Expert Witness Testimony In Jury Verdicts When Battered Women Kill, Asma Sheikh Apr 2008

Expert Witness Testimony In Jury Verdicts When Battered Women Kill, Asma Sheikh

Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this investigation were to (a) explore the relationship between jury verdicts when traumatic brain injury expert testimony is provided and (b) examine the relationship between the verdicts when battered women syndrome expert witness testimony is provided, in Rowan University undergraduate students (N = 100). Students were provided with experimental packets, read a mock legal case, answered four questionnaires, and conducted a mock jury deliberation. Students indicated their verdicts were of lesser severity when there was traumatic brain injury expert witness testimony when compared to battered women syndrome expert witness testimony. Analysis of variance statistics indicated that expert …

Internet Addiction And Social Satisfaction, Michael Attanasio Apr 2008

Internet Addiction And Social Satisfaction, Michael Attanasio

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of Internet addiction on a participant's level of satisfaction with their social life. Participants were gathered from both Rowan University and the Internet at large (n = 122) and asked to complete an online survey. The survey contained criteria questions for Internet addiction and social satisfaction as well as numerous questions that determined the effects of the participant's Internet usage on various aspects of their life (social, academic, job performance, etc). Results show that knowing a participant's level of Internet addiction allows researchers to weakly predict their level of satisfaction …

Climate Change And Student Behavior: Recommendations For The University Of Richmond, Claire Calise, Geoff Cox, Jennifer Fitts, Francisco Hazera, Kim Huson, Sam Pugsley, Blake Ramsby, Mariela Rich, Kellen Seligman, Naoum Tavantzis, Christine Wrublesky

Environmental Studies Senior Seminar Projects

We, the Environmental Studies Senior Seminar Class of 2008, choose to recognize climate change as an imminent threat. After rigorous examination of the scientific, social, and political aspects of climate change, we initially wanted to help construct the carbon emissions inventory required in the PCC. However, citing their ability to build the inventory through existing University institutions, our administration steered us towards the Scope 3 emissions inventory, a component which focuses on student behavior. While we found Scope 3 too limiting, we decided our goal as a class was to impact student climate change awareness on campus. Therefore, we separated …

Market Efficiency : Testing Price Discovery In The Bond And Credit Derivative Markets, Justin M. Polselli Apr 2008

Market Efficiency : Testing Price Discovery In The Bond And Credit Derivative Markets, Justin M. Polselli

Honors Theses

Recent developments in credit markets over the past few months have seen credit spreads widen dramatically for a range of debt products. Almost overnight, credit spreads for both investment grade and high yield bonds jumped as news continued to worsen about credit quality. The speed with which credit spreads increased this past summer led many investors to ask if markets were efficient in conveying material information, and to see if there were any indications prior to the credit crunch that the market for credit was going to tighten. New products such as credit derivatives have increased the number of indicators …

Growing Up Han: Reflections On A Xinjiang Childhood, Timothy B. Weston Apr 2008

Growing Up Han: Reflections On A Xinjiang Childhood, Timothy B. Weston

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

The US media rarely covers the regular people who are living in the areas of China with large ethnic minorities. In chatting with a Han Chinese student (Han Chinese are by far the largest ethnic group in China) at the University of Colorado named Leong, I was struck by his nuanced perspective on his experiences growing up in Xinjiang, a province in western China with large populations of Hui (ethnically Chinese Muslims), Uighers (Turkic Muslims), and other ethnic minorities. Given the recent discussions in the Western media—in light of the situation in Tibet—of Chinese policies toward ethnic minorities, I thought …

Ddasaccident695, Hd-Aid

Global CWD Repository

The primary and secondary cause of this accident are listed as a Unavoidable because the deminer suffered no apparent injuries, and accidental initiations can occur when excavating mines even when all precautions are taken. Dust in the eyes is common after a blast because dust is drawn into the low-pressure area behind the expanding blast wave. “Grid” in the eyes causes greater concern because it may have been ejecta from the blast, implying that the visor was not worn correctly but it is presumed that the Victim had no injuries because the investigators accepted that this was so.

Follow The Bouncing Torch

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

It can become numbing to try to keep up with all the stories about the torch and keep track of where exactly it has been and is going next. Still, it remains fascinating to see how the response to it have varied from place to place. Plus there are some intriguing locales such as Pyongyang are on the horizon. Fortunately, for those who want a quick visual reminder of what’s happened so far, as well as a guide to where the flame is headed, there’s a handy interactive map in the Financial Times.

