Looking Backwards: From 1989 To Han Times And From 2008 To 1964

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

There have been many efforts during the last month, on this site and elsewhere, to bring history into discussions of the twentieth anniversary of June 4th (particularly via allusions the May 4th Movement of 1919), just as a year ago there were many efforts to bring history into discussions of the Beijing Games (especially via allusions to the Berlin Olympics of 1936 and Seoul Olympics of 1988). But there’s still room for this Top Five list of historically minded pieces on 1989 or 2008 that have just appeared and stand out as especially worth checking out, due to either how …

Expressive Writing With University Students With Disabilities, Geraldine Lotze Jun 2009

Expressive Writing With University Students With Disabilities, Geraldine Lotze

Theses and Dissertations

Research suggests college students with high incidence disabilities experience more distress than their peers without disabilities as they adapt to college. The expressive writing paradigm developed by Pennebaker and Beall (1986) effectively reduced distress in college students and other nonclinical samples when participants wrote about emotions they experienced surrounding an upsetting event. Previous research on expressive writing has not addressed the effectiveness of the paradigm with students with disabilities. A randomized control trial study examined changes in distress and daily hassles for participants with disabilities who engaged in expressive writing compared to a control condition in which participants wrote about …

Exposure To A Computer-Hosted Cognitive-Behavioral Intervention For Pathological Gambling: Impact On Gambling Symptomatology And Disclosure Of Gambling Participation In Required Counseling For Adults Receiving Opiate Substitution Therapy For Heroin Addiction, Andrew E. Cameron

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study examined the prevalence of pathological gambling (PG) in an urban methadone-maintenance population (n=125) using the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS). In addition, those meeting criteria for PG, and other inclusion criteria (n=42), were randomly assigned to one of two 6-week treatment groups and given the opportunity to utilize a computer-hosted cognitive-behavioral treatment program for PG. Seventeen participants used the treatment program, but no effect was found on their gambling behavior as measured by the SOGS and Timeline Follow-back procedure. Predictive factors of PG severity and treatment response were examined. Overall, 47.1% of those sampled …

A Study Of Bus Stop Accessibility: Public Health Students Working In Partnership With The Center For Independent Living, Ellen D.S. López, Susan F. Fesperman, Staci H. Graff, Stephanie Schropp, Sarah T. Catalanotto, Allysha C. Robinson, Zaynab I. Major Jun 2009

A Study Of Bus Stop Accessibility: Public Health Students Working In Partnership With The Center For Independent Living, Ellen D.S. López, Susan F. Fesperman, Staci H. Graff, Stephanie Schropp, Sarah T. Catalanotto, Allysha C. Robinson, Zaynab I. Major

Florida Public Health Review

Over 54 million U.S. citizens report living with at least one disability. The Americans with Disabilities Act stipulates legislation that prohibits the discrimination of persons on the basis of disability. Rather than riding the bus in areas that offer a fixed-route bus system, individuals with disabilities often rely on expensive and limited paratransit services, or on family and friends. It has been proposed that with improvements in bus accessibility, riders with disabilities could use the fixed-route system more often and increase their options for independence and community participation. During their 2008 spring semester, participants in the University of Florida College …

Cancer Health Education Preferences Among Miami-Dade County Construction Workers, Alberto J. Caban-Martinez, David J. Lee, Lora E. Fleming, Lourdes Loubriel, Syed M. Ahmed, Aracely Alicea-Clark, John Davis Clark Iii, Evelyn P. Davila Jun 2009

Cancer Health Education Preferences Among Miami-Dade County Construction Workers, Alberto J. Caban-Martinez, David J. Lee, Lora E. Fleming, Lourdes Loubriel, Syed M. Ahmed, Aracely Alicea-Clark, John Davis Clark Iii, Evelyn P. Davila

Florida Public Health Review

Construction work is a high-risk, transient occupation. Worksite outreach programs for cancer risk assessment are highly warranted because workers are exposed to both occupational and environmental carcinogens. We examined the feasibility and acceptability of conducting a paired cancer risk assessment and cancer prevention intervention using “lunch trucks” among construction worksites as the delivery mechanism. Among the 57 completed questionnaires from construction workers on a Miami-Dade County construction high-rise apartment building site, there were 50 (88%) males and 29 (51%) white Hispanics. Over 54% of the construction workers were current smokers of cigarettes, 3.5% chewed tobacco, and 19.3% smoked cigars. Of …

Faith, Crisis, Coping, And Meaning Making After Katrina: A Qualitative, Cross-Cohort Examination, Loren D. Marks, Katie E. Cherry, Jennifer L. Silva

Faculty Publications

Very few studies in the disaster literature include elderly adults, whose life experiences, perceptions, and spiritual needs in the post-disaster period may markedly differ in comparison to younger cohorts. In this 3, we address the topic of how young, middle age, older, and oldest-old adults coped with and made meaning of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita during the storms and their aftermath. The individuals who provided the qualitative interviews upon which this chapter is based were enrolled in the Louisiana Healthy Aging Study (LHAS), a multidisciplinary study of the determinants of longevity and healthy aging (see Cherry, Silva, & Galea, Chapter …

