In this autobiography and collection of essays, we learn how Harold Varmus created a life of consequence, enabled by his passions, a competitive streak, a certain quirky social deftness, a sixth sense for navigating political minefields, and a dose of chutzpah. Varmus readily admits that it was prizes (actually the Nobel Prize, although he also won the Lasker and many others) that opened doors for him to the halls of power. While the Nobel provides a public voice, it is the rare laureate who can parlay the media attention into a second career as the successful leader of a public …

Women Head Of The Village Councils And Water Borne Diseases, Ambrish A. Dongre
Women Head Of The Village Councils And Water Borne Diseases, Ambrish A. Dongre
Ambrish A Dongre
This paper examines the relation between prevalence of water- borne diseases and gender of the head of the village councils by exploiting a `natural experiment' in local governance in India. A constitutional amendment in early 1990s ensured that only women could be the head in at least one- third of the village councils selected randomly. Utilizing a unique sample survey, we show that having a woman as the council head seems to have no effect on prevalence of water borne diseases. But if we look into the sub- categories of women council heads, we find that women council heads from …
Private Information Of Nonpaternalistic Altruism: Exaggeration And Reciprocation Of Generosity, Yuk-Fai Fong
Private Information Of Nonpaternalistic Altruism: Exaggeration And Reciprocation Of Generosity, Yuk-Fai Fong
Yuk-Fai Fong
Applying techniques developed by Geanakoplos et al. (1989), this paper analyzes the gift exchange between agents with privately observed nonpaternalistic altruism. I find that gift giving between agents under private information of altruism can be analyzed as a conventional signaling game. After applying standard refinements of signaling games, I show that, over nondegenerate ranges of parameter values, private information introduces systematic biases in agents' behavior. First, agents tend to give larger gifts than under full information. Second, despite that fact that agents have no intrinsic concern for reciprocity or fairness, the more altruistic the recipient is, the more the donor …

Making The Connection: Latino Immigrants And Their Cross-Border Ties, Roger D. Waldinger, Thomas Soehl
Making The Connection: Latino Immigrants And Their Cross-Border Ties, Roger D. Waldinger, Thomas Soehl
Roger D Waldinger
Whether involving ethnographic or survey research, recent research on immigrants’ home country connections has focused on the “transmigrants” -- immigrants who “live their lives across borders.” Doing so leaves out both the larger number who engage in some cross-border activity and those who fall out of the cross-border connection altogether. To broaden the scope of inquiry, this paper analyzes data from a nationally representative survey of Latino immigrants in the United States, designed to collect information on the cross-border activities of money-sending, communication, travel. We first analyze the determinants of each type of connection, and then the factors contributing to …

Hiding "Bad" News On Fridays? Not Such A Good Idea!, Leon Zolotoy
Leon Zolotoy
Previous studies reported firms management to release more"bad" news on Fridays compared to the rest of weekdays, potentially exploiting investors limited attention. In this study we examine whether this strategy was detected by investors. Our key findings are as follows. First, consistent with previous studies, we find that over the last two decades firms consistently reported more "bad" news on Friday than during the rest of trading days. Second, we report a structural shift in the earnings-return relation with stock returns becoming more sensitive to the Friday negative earnings news compared to similar announcements released during the rest of the …

Developing A Multifaceted Approach To Identify A Core Undergraduate Browsing Collection, Doug Way, Sarah Beaubien, Julie Garrison

In planning for a new library that will include a limited number of open stacks, Grand Valley State University librarians were asked to identify what materials should be reserved for the browsable shelves. To accomplish this, librarians considered user behavior by discipline, material types, shelving options and the role of core collections. This paper will discuss these issues as well as differences in how library resources are located and the impact of new discovery tools, such as Innovative Interface's Encore, Bowker’s Syndetics, and Google’s Book Search on redefining browsability. The paper will also include a discussion of resources used in …

What Does It Mean To Be A Science Librarian 2.0?, Melissa J. Harvey

Science librarians, as well as other librarians, have seen ample new technologies come and go over the years. Librarians experiment and try to find ways to employ the new tools in our libraries. A driving force in our decision making about what tools to use should always be our patrons and whether the tools can help us do a better job of delivering services. This paper discusses what technologies have proven to be successful, as well as other thoughts to bear in mind as librarians evaluate Web 2.0 tools for science libraries.

