The Marathon Of Life : An Exploratory Study Of Female Cancer Survivors' Experiences With Training For And Participating In A Marathon After Their Cancer Diagnosis, Elizabeth Mary Donahue
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study explored the experiences of female cancer survivors who have trained for and participated in a marathon after their cancer diagnosis. More specifically, the research focused on women's motivation for choosing to participate in a marathon, their experience with training and participating in their first post-cancer marathon, and the ways in which their marathon experience impacted their recovery process. Further, this study investigated whether women felt they had lost a sense of control during their diagnosis and treatment and if training for and participating in a marathon allowed them to regain a sense of control that had been lost. …

A Multivariate Analysis Of The Sociodemographic Predictors Of Methamphetamine Production And Use, Todd A. Armstrong, Gaylene Armstrong
A Multivariate Analysis Of The Sociodemographic Predictors Of Methamphetamine Production And Use, Todd A. Armstrong, Gaylene Armstrong
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
To date, research testing the community characteristics associated with methamphetamine production and use has found that the community-level sociodemographic predictors of methamphetamine production and use vary from those of drug use in general. In this study, the authors furthered the research in this area using data from all 102 counties in Illinois. These data included measures of sociodemographic characteristics taken from the U.S. census, measures of methamphetamine production and use, and a measure of arrests for controlled-substance violations. Negative binomial regression models showed that poverty and the racial and ethnic compositions of communities were the strongest and most consistent predictors …

Self-Image In Adolescent Foster Youth Who Have Had Multiple Out-Of-Home Placements, Sarah Cartier
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study was undertaken to determine the feasibility of data collection from adolescents in foster care. Additionally, how do adolescent foster youth who have had multiple placements perceive their self-image and is it comparable to the self-image of an adolescent population not in foster care? Adolescent foster youth who have had multiple placements are at higher risk for negative personal, familial, environmental, communal, and societal relations. Areas of self-image identified as positive should be supported and areas identified as reflecting a lower self-image should be addressed both clinically and pragmatically. Adolescent foster youth in the custody of the Department of …

"There Is Something You Should Know" : The Reasons Therapists Disclose Their Chronic Physical Illness To Clients And The Therapeutic Implications Of Self Disclosure, Caitlin Mara Cotter
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study sought to ascertain reasons why therapists with a chronic physical illness chose to self disclose information about their illness to their clients, and their perception of the effects those disclosures had on the therapeutic relationship. This qualitative, exploratory study aimed to expand the body of knowledge on self disclosures of this nature, which is limited and written largely from a psychoanalytical perspective. Licensed psychotherapists diagnosed with a chronic physical illness in adulthood, who had self disclosed their illness to at least one client, were recruited from the Boston metropolitan area to participate in a single, in-person interview. Ten …

Looking At Substance Use Disorders Through Lenses Of Self Psychology And Existential Psychotherapy : A Theoretical Study, Michael E. Dilorenzo
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical study explored the theoretical frameworks of self psychology and existential psychotherapy in the context of their usefulness for clinical social workers in their therapeutic work with clients with substance use disorders (SUDs). The central guiding question of this thesis was, "How can the theoretical lenses of self psychology and existential psychotherapy help clinical social workers and other mental health professionals to better understand SUDs and inform clinicians' work with addicted clients?" In this theoretical study, self psychology and existential psychotherapy were examined and employed as a means of understanding the nature of SUDs. In addition, these two theories …

Identity Development Among Black Gay Men : The Relationship Between Racial And Sexual Orientation Identity Development, Sandra Lauren Dipillo
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study examined the relationship between racial and sexual orientation identity development among Black gay men. Preliminary research implied that the relationship between these two processes was complex though there was little research that explored it. Fifty-seven Black gay men participated in an anonymous online survey which asked a range of questions about racial and sexual orientation identity as well as the experience of being both Black and gay. Findings indicated that Black gay men experience more internalized homophobia and racism than individuals who are Black or gay but not both. The results also implied that the two developmental processes …

Mental Health And Developmental Factors Related To Juvenile Adjudicative Competence, Tracy Ann Donsky
Mental Health And Developmental Factors Related To Juvenile Adjudicative Competence, Tracy Ann Donsky
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The current study assessed factors associated with competency to stand trial (CST) for 134 male juvenile offenders. Written reports of each juvenile's competency evaluation provided data on age, educational and family background, mental health, types of offense, and understanding of the juvenile justice system. Various differences emerged between 10-15 and 16-18 year age groups, including behavioral and developmental issues for younger youth, and school and substance use problems among older youth. Psychosis, paternal presence, and understanding of court roles and procedures differentiated the youth determined to be competent to proceed to trial versus those who were not. To a less …

