From Traditional Library Instruction To Collaborative Instruction: Charting The Course Toward Evidence-Based Practice, Pamela M. Corley, Julie K. Tilson
From Traditional Library Instruction To Collaborative Instruction: Charting The Course Toward Evidence-Based Practice, Pamela M. Corley, Julie K. Tilson
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2007
This presentation will explore how a library’s academic liaison program led to a strong teaching partnership within an academic division. The goal of the liaison program is to provide an essential link between the University of Southern California’s Norris Medical Library and the University’s academic communities. This goal was achieved when a research support librarian teamed up with a professor of physical therapy to develop a curriculum for physical therapy students.
The objective of this teaching alliance was for first-year doctor of physical therapy students to learn basic skills for Evidence Based Practice. The collaboration combined the librarian's expertise in …
From Guest Lecturer To Assignment Consultant: Exploring A New Role For The Teaching Librarian, Kathleen Gallagher
From Guest Lecturer To Assignment Consultant: Exploring A New Role For The Teaching Librarian, Kathleen Gallagher
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2007
For many academic libraries, the library instruction session (or sessions), whether delivered on demand or integrated into strategically targeted courses, is still the cornerstone, the basic unit, of our information literacy programs. Within these programs the instructional role of the librarian often remains limited to that of “guest lecturer.” By rethinking this role and repositioning ourselves as consultants in assignment design, librarians can contribute to an array of deliverables more closely aligned with course goals and sharply honed to improve learning outcomes.
With examples drawn from a multi-disciplinary selection of courses, this session will focus on the process and products …

Developing A Gameplan: Libraries And Campus Athletic Departments, Bill Kelm, Diane Mizrachi, Marc Mason, Julie Tharp
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2007
At a number of academic libraries, librarians have begun partnering with Athletic Departments to deliver information literacy to freshman athletes. This breakout session will present three different endeavors designed to meet the needs of the incoming student athlete.
UCLA’s College Library has recently expanded collaboration with their athletic department from an annual one-shot for incoming football players to an ongoing partnership integrating library instruction and awareness into the freshman football and basketball teams’ total academic experience.
Arizona State University faced two challenges: help student-athletes learn to use the Library's resources, and train their tutors and mentors. Every ASU freshman athlete …
Campus Collaboration To Build A Series Of Information Competency Workshops, Nancy Getty, Deborah Moore
Campus Collaboration To Build A Series Of Information Competency Workshops, Nancy Getty, Deborah Moore
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2007
Over the past seven years Glendale Community College has developed a series of nine workshops that address the core competencies for information literacy at the College. This workshop program constitutes a unique model for delivering information competency instruction and could be adapted to any institutional setting. We have had many inquiries about how the program was developed and how it functions. We will present a session that includes a brief overview of the program, discusses the elements and collaboration important to its evolution, presents current quantitative research that indicates our level of success, and offers strategies to apply this approach …

Building Campus-Wide Information Literacy Programs, Lynn D. Lampert, Catherine Haras
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2007
The reality of building a campus-wide information literacy program may vary from institution to institution but working programs all share important similarities. Librarians from California State University System campuses (Northridge and Los Angeles) - and Rider University will discuss their approaches and successes at both garnering support for and developing campus-wide information literacy programs that incorporate information literacy student learning outcomes into required General Education programming. The session will focus on how active service on university-wide curriculum, assessment and general education committees directly impacted and informed their libraries and campus information literacy programs and pedagogies. The presenters will demonstrate how …

A Collaborative Voyage To Improve Students' Career Information Literacy, Angela Farrar, Lateka Grays, Diane Vanderpol, Amanda Cox
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2007
Librarians, a member of the Hotel College faculty, and a member of the Career Services staff at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas collaborated in the design, implementation and evaluation of a non-traditional research assignment asking students to demonstrate real world information literacy skills.
Session attendees will explore the process by which the traditional librarian-teaching faculty member collaboration grew into a richer project involving a non-traditional partnering. Attendees will be guided through a discussion on levels of collaboration and an audit of potential non-traditional partner opportunities at their own institutions.
Attendees will examine the product of this partnership: an assignment …
Brain Research And Education: Fad Or Foundation?, Pat Wolfe
Brain Research And Education: Fad Or Foundation?, Pat Wolfe
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2007
Plenary Speaker
Brain research is constantly providing new revelations about how the brain works and how we all learn. We now have a much more solid foundation on which to base educational decisions. While many current educational practices fit well with the research, others run counter to what we are learning and pose significant challenges to those who work in schools. This session will provide a clear explanation of the most educationally significant research developments and will show how this research can be translated into everyday practice.