Academic Librarian Integration Into Teacher Education Distance Learning Programs, Brenna Helmstutler
Brenna Helmstutler
Having convenient, instant access to electronic library resources in academia is excellent as research can be conducted literally anywhere and at anytime; however, a level of user self-direction is required for optimal results, creating the need for librarian interaction to guide the user towards acquiring this self-direction most effectively. As more institutions add online degree programs, it is essential that librarians are integrated within so that participating students have access to the same (or at least, equivalent) library resources and services as those who are on campus, and also develop sound research skills for information literacy acquisition. Although librarians have …

To analyze the relationships between alcohol misuse and two types of acute health care use—hospital admissions and emergency room (ER) episodes. Data Sources/Study Setting . The first (2001/2002) and second (2004/2005) waves of the National Epidemiological Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC). Study Design . Longitudinal study using a group of adults (18–60 years in Wave 1, N =23,079). Gender-stratified regression analysis adjusted for a range of covariates associated with health care use. First-difference methods corrected for potential omitted variable bias. Data Collection . The target population of the NESARC was the civilian noninstitutionalized population aged 18 and older …

A Commentary On The Old Saw That Same-Sex Marriage Threatens Civilization, Ronald L. Steiner
A Commentary On The Old Saw That Same-Sex Marriage Threatens Civilization, Ronald L. Steiner
Ronald L. Steiner
Discussions of same-sex marriage frequently entertain the notion that civilization is somehow at stake were a society to award legal sanction to it, and to gay rights more generally. Typically, those who express concern for negative civilizational consequences have in mind Western civilization, and more specifically Christian civilization. This civilizational concern will often be amplified by the implication that opposite-sex, or opposite-sex monogamous marriage is a timeless human universal. Any other marital regime is presumed to be an aberration, most likely the result of grave moral depravity of a sort supposedly facilitated by the modern rights-based society. This chapter subjects …

The Role Of Cultural Attributes In Inequality And Poverty, Leon Zolotoy, Miki Malul, Amir Shoham
Leon Zolotoy
This paper uses cross country data to explore the role of cultural attributes in inequality of income distribution and poverty within countries. Using the Hofstede cultural dimensions, we found that individualism is negatively correlated with the Gini index and poverty ratio. We also found that the lower the status of women in a society, the higher the level of poverty in that society. Furthermore, we found that combing the cultural variables in the analysis significantly improves its ability to explain the differences in inequality and poverty in different countries.

• Rapid Knowledge: ‘Bridging Research And Policy’ In International Development At The Overseas Development Institute, Diane L. Stone

Numerous organizations advocate the need to ‘bridge research and policy’. Donors such as philanthropic foundations, national social science funding regimes and international organizations have sought to improve knowledge utilization. Similarly, research consumers such as NGOs and government departments complain of research irrelevance for policy purposes. The concern of this paper is with ‘evidence informed policy’ within the field of international development in which the Overseas Development Institute (ODI), a London based think tank, forms the case study. Think tanks are important brokers in processes of ‘bridging research and policy’. Most think tanks are driven by the need to influence immediate …

Shaping Success Among Black Males In An Hbcu: A Study Of Barriers And Benefits, Robert T. Palmer, T. Elon Dancy
Robert T. Palmer, PhD
Attrition for Black men is a serious problem in higher education. While researchers have explored factors of retention for Black men attending predominantly White institutions (PWIs), less research explains factors underlying the success of Black men attending historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), particularly those men who are academically unprepared. Eleven Black men, who entered a public, urban HBCU through its pre-college program and persisted to graduation, indicated that their social networks play a vital role in facilitating retention and persistence. The results from this study are transferable to other HBCUs which seek to enhance retention among Black male collegians.

Pittsburghese Shirts: Commodification And The Enregisterment Of An Urban Dialect, Barbara Johnstone
Barbara Johnstone
This article considers a type of material artifact that circulates ideas about regional speech in the United States: T-shirts bearing words and phrases thought to be unique to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I argue that Pittsburghese shirts, seen for themselves and in the context of their production, distribution, and consumption, are part of a process leading to the creation and focusing of the idea that there is a Pittsburgh dialect. To describe how particular locally hearable forms have become linked with the city, I invoke Asif Agha’s concept of “enregisterment.” To understand why this has happened at the time and in the …
