Recent Privatizations In Pakistan And Their Impact, Ishrat Husain Dr. Jul 2009

Recent Privatizations In Pakistan And Their Impact, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

The decade of 1970s in Pakistan witnessed a massive redistribution of national assets from the private owners to the state. The reason underlying the then Government’s thinking for this extremely radical action was that the national wealth was being concentrated in the hands of few families and the rich were getting richer and the poor getting poorer. It was asserted by the proponents of this strategy that the state control over allocation of the resources would promote the best interests of the poor. The intellectual support for this strategy was drawn from the success of the Soviet Union and the …

Confidential Sources And Contempt Of Court: An Argument For Change, Angel Fahy Jul 2009

Confidential Sources And Contempt Of Court: An Argument For Change, Angel Fahy

Dissertations

This thesis sought to examine the law on contempt of court as it pertained to journalists’ refusal to give evidence that would reveal the identity of their confidential sources of information. It argued that current law in this jurisdiction does not go far enough to protect journalists’ sources and, consequently, press freedom. It contended that despite the introduction of a statutory provision in the UK to provide qualified immunity from contempt charges for journalists who refused to reveal their sources, the law is not sufficiently clear to allow journalists to grant confidentiality without fear of prosecution. This thesis found that …

Spanish-Speaking Parents' Perceptions Of School-Based Crisis Response., Brenda Dean Jul 2009

Spanish-Speaking Parents' Perceptions Of School-Based Crisis Response., Brenda Dean

Theses and Dissertations

American schools are becoming increasingly diverse. With the increasing diversity in school enrollment, professionals are faced with the challenge of providing culturally sensitive services in all areas, including crisis intervention planning. Additionally, language differences also affect help-seeking behaviors and may serve as a strong barrier to effective service delivery. Taking into account individual school and district demographics, schools must consider strategies to best meet the needs of students and families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. As a starting point, this thesis provides an overview of the literature on school crisis response. Current demographics in U.S. public schools, the perceptions …

Technology And Poverty Reduction In South Asia, Ishrat Husain Dr. Jul 2009

Technology And Poverty Reduction In South Asia, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

The 2008 Human Development Report (HDR) makes a drastic but a significant departure from the previous analysis in the past reports by examining the relationship between Technology and Poverty reduction. The two channels through which Technology can affect poverty reduction are indirect, i.e. by accelerating growth impulses via productivity gains and direct, i.e. by using technology in better health care, education, water supply, agriculture and good governance. As much has been written about the technology-growth channel the Report rightly focuses on the direct channel. Within South Asia, it must be conceded that India is an exception as it has become …

A Reprise, Or Round Three: Using A Database Management Program As A Decision-Support System For The Cancellation Of Serials, Judith M. Nixon Jul 2009

A Reprise, Or Round Three: Using A Database Management Program As A Decision-Support System For The Cancellation Of Serials, Judith M. Nixon

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Annual journal inflation rates of eight percent or higher have compelled libraries to cancel journals. Since 1992 Purdue Libraries have had three major cancellation projects. This article reviews how the Humanities, Social Science and Education Library approached this task in 2009 and developed a database management program to identify titles based on two criteria: low use and the availability of the title in full text in one of three aggregator databases. The education and humanities departments reached the cancellation goal, but several social science departments had to transfer funds from the book budget to accommodate their journal subscription costs. This …

Confronting Bullying: Searching For Strategies In Children's Literature, Emily Ellen Moulton Jul 2009

Confronting Bullying: Searching For Strategies In Children's Literature, Emily Ellen Moulton

Theses and Dissertations

Literature is a great resource for teaching valuable principles to children, including how to cope with bullying. However, no analyses exist regarding the appropriateness of these books. Children's books were identified as potential stories for bibliotherapy with elementary school children who face bullying. Information presented in selected books was compared to the current research literature on bullying. Each book's content was analyzed according to important variables, including the type of bullying behavior, gender of the perpetrator and target, presence of bystanders, adult involvement, and resolution of the problem. Verbal bullying was most commonly observed, followed closely by physical bullying. The …

Benefits Of Hiking: A Means-End Approach On The Appalachian Trail, Eddie Hill, Marni Goldenberg, Barbara Freidt

Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration

The purpose of this research was to examine the outcomes prompting hiking along the Appalachian Trail (AT). By using means-end theory, linkages between attributes, consequences, and values of the AT hiking experience were made. The researchers conducted forty-three interviews of AT hikers. Self-fulfillment, self-reliance, fun and enjoyment of life, and warm relationships with others were some of the values that emerged. Specifically, strong links existed between hiking and exercise, exercise and health, health and fun and enjoyment of life. While this area of research on the AT is new, results of this study can be used by recreational professionals that …

