with two plagiarism cases “that shook the history profession to its core.”

Stephen Ambrose and Doris Kearns Goodwin were “crossover” celebrities: esteemed academics—Pulitzer winners—with careers embellished by a public intellectual reputation. The media nurtured a Greek Tragedy —two superstars …

Assaulting America's Mainstream Values: Hans Zeiger's “Get Off My Honor: The Assault On The Boy Scouts Of America”, Eric Alan Isaacson Jun 2009

Assaulting America's Mainstream Values: Hans Zeiger's “Get Off My Honor: The Assault On The Boy Scouts Of America”, Eric Alan Isaacson

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “Lieutenant Colonel Oliver L. North’s Foreword to Hans Zeiger’s book Get Off My Honor: The Assault on the Boy Scouts of America warns that one of America’s most trusted institutions, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), is under siege for advancing “what many of us euphemistically call traditional values.

Euphemistically?

North’s choice of words inadvertently reveals what he and many other so-called “social conservatives” obviously know in their hearts—that the BSA’s recent campaign against gay youth and religious liberals is grounded in something other than America’s proudest traditions and values. Hans Zeiger proceeds himself to remove any illusions in …

Too Many Friends: Social Integration, Network Cohesion And Adolescent Depressive Symptoms, Christina D. Falci, Clea Mcneely Jun 2009

Too Many Friends: Social Integration, Network Cohesion And Adolescent Depressive Symptoms, Christina D. Falci, Clea Mcneely

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Using a nationally representative sample of adolescents, we examine associations among social integration (network size), network cohesion (alter-density), perceptions of social relationships (e.g., social support) and adolescent depressive symptoms. We find that adolescents with either too large or too small networks have higher levels of depressive symptoms. Among girls, however, the ill effects of over-integration only occur at low levels of network cohesion. For boys, in contrast, the ill effects of over-integration only occur at high levels of network cohesion. Large social networks tend not to compromise positive perceptions of friend support or belonging; whereas, small networks are associated with …

Elderly Participation : My Experience As A Retiree, Fan Chun, Peter Tsang Jun 2009

Elderly Participation : My Experience As A Retiree, Fan Chun, Peter Tsang

APIAS Monograph 專題論文

Adaptation to life after retirement can be a challenge. In spite of being psychologically prepared, retirees often experience the feelings of idleness and restlessness. In order to be able to adapt, retirees must learn how to make their life more enjoyable and meaningful. Based on my experience, I suggest volunteering which is meaningful to the individual, family and the community at large. Volunteering can also result in personal growth as it is not only a process of giving but also learning as well. In this paper, I would like to share five of the most essential “ingredients” that would make …

An Evolving Practice Model In The Development Of Lifelong Education For Senior Citizens, Wai Chuen Shum Jun 2009

An Evolving Practice Model In The Development Of Lifelong Education For Senior Citizens, Wai Chuen Shum

APIAS Monograph 專題論文

Promoting productive and successful aging has gradually become a main concern for society at large, in particular, public policy makers, gerontologists and social workers in ageing societies. In Hong Kong, the population aged 60 years and above has increased from 745,500 (13% of the total population) in 1991 to 1,004,400 (14.8%) in 2001 (Census & Statistics Department 2005). This figure will increase to about 2.2 million representing 27.7% of the population by 2023 within a span of about twenty years (Census & Statistics Department 2004). With this rapid growth of the elderly population, greater efforts are urgently needed to prepare …

Adolescents’ Educational Outcomes: Racial And Ethnic Variations In Peer Network Importance, Franklin Goza, Igor Ryabov Jun 2009

Adolescents’ Educational Outcomes: Racial And Ethnic Variations In Peer Network Importance, Franklin Goza, Igor Ryabov

Sociology Faculty Publications

Little attention has been paid to the role of peer social capital in the school context, especially as a predictor of adolescents’ academic outcomes. This study uses a nationally representative (N = 13,738, female = 51%), longitudinal sample and multilevel models to examine how peer networks impact educational achievement and attainment. Results reveal that, in addition to those factors typically associated with academic outcomes (e.g., school composition), two individual-level peer network measures, SES and heterogeneity, had significant effects. Although educational attainment was generally worse in low SES schools, for all ethnic groups higher attainment was associated with attending schools …

Borat As Tragicomedy Of Anti Us-Americanism, Alexei Lalo Jun 2009

Borat As Tragicomedy Of Anti Us-Americanism, Alexei Lalo

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Alexei Lalo discusses in his article "Borat as Tragicomedy of Anti US-Americanism" the 2006 mockumentary in the context of stereotypes and clichés that exist about the United States and elsewhere, particularly in Europe. Anti US-Americanism is arguably at the core of this project, but Borat's creators seem to mock not only US-Americans, but also those who invent and practice clichés about the U.S. Lalo draws parallels between Sacha Baron Cohen's work and the legacies of Lenny Bruce and Charlie Chaplin (most notably his late film A King in New York). Of the numerous socio-cultural problems of the United States Borat …

Political Theory, Political Science, And The End Of Civic Engagement, Ben Berger Jun 2009

Political Theory, Political Science, And The End Of Civic Engagement, Ben Berger

Political Science Faculty Works

Within a span of fifteen years civic engagement has become a cottage industry in political science and political theory, but the term has now outlived its usefulness and exemplifies Giovanni Sartori's worry about conceptual "stretching." This article traces civic engagement's ascension as a catch-all term for almost anything that citizens might happen to do together or alone, and illustrates the confusion that its popularity has occasioned. It proposes that civic engagement meet a well-deserved end, to be replaced with a more nuanced and descriptive set of engagements: political, social, and moral. It also examines the appeal of engagement itself, a …
