The following section highlights the presidency of two institutions of higher learning in the Western United States, Gonzaga University and Whitworth College. Robert Spitzer, SJ. of Gonzaga and Bill Robinson of Whitworth have developed a lasting friendship with one another, unique in that one is president of a Catholic university, the other president of a Protestant college. Considered by many to be servant-leaders with effective and very different approaches, the two presidents have become crucial developers of their respective communities. Under their leadership Gonzaga and Whitworth continue to receive national acclaim.

Robert Greenleaf believed the best leadership results from a desire to serve others (Greenleaf, 1991). Servant-leaders approach others with humble spirits, seeking to serve rather than to be served. In his essay The Servant as Leader, Greenleaf (1991) asserted, "Not everything that is old and worn, or even corrupt, can be thrown away. Some of it has to be rebuilt and used again. So it is with the words serve and lead" (p. 1). For that reason, the message of the "leader-as-servant" (Greenleaf, 1998, p. 4) exemplifies the spirit of faith-based correctional volunteers. In a world of hard-to-predict, rapid change, leaders must understand the complexity of our social and natural world of variations, need for mutual interactive discussion, and process of selection for effective leadership. According to Axelrod and Cohen (2000), it is hard to predict situations in Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS), which means a "world where many players are all adapting to each other and where the emerging future is extremely hard to predict" (p. xi). Albert Einstein once said that a problem could never be solved at the same level of consciousness that created it. Yet, great difficulty may lie in shifting from an old to a new paradigm. The road ahead will be difficult, but the course is clear: a new paradigm is needed to bring human efforts to higher levels of synergy: the metaphor of transcendent leadership. Transcendent leadership provides a revolutionary frame of viewing human interaction in organizational settings. And as David Suzuki said of human interactions: "Solutions are in our nature."

Hendricks, Jr., an accomplished biblical scholar, began this analysis of the political dimension of Jesus with a description of his frustration with his early education, when he was taught about only the meek and otherworldly Christ, the "long-suffering Jesus who was concerned with the things of heaven, with little thought for the matters of this world, matters like social injustice, racial and gender inequities, or the systematic oppression of the poor" (p. 3). In the age of uncertainty, theological libraries must change from information gatekeepers on academic islands of the past to a culture that is fundamentally collaborative. We librarians can no longer rely on our own expertise stuck in what we have formerly known, with the concept that we have all the answers. Therefore, people need to treat people as people and not as tools to complete a task. People see themselves instead as a collaborator in the great endeavor of librarianship. Even though change is inevitable, the future is always unknown and that is what makes it exciting.

Consumer Decision Making And Aging: Current Knowledge And Future Directions, Carolyn Yoon, Catherine A. Cole, Michelle P. Lee

We review existing knowledge about older consumers and decision making. We develop a conceptual framework that incorporates the notion of fit between individual characteristics, task demands and the contextual environment. When the fit is high, older consumers use their considerable knowledge and experience to compensate for the impact of any age-related changes in abilities and resources. When the fit is relatively low, older consumers feel increased need to adapt their decision making processes. We discuss these consumer adaptations and propose a number of research questions related to the processes underlying them in order to contribute to a better understanding of …

Studies conducted in previous decades have examined attitudes toward and perceptions of voluntarily childless men and women. Participants in these studies were usually comprised of high school, college, and university students. The results showed that, compared to those who were parents, voluntarily childless men and women were mostly perceived in a less favorable light. This study sought to investigate how voluntarily childless heterosexual couples are currently viewed and whether attitudes toward the voluntarily childless have changed since the earlier research was conducted. Though this work is a fuel and energy history of Kansas City from 1820 to 1920, it also provides a tool to describe and analyze fuel and energy transitions. The four parts follow the rise and fall of wood, coal and oil as their use grows to a peak and, in the case of wood, declines. The founding and growth of Kansas City as an “instant city” that grew from zero population to over three hundred twenty thousand in a hundred years embodies the increased use of fuels and energy in an urban setting and serves as a case study. …

April 28, 2009 — Advertising students from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications took home first place in the District 9 American Advertising Federation's National Student Advertising Competition April 24. A first for the program, this win places the team among an elite group of 15 from across the country that will compete for the national title in Washington, D.C., June 4-5. UNL will represent District 9, which includes Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and Kansas. In this paper, we investigate whether listed firms in China adjust their capital structure in response to an increase in the corporate taxrate. Although theories of capital structure suggest that corporate tax is an important determinant of capital structure, how exogenouschanges of the tax rate affect firms’ leverage decisions has not been fully explored. We examine a unique circumstance in which the Chinesegovernment increased the corporate tax rate of firms that had previously received local government tax rebates. The evidence indicatesthat these firms increased their leverage when the corporate tax rate increased. Further investigation suggests that the adjustment ofleverage was …