The Cyber-Workplace – Identifying Liability Issues In The Information Age And Managing E-Risk, Nigel Wilson Apr 2008

The Cyber-Workplace – Identifying Liability Issues In The Information Age And Managing E-Risk, Nigel Wilson

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The information age provides numerous opportunities for modern society but also presents significant challenges in identifying liability issues and in managing risk. Technological change has occurred rapidly and is continuing at the same time as other major trends and changes are taking place in society and, in particular, in the workplace. The prospect of global liability and the complexity of jurisdictional differences present a considerable hurdle to the uniform regulation of liability issues. General legislation and legal principles have been readily applied to the cyber-world and to modern business practices and the workplace. Where necessary, legislatures have introduced specific legislation …

Documenting Community History, Linda Reynolds

Bright Ideas Conference

Historically archives and museums have sought out collections to keep in their institution. Many members of the community are not ready to donate their cherished family heirlooms to a museum or archive. The East Texas Research Center (ETRC) at Ralph W. Steen Library views collecting material in a different light. They are helping to preserve and disseminate Texas cultural heritage through the promotion of preservation of Community Collections. ETRC temporarily borrows material from the community or members of the community bring their historic material to be digitized and added to the TIDES database.

Data Mining Techniques For Fraud Detection, Rekha Bhowmik Apr 2008

Data Mining Techniques For Fraud Detection, Rekha Bhowmik

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The paper presents application of data mining techniques to fraud analysis. We present some classification and prediction data mining techniques which we consider important to handle fraud detection. There exist a number of data mining algorithms and we present statistics-based algorithm, decision tree-based algorithm and rule-based algorithm. We present Bayesian classification model to detect fraud in automobile insurance. Naïve Bayesian visualization is selected to analyze and interpret the classifier predictions. We illustrate how ROC curves can be deployed for model assessment in order to provide a more intuitive analysis of the models.

Simple - Rethinking The Monolithic Approach To Digital Forensic Software, Craig Valli

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

This paper outlines a collaborative project nearing completion between the sec.au Security Research Group at Edith Cowan University and Western Australian Police Computer Crime Squad. The primary goal of this project is to create a software tool for use by non-technical law enforcement officers during the initial investigation and assessment of an electronic crime scene. This tool will be designed as an initial response tool, to quickly and easily find, view and export any relevant files stored on a computer, establishing if further expert investigation of that computer is warranted. When fully developed, the tool will allow investigators unprecedented real …

Sistem Anggaran Rumah Sakit Yang Berorientasi Kinerja Untuk Meningkatkan Kualitas Keuangan Publik, Wahyu Sulistiadi

Kesmas

Modeling Eating Pathology: The Role Of Gender, Sociocultural, And Individual Factors, Lindsay T. King Apr 2008

Modeling Eating Pathology: The Role Of Gender, Sociocultural, And Individual Factors, Lindsay T. King

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Eating pathology is an increasing problem in the United States and other Western countries. This study examined gender differences and specific known psychological correlates of eating pathology. Sociocultural variables, such as thin-ideal internalization, and individual factors, such as perfectionism and experiential avoidance, were also evaluated. A sample of 257 female and 165 male undergraduates (n = 423) completed a battery of surveys online. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to model the relationships among the variables. The results show that the best fitting model included perfectionism rather than thin-ideal internalization leading to body dissatisfaction. There is support for experiential …

Giving Process Its Due : Can Collaboration Help Environmental Markets Succeed?, John Robert Cochran Apr 2008

Giving Process Its Due : Can Collaboration Help Environmental Markets Succeed?, John Robert Cochran

Dissertations and Theses

Emerging environmental markets assign economic value to ecosystem services and exchange them in market-like transactions. These markets are characterized by diverse stakeholder interests interacting with minimally defined transaction steps and high uncertainty. In this context, process plays an important role in shaping the institutions that make markets work or fail. If process matters, then market organizers need to intentionally craft processes just as they intentionally design institutions. This project explores a subset of four relatively established water quality trading programs that involved diverse stakeholders, and used differing forms of collaboration to design institutions. This research tests whether sometimes subtle changes …

Attitudes And Practices Of Clergy Members In Rural And Urban Areas, Susan Dutcher Apr 2008

Attitudes And Practices Of Clergy Members In Rural And Urban Areas, Susan Dutcher

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

As mental health professionals become increasingly aware of the importance of religious values to clients there should be attempts not only to incorporate religion therapeutically but also to develop effective alliances with religious experts, in particular, members of the clergy. Since clergy are often on the frontlines of mental health issues, further research regarding referral patterns and collaboration is necessary. Clergy may be especially important in mental health care for rural communities where there is often a lack of adequate mental health resources and limited education surrounding mental health problems. The purpose of this study encompassed several different objectives. First, …
