After adopting a federated search product and featuring it prominently on the library's Web site in 2006, Booth Library greatly reduced the visibility of the product in 2008 due to poor performance and lower than expected use. This session provides evidence from actual practice on the use of federated searching.

Psychology Faculty Publications

A multisample, multistudy project aimed at understanding how individual differences in narcissism during early adolescence are related to distortions in the aggression, and the reactivity of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis to negative and positive experiences. The findings indicate that individual differences in narcissism are a remarkably stable aspect of personality during early adolescence. It is predictably related to an inflated view of the self that is not warranted by objective indices of social functioning. Further evidence shows that it promotes the continuity of aggressive behavior and is more strongly related to reactive aggression than to proactive aggression and more strongly related …

It was a sensitive time — the day before China’s 60th birthday — and I found myself stuck inside the gates of the city’s oldest diplomatic compound, where many foreign newspapers and television stations now have their offices.

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

Suicide is a complex problem linked to genetic, environmental, psychological and community factors. For the Aboriginal population more specifically, loss of culture, history of traumatic events, individual, family and community factors may also play a role in suicidal behaviour. Of particular concern is the high rate of suicide among Canadian Aboriginal youth. While the need to develop interventions to reduce suicidal behaviour for First Nations on-reserve populations is evident, there may be an element of distrust of researchers by Aboriginal communities. Furthermore, research in mental health and specifically suicide is much more sensitive than studying medical illnesses like diabetes. Clearly, …

Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative

This policy research brief examines the Medicaid eligibility expansions under the pending legislative proposals, including the House Tri-Committee bill, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee bill and the Senate Finance Committee bill. Using new Census Bureau data, the researchers find that under both the House and Senate Finance Committee proposals, about 9.6 million nonelderly adults would gain Medicaid eligibility by 2014. Furthermore, the federal and state expenditures are less than Medicaid's positive impact on the economy amounting in a return of three dollars in new business activities for every dollar of state Medicaid investment.