Estimated State And Local Fiscal Effects Of The Nurse Family Partnership Program, Timothy J. Bartik Jun 2009

Estimated State And Local Fiscal Effects Of The Nurse Family Partnership Program, Timothy J. Bartik

Upjohn Institute Policy Papers

This short paper estimates the state and local fiscal benefits of the Nurse Family Partnership (NFP) program. NFP provides nurse home visiting services to low-income first-time mothers. In addition to social benefits, NFP provides state and local fiscal benefits by reducing costs of social services, welfare, and crime, and increasing tax receipts due to increased earnings of mothers and former child participants when they grow up. Based on previous studies, this paper estimates that the present value, in 2007 dollars, of these state and local fiscal benefits is a little over $15,000 per NFP case.

Health Literacy And Treatment Adherence In Hispanic Hiv-Infected Patients, Maria L. Alcaide, José G. Castro

Florida Public Health Review

This study examined health literacy in Hispanic HIV infected patients attending two large public clinics in Miami, Florida and assessed its association with adherence to antiretroviral medications. We performed a cross-sectional study. Eligible participants were enrolled from the Jackson Memorial Hospital HIV outpatient clinic and the University of Miami AIDS clinical research facility. Data were derived from socio-demographic information, the adult AIDS clinical trial group (AACTG) adherence questionnaire, the short test of functional literacy in adults (STOHFLA), and information about HIV clinical stages. Questionnaires were completed by study participants or by the study coordinator in their preferred language and the …

A Wild Weekend In Sports, Richard C. Crepeau Jun 2009

A Wild Weekend In Sports, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It was one of those weekends of sports gluttony, especially if you were fixated on a television set, intent on catching every bit of drama you could find. And indeed there was much to find. Hockey, basketball, tennis, golf, NASCAR, baseball, horse racing, and who knows how much else if you have access to the worldwide network of sports channels available from every corner of the universe. As for me, this weekend was extraordinarily full of sport as I was a bit under the weather and looking for escape from the realities of physical irritation.

A Review Of Corbin And Strauss’ Basics Of Qualitative Research: Techniques And Procedures For Developing Grounded Theory, Barbara Packer-Muti

The Qualitative Report

In the third edition of the classic text, Basics of Qualitative Research: Techniques and Procedures for Developing Grounded Theory, Juliet Corbin continues to present the basics of grounded theory in the context of an evolving world of qualitative research. In doing so she is able to share the traditional essences of the method as put forth in the first two editions while weaving in contemporary changes resulting from her reflections on emergent method, methodology, theory, and who she has become as a researcher

The Psychology Behind Helping And Prosocial Behaviors: An Examination From Intention To Action, Jennifer L. Silva, Loren D. Marks, Katie E. Cherry Jun 2009

The Psychology Behind Helping And Prosocial Behaviors: An Examination From Intention To Action, Jennifer L. Silva, Loren D. Marks, Katie E. Cherry

Faculty Publications

When disasters strike, many people rise to the challenge of providing immediate assistance to those whose lives are in peril. The spectrum of helping behaviors to counter the devastating effects of a natural disaster is vast and can be seen on many levels, from concerned individuals and community groups to volunteer organizations and larger civic entities. In this chapter, we examine the psychology of helping in relation to natural disasters. Definitions of helping behaviors, why we help, and risks of helping others are discussed first. Next, we discuss issues specific to natural disasters and life span considerations, noting the developmental …

The Mexican Economic Crisis Of 1982 And The Brazilian Economic Crisis Of 1999 - Critical Junctures In Economic Policy, John Hogan, Ana Maza Jun 2009

The Mexican Economic Crisis Of 1982 And The Brazilian Economic Crisis Of 1999 - Critical Junctures In Economic Policy, John Hogan, Ana Maza

Articles

This paper utilises a new critical juncture framework to help us determine whether changes to Mexican macroeconomic policy in the early 1980s, and Brazilian macroeconomic policy at the turn of the century, were clean breaks with the past, or continuations of previously established policy pathways. The framework consists of three elements, which must be identified in sequence in order to declare, with some certainty, if an event was a critical juncture. These are crisis, ideational change, and radical policy change.

This study contributes to the theoretical discussions about the influence of education-entertainment programming on consumers of the genre. Data from the end-line evaluation of an EE program produced by the BBC World Service Trust in India, Jasoos (Detective) Vijay, is used. The analysis focused on 834 sexually active young men, the key demographic target audience for the program. Using structural equation modeling techniques, an initial knowledge, attitudes, and practices model is examined. Adding self-efficacy and interpersonal discussion improve this model. Not only is interpersonal discussion important, but the target others with whom that discussion occurs are also important for predicting …