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2007
The 35th annual LOEX conferences continued the tradition of bringing the best together in library instruction and information literacy, while also starting something new - LOEX’s first ever trip out to the West Coast. San Diego, California treated us well and provided a great venue to learn about the latest in library instruction. In particular, a focus for LOEX 2007 was reaching beyond the library and out to the community - whether that community is the rest of the university/college or is the city/town in which the library is located. Hopefully, as attendees go back to their libraries and implement …

How Selected Personality Factors Affect The Relationships Between Marital Satisfaction, Sexual Satisfaction, And Infidelity, Amanda Marie Campbell
How Selected Personality Factors Affect The Relationships Between Marital Satisfaction, Sexual Satisfaction, And Infidelity, Amanda Marie Campbell
Doctoral Dissertations
Although research has illuminated some differences between those who engage in sexual behavior outside of their marriage and those who do not, there is a lack of attention in the literature to complex interactions among variables in their relationships to infidelity. There is evidence that marital satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, and personality are all related to infidelity but research has failed to investigate how personality may influence these other two variables in their relationship to infidelity. Thus, the proposed study explored possible effects that selected personality factors have on the relationships between marital satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, and infidelity. The results revealed …

"Aquí No Pasó Nada": Terror, Remembrance And Healing In A Guatemalan "Green Zone", William G. Wagner
Anthropology ETDs
This research focuses on the experiences of survivors of political violence and their healers in Momostenango, Totonicapán. The majority population of Momostenango is Kiche' Maya. During Guatemala's civil war (1960-1996), the state used terror to silence popular resistance and to neutralize the threat of insurgent guerilla forces that drew wide support from Maya communities. From 1981 to 1983 state army and paramilitary forces resorted to scorched earth tactics that two different truth commissions subsequently characterized as genocidal. During the war, the military designated the town as a 'green zone' (a region sympathetic to and supportive of the military's counterinsurgency project). …
Resurrection Machines: An Analysis Of Burial Sites In Ancient Egypt’S Valley Of The Kings As Catalysts For Spiritual Rebirth, Jarrett Zeman
Resurrection Machines: An Analysis Of Burial Sites In Ancient Egypt’S Valley Of The Kings As Catalysts For Spiritual Rebirth, Jarrett Zeman
Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts
In Ancient Egyptian tombs, processes associated with sympathetic magic acted as a direct catalyst for resurrection. Sympathetic magic, defined as an action, object or depiction whose effect resembles its cause, is reflected in royal tombs constructed during Egypt‟s New Kingdom (1550-1069 BCE) in the Valley of the Kings. However, sympathetic magic has rarely been applied to Ancient Egyptian topics in an explicit fashion. As a result, the tombs of Amenhotep III (KV22), Seti I (KV17) and Ramesses IX (KV6) are analyzed as case studies of this phenomenon. Change and continuity evident in each tomb‟s architectural structure, decoration, and physical burial …

Complexity, Cofactors, And The Failure Of Aids Policy In Africa, Eileen Stillwaggon
Complexity, Cofactors, And The Failure Of Aids Policy In Africa, Eileen Stillwaggon
Economics Faculty Publications
Global AIDS policy still treats HIV as an exceptional case, abstracting from the context in which infection occurs. Policy is based on a simplistic theory of HIV causation, and evaluated using outdated tools of health economics. Recent calls for a health systems strategy – preventing and treating HIV within a programme of comprehensive health care – have not yet influenced the silo approach of AIDS policy.
Evidence continues to accumulate, showing that multiple factors, such as malnutrition, malaria and helminthes, increase the risk of sexual and vertical transmission of HIV. Moreover, complementary interventions that reduce viral load, improve immune response, …

Credit Cards And Inflation, John Geanakoplos, Pradeep Dubey
Credit Cards And Inflation, John Geanakoplos, Pradeep Dubey
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The introduction and widespread use of credit cards increases trading efficiency but, by also increasing the velocity of money, it causes inflation, in the absence of monetary intervention. If the monetary authority attempts to restore pre-credit card price levels by reducing the money supply, it might have to sacrifice the efficiency gains. When there is default on credit cards, there is even more inflation, and less efficiency gains. The monetary authority might then have to accept less than pre-credit card efficiency in order to restore pre-credit card price levels, or else it will have to accept inflation if it is …