The Spread Of Change In French Negation, Angus Grieve-Smith Jul 2009

The Spread Of Change In French Negation, Angus Grieve-Smith

Linguistics ETDs

Many varieties of French have changed over the years from expressing predicate negation (Geurts 1998) with ne alone, to the embracing construction ne ... pas, and then to postverbal pas alone (Jespersen 1917). When the increase in the frequency of ne ... pas over time is plotted on a graph, it takes the S shape of the logistic function (Kroch 1989). Bybee and Thompson (1997) note that "the type frequency of a pattern determines its degree of productivity," but "high frequency forms with alternations resist analogical leveling.' These two observations provide an explanation for the logistic progression observed by Kroch …

Objective And Subjective Residential Context And Urban Children’S Weight Status And Physical And Sedentary Activities, Rachel Tolbert Kimbro, Jeanne Brooks-Gunn, Sara Mclanahan Jul 2009

Objective And Subjective Residential Context And Urban Children’S Weight Status And Physical And Sedentary Activities, Rachel Tolbert Kimbro, Jeanne Brooks-Gunn, Sara Mclanahan

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

This paper fills this gap by addressing two research questions: first, we ask, are the activity patterns (outdoor play and television watching) of five-year-old children living in large cities associated with children’s weight status? Second, we ask, is residential context, and neighborhood safety in particular, associated with children’s activity patterns? Consistent with past research, we find that outdoor play is negatively associated with weight status, while television watching is positively associated with weight status. We also find, unexpectedly, that the poorest children are playing outdoors the most and watching the most television. Finally, we find that three measures of residential …

Human Security In Colombia, Carolina Forero, Sally Fishback Jul 2009

Human Security In Colombia, Carolina Forero, Sally Fishback

Josef Korbel Journal of Advanced International Studies

The Human Security Index for Colombia (HSIC) is a quantitative analysis of the most pressing concerns facing the nation. An introduction and demographic depiction outlining relevant historical events is included to better explain how Colombia has progressed into its current state. Research compiled by the government and other official sources is used to explore both the social welfare and physical safety of all Colombians. Issues surrounding the domestic conflict as well as nonviolent concerns are dually mentioned, and data is broken down by department to depict the regions of concern. Two sub-indices were constructed and intentionally separated, as they are …

Latino Migration Within New York State: Motivations And Settlement Experience, Katherine W. Platt, Lina P. Rincón Jul 2009

Latino Migration Within New York State: Motivations And Settlement Experience, Katherine W. Platt, Lina P. Rincón

Policy Documents

This study focuses on understanding why and how Latinos decide to migrate within New York State, specifically in Albany. The authors examine the reasons that push Latinos to migrate internally hoping to find alternative explanations from those provided by neoclassical economics approaches which argue that migration decision-making processes are based on rational cost-benefit calculations (Massey et al. 1997). The authors hope these explanations contribute to grounded policy and program recommendations seeking to improve Latino life in the Albany area and in New York State. While economic opportunity (job opportunities/professional development) is still the leading reason that pulls Latinos from different …

Ohio Women In Psychology: A Biographical Account Of Mary Henle And Janet Taylor Spence, Kolina J. Delgado

Psychology Student Publications

In conducting a review of major contributors to the field of psychology, one would undoubtedly come across the names Mary Henle and Janet Taylor Spence. Not only were these two psychologists instrumental in the development of the field but they were also faced with challenges inexperienced by many of their colleagues. These challenges were due simply to the fact that they were women in a male dominated field and within a greater context, a male dominated society. In addition to their shared gender, these women have in common that they are both natives of Ohio. The current paper will provide …

Beautifying Data In The Real World, Andrew Lang, Jean-Claude Bradley, Rajarshi Guha, Pierre Lindenbaum, Cameron Neylon, Anthony J. Williams, Egon Willighagen

College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship

There are at least two problems with collecting "Beautiful Data" in the real world and presenting it to the interested public. The first is that the universe is inherently noisy. In most cases collecting the same piece of data twice will not give the same answer. This is because the collection process can never be made completely error-free. Fluctuations of temperature, pressure, humidity, power sources, water or reagent quality, precision of weighing, or human error will all conspire to obscure the “correct” answer. The art in experimental measurement lies in designing the data collection process so as to minimize the …

Idaho Participation In Naco: The Effect On Idaho Corporate Name Authority Control, Cheri Folkner, Barbara Glackin Jul 2009

Idaho Participation In Naco: The Effect On Idaho Corporate Name Authority Control, Cheri Folkner, Barbara Glackin

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

In 2005 five Idaho institutions joined the Name Authority Cooperative Program (NACO) of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging in order to expand the underlying data that help library users find and identify resources and to improve cataloging efficiencies within the state. The objective of this study was to determine what effect this participation by Idaho institutions in the NACO program had on the authority control of Idaho agencies and other Idaho corporate entities. Data analysis of Idaho corporate name authority records showed this participation significantly increased authority control for these entities. In less than three years, Idaho institutions created more …