An Overseas Example Of "Lighter Is Better" : The Implications Of Colorism Among Male Sex Workers In Thailand, Eugene Espejo Canotal
An Overseas Example Of "Lighter Is Better" : The Implications Of Colorism Among Male Sex Workers In Thailand, Eugene Espejo Canotal
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Throughout history, the idea that lighter skin is better than darker skin has been found in many countries and societies. People with light skin were associated with being wealthy enough to remain indoors while people with dark skin were assumed to have attained that skin tone from working outdoors and being exposed to the sun. Colorism is a form of skin color stratification in which light-skinned people are privileged over darkskinned people, in terms of: access to education, work opportunities, and being perceived as attractive and possessing positive personality traits. European colonialism and slavery reinforced that not only having white …
Juvenile Sex Offenders' Therapeutic Alliance : The Intricate Dynamics Of Alliance In Relation To Attachment, Trauma, And Religion, Rian Michelle Bovard-Johns
Juvenile Sex Offenders' Therapeutic Alliance : The Intricate Dynamics Of Alliance In Relation To Attachment, Trauma, And Religion, Rian Michelle Bovard-Johns
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Therapeutic alliance is the most influential predictor of successful treatment with trans-theoretical capacity. Alliance is directly influenced by client variables which are unique to clinical context. Initial research has evidenced the effectiveness of alliance with adult sex offenders and delinquent youth. The present study extends research, incorporating variables unique to juvenile sex offenders in corrections facilities. Predominant client variables of trauma symptoms and attachment patterns are measured for 332 adjudicated male sex offenders' alliance with staff. The results reveal a significant relationship (F =8.7, DF =171, p <.000) between youths' attachment to peers and communication with fathers that positively predicts alliance and that anxiety based on trauma negatively predicts alliance. Implications future research and treatment are provided.

Siaolin Stands Up
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
Bouncing over ruined roads washed out by Typhoon Morakot (some roadbeds have been transformed into river beds), a group of scholars (including myself) drove to the township of Chia-hsien 甲仙 (Kaohsiung County) on August 18 to attend a press conference marking the formation of the Reconstruction Committee for Siaolin’s Plains Aborigine Culture (小林平埔文化重建委員會). Arriving in Chia-hsien, one is soon struck by the roar of helicopters and generators, as well as the smell of flood debris and betel nut juice, which serve to cover up other odors. Power has been restored, but there is still no running water, which puts a …

What's The Skinny On Fat Women In Psychotherapy : Mental Health Clinicians' Countertransference With Women Of Size, Maisha Najuma Aza
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study was conducted to explore mental health clinicians' possible countertransference with clients who are women of size. This study intends to contribute to the growing clinical literature on size bias in psychotherapy by focusing on clinicians' countertransference in depth. Twelve clinicians participated in this study, from various mental health backgrounds and degrees from licensed clinical social workers to clinical psychologists. The data in this study suggests that clinicians experience intense, and often negative, countertransference with their clients who are women of size. Some clinicians were aware of their fat bias and prejudice out in the world, yet were …

Inextricably Intertwined : Identity Development In Adults With A Disabled Sibling, Sarah M. Rigney
Inextricably Intertwined : Identity Development In Adults With A Disabled Sibling, Sarah M. Rigney
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study sought to answer the question "What is the long-term impact on the identity formation of adults who grew up with a disabled sibling?" The bulk of literature exploring the impact of a sibling's disability on his/her non-disabled sibling focuses primarily on children. With so few studies asking non-disabled adult siblings about their experience, however, the research examining this unique relationship lacks depth and scope. In exploring this relationship through an adult lens, there were two primary hypotheses: 1) non-disabled siblings would report having an experience that was rich with both rewards and challenges, and 2) this relationship would …

What Is The Efficacy Of Evidence-Based Practice In Mental Health Treatment Of Diverse Ethnic Minorities?, Claire Denise Villegas
What Is The Efficacy Of Evidence-Based Practice In Mental Health Treatment Of Diverse Ethnic Minorities?, Claire Denise Villegas
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This mixed-method exploratory study attempted to examine the efficacy of evidence-based practice (EBP) in mental health treatment of diverse ethnic minorities. The study utilized an online survey consisting of demographic, multiple-choice and narrative questions. Twenty-one clinicians who utilized EBP interventions in their clinical practice completed this survey. The current EBP research lacks equal representation of ethnic minorities in the study populations. EBPs are increasingly mandated through agency policy and legislation (Carter, 2008). While broad claims are sometimes made that such interventions will "work" for everyone, it is noteworthy that diverse ethnic minorities are often not included in much of the …