Alternative Policies And Sea-Level Rise In The Rice-2009 Model, William D. Nordhaus
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The present study extends earlier research by presenting the results of a new and updated version of the RICE model (Regional Integrated model of Climate and the Economy), labeled the RICE-2009 model. The model is a regionalized, dynamic model that incorporates an end-to-end treatment of economic growth, emissions, climate change, damages, and emissions controls. The model allows projections of what will occur with no policies, with efficient policies be, how nations can undertake policies to limit climate change (in the current runs to 2°C), and the impacts of limited participation. These new estimates indicate that coordinated international policies have a …
Selecting A Unique Competitive Equilibrium With Default Penalties, Cheng-Zhong Qin, Martin Shubik
Selecting A Unique Competitive Equilibrium With Default Penalties, Cheng-Zhong Qin, Martin Shubik
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The enlargement of the general-equilibrium structure to allow default subject to penalties results in a construction of a simple mechanism for selecting a unique competitive equilibrium. We consider economies for which a common credit money can be applied to uniquely select any competitive equilibrium with suitable default penalties. We identify two classes of such economies. One consists of economies with utility functions being homogeneous of degree 1; the other consists of economies with the number of consumers equal to the number of commodities and traders having quasi-linear utility functions with respect to different commodities.

How Does One Become Spiritual? The Spiritual Modeling Inventory Of Life Environments (Smile), Doug Oman, Carl E. Thoresen, Crystal L. Park, Philip R. Shaver, Ralph W. Hood, Thomas G. Plante
Psychology
We report psychometric properties, correlates and underlying theory of the Spiritual Modeling Index of Life Environments (SMILE), a measure of perceptions of spiritual models, defined as everyday and prominent people who have functioned for respondents as exemplars of spiritual qualities, such as compassion, self-control, or faith. Demographic, spiritual, and personality correlates were examined in an ethnically diverse sample of college students from California, Connecticut, and Tennessee (N=1010). A summary measure of model influence was constructed from perceived models within family, school, religious organization, and among prominent individuals from both tradition and media. The SMILE, based on concepts from Bandura's (1986) …

Market Valuation Of Accrued Social Security Benefits, John Geanakoplos, Stephen P. Zeldes
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
One measure of the health of the Social Security system is the difference between the market value of the trust fund and the present value of benefits accrued to date. How should present values be computed for this calculation in light of future uncertainties? We think it is important to use market value. Since claims on accrued benefits are not currently traded in financial markets, we cannot directly observe a market value. In this paper, we use a model to estimate what the market price for these claims would be if they were traded. In valuing such claims, the key …
An Improved Bootstrap Test Of Stochastic Dominance, Oliver B. Linton, Kyungchul Song, Yoon-Jae Whang
An Improved Bootstrap Test Of Stochastic Dominance, Oliver B. Linton, Kyungchul Song, Yoon-Jae Whang
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We propose a new method of testing stochastic dominance that improves on existing tests based on the standard bootstrap or subsampling. The method admits prospects involving infinite as well as finite dimensional unknown parameters, so that the variables are allowed to be residuals from nonparametric and semiparametric models. The proposed bootstrap tests have asymptotic sizes that are less than or equal to the nominal level uniformly over probabilities in the null hypothesis under regularity conditions. This paper also characterizes the set of probabilities that the asymptotic size is exactly equal to the nominal level uniformly. As our simulation results show, …
Nonparametric Estimation Of A Polarization Measure, Gordon J. Anderson, Oliver B. Linton, Yoon-Jae Whang
Nonparametric Estimation Of A Polarization Measure, Gordon J. Anderson, Oliver B. Linton, Yoon-Jae Whang
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper develops methodology for nonparametric estimation of a polarization measure due to Anderson (2004) and Anderson, Ge, and Leo (2006) based on kernel estimation techniques. We give the asymptotic distribution theory of our estimator, which in some cases is nonstandard due to a boundary value problem. We also propose a method for conducting inference based on estimation of unknown quantities in the limiting distribution and show that our method yields consistent inference in all cases we consider. We investigate the finite sample properties of our methods by simulation methods. We give an application to the study of polarization within …
The Leverage Cycle, John Geanakoplos
The Leverage Cycle, John Geanakoplos
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Equilibrium determines leverage, not just interest rates. Variations in leverage cause fluctuations in asset prices. This leverage cycle can be damaging to the economy, and should be regulated.
