How Virtualized Environments Affect Computer Forensics, Diane Barrett Apr 2008

How Virtualized Environments Affect Computer Forensics, Diane Barrett

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Virtualized environments can make forensics investigation more difficult. Technological advances in virtualization tools essentially make removable media a PC that can be carried around in a pocket or around a neck. Running operating systems and applications this way leaves very little trace on the host system. This paper will explore all the newest methods for virtualized environments and the implications they have on the world of forensics. It will begin by describing and differentiating between software and hardware virtualization. It will then move on to explain the various methods used for server and desktop virtualization. Next, it will describe the …

The Virtual Digital Forensics Lab - Expanding Law Enforcement Capabilities, Mark Mccoy, Sean A. Ensz

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Law enforcement is attempting to respond to the growing and complex need to examine all manner of digital evidence using stand-alone forensic workstations and limited storage solutions. Digital forensic investigators often find their cases stalled by cumbersome and inflexible technology limiting their effectiveness. The Virtual Digital Forensics Lab (VDFL) is a new concept that applies existing enterprise host, storage, and network virtualization technologies to current forensic investigative methods. This paper details the concept of the VDFL, the technology solutions it employs, and the flexibility it provides for digital forensic investigators.

Digital Forensic Certification Versus Forensic Science Certification, Nena Lim Apr 2008

Digital Forensic Certification Versus Forensic Science Certification, Nena Lim

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Companies often rely on certifications to select appropriate individuals in disciplines such as accounting and engineering. The general public also tends to have confidence in a professional who has some kinds of certification because certification implies a standard of excellence and that the individual has expert knowledge in a specific discipline. An interesting question to the digital forensic community is: How is a digital forensic certification compared to a forensic science certification? The objective of this paper is to compare the requirements of a digital forensic certification to those of a forensic science certification. Results of the comparison shed lights …

The Rules Of The Road Or Roadblocks On The Information Highway? Regulation And Innovation In Telecommunications, James Prieger, Daniel Heil Apr 2008

The Rules Of The Road Or Roadblocks On The Information Highway? Regulation And Innovation In Telecommunications, James Prieger, Daniel Heil

School of Public Policy Working Papers

Regulatory policy in telecommunications must balance short-term efficiency (low prices) against the firms’ incentives to innovate, which have longer reaching impacts on economic welfare. Historically, policy tended to sacrifice dynamic efficiency for the sake of competitive prices and static efficiency. In the last few decades, economists and other researchers have begun to document the large welfare costs of ignoring dynamic efficiency. We analyze the impact regulation has on innovation in a simple theoretical framework. We then turn to the empirical evidence that regulation dampens firms’ incentive to innovate in the telecommunications industry in general and the market for broadband Internet …

Discovering The Library: Finding The Hidden Barriers To Success Using The Catalog, Ellen Safley

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Over the past two years, the Catalog Committee at the University of Texas at Dallas used a verbal protocol analysis to research how students use the catalog system to find known items, to locate materials on a subject, and to evaluate the design and appearance of the interface. The research is attempting to evaluate the thought process and effectiveness of how students use the catalog system. The Library is conducting its third session to evaluate the changes made in the discovery process. During these sessions, the Library will incorporate a means to collect both the audio portion of the person’s …

Self-Discovery Through Digital Portfolios: A Holistic Approach To Developing New Library And Information Professionals, Gillian Hallam

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Library educators face ever-increasing challenges in terms of delivering a curriculum that will adequately prepare students for the dynamic digital environment they will be working in. Graduates require a balance of discipline specific knowledge and personal attributes that will enable them to transition smoothly into employment and plan their future careers. At Queensland University of Technology (QUT) the postgraduate library and information management program has introduced a whole-of-course approach to professional practice studies, using an ePortfolio to support the students on their learning journey.

The subject ITN280 Professional Practice has been developed as an overarching unit in the Master of …

Tulib: Interactive Learning And Discovery Of Information Literacy Skills Using Web 2.0 Features, Karin Clavel, Thecla Ettema

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

TUlib is TU Delft’s new online information literacy website. Its main features are a tag cloud search to allow easy navigation through the website, a modular design, interactive tutorials and the use of social bookmarking. The tag cloud is based on a custom thesaurus and is powered by the Collexis search engine. Tag cloud searches are being used in many of the popular web 2.0 web services, such as Flickr and YouTube. They seem to work well for this website, giving a good overview of what the information literacy website has to offer. During the development process, a lot of …

Enticing The Google Generation: Web 2.0, Social Networking And University Students, Philip G. Kent Apr 2008

Enticing The Google Generation: Web 2.0, Social Networking And University Students, Philip G. Kent

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Much has been written about Gen X, Y and Google Generation students in the higher education sector. Student-centred approaches, new pedagogies, a focus on quality management, information and learning commons initiatives all evidence greater attention to the generational needs of the Google Generation. New technologies and applications have also been harnessed to meet students in their ‘own space’.

Traditional library systems are being enhanced to include Web 2.0 functionality. Universities and their Libraries are establishing a presence in social network sites (eg Facebook, YouTube).

The paper analyses these trends, takes stock of these initiatives in the university library environment and …

Humint Or Webint? Concept Study On Possible Routes For Improving Knowledge Discovery Within Organizations, Nader Naghshineh Apr 2008

Humint Or Webint? Concept Study On Possible Routes For Improving Knowledge Discovery Within Organizations, Nader Naghshineh

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The history of science is replete with instances of constant sociological and economic challenges posed by technical breakthroughs. On the other hand one could equally argue that it had been the sociological factors fomenting such breakthroughs. Both interpretations lead to the same effect, the increased complexity of the information sphere confronting us everyday. A number of researchers such as Shannon have argued an entropic effect for information. Some psychologist have suggested that our history from the standpoint of information dexterity could be interpreted by the degree of interaction of individual intelligence with collective intelligence as represented by institutions –such as …

Wiretapping: A Necessity For Effectively Combating Terrorism In The 21st Century, Michael A. Hewitt Apr 2008

Wiretapping: A Necessity For Effectively Combating Terrorism In The 21st Century, Michael A. Hewitt

Senior Honors Theses

Abstract In 2001, the Patriot Act was passed to provide new tools to combat terrorism. Chief among these new tools is the intelligence gathering method known as wiretapping. The role of wiretapping in the Patriot Act, particularly the constitutionality of this method, includes what criteria must be met to preserve constitutionally protected civil liberties. Wiretapping has had a significant effect as a facet of the Patriot Act on both the personal security and privacy of the American people. Current wiretapping policy lacks clear and appropriate guidelines addressing the modern terrorist threat. Future policy should reflect the need for new criteria …
