An Investigation Of Determinism And Chaotic Behavior In Flight Performance Data: A Chaos Theory And Nonlinear Time Series Analysis Approach, Lionel Blankson Amanfu
An Investigation Of Determinism And Chaotic Behavior In Flight Performance Data: A Chaos Theory And Nonlinear Time Series Analysis Approach, Lionel Blankson Amanfu
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
Human flight performance data were investigated using non-linear time series analysis methods to determine deterministic chaotic behavior in the data. Using a sequence of steps of non-linear methods, four flight performance data were used to investigate for the existence of deterministic chaotic behavior. Results revealed that flight performance data may exhibit chaotic behavior. Results also showed a consistent low determinism value in all the data examined which is the defining characteristic of chaotic behavior. It was also found that the data originated from non-stationary process. The Maximal Lyapunov Exponent (MLE) value which indicate chaotic behavior exist in the data revealed …
Comparing The Impact Of Bullying And Sexual Harassment Victimization On The Mental And Physical Health Of Adolescents, James Gruber Phd, Susan Fineran Phd, Licsw
Comparing The Impact Of Bullying And Sexual Harassment Victimization On The Mental And Physical Health Of Adolescents, James Gruber Phd, Susan Fineran Phd, Licsw
School of Social Work
A sample of 522 middle and high school students from a school district in a northeastern state in the U.S. was used to address two questions about bullying and sexual harassment: Is one more frequent than the other, and are there gender or sexual orientation differences in this regard? And, does one have greater adverse health effects than the other, and, if so, for whom? Bullying occurred more frequently than sexual harassment for both girls and boys but not among sexual minorities. Girls were bullied or harassed as frequently as boys, but sexual minorities experienced higher levels of both. Compared …

Effects Of Item Presentation And User Flexibility On Rater Perceptions, Ryan Edward Phillips
Psychology Theses - Archive
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of item presentation and user flexibility on performance ratings and rater perceptions of the performance rating process. The participants were 252 undergraduate students enrolled in one or more psychology courses at the University of Texas at Arlington. Participants rated the performance of their psychology instructor using four different rating formats: (a) Multiple-item presentation, high user-flexibility, (b) Multiple-item presentation, low user-flexibility, (c) Single-item presentation, high user-flexibility, and (d) Single-item presentation, low user-flexibility. Dependent measures were administered within each performance rating format to obtain ratings of (a) instructor performance, (b) rater confidence …
Septal Stimulation Inhibits Spinal Cord Dorsal Horn Neuronal Activity, Christopher E. Hagains
Septal Stimulation Inhibits Spinal Cord Dorsal Horn Neuronal Activity, Christopher E. Hagains
Psychology Theses - Archive
Deep Brain Stimulation is a useful technique for relieving chronic pain in patients that have exhausted their options. The septum has been a target for such treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine if electrical stimulation in the medial septum diagonal band of broca (MSDB) would reduce nociceptive neuronal activity in the spinal cord of rats. This interest was addressed using a Grass Stimulator to stimulate the MSDB on one side of the brain while recording mostly wide dynamic range neurons in the lumbar region of the spinal cord. Neuronal activity was initiated by graded mechanical stimulation of …
Equine Assisted Therapy And Exercise With Eating Disorders: A Retrospective Chart Reveiw And Mixed Method Analysis, Carolyn Boyd Lutter
Equine Assisted Therapy And Exercise With Eating Disorders: A Retrospective Chart Reveiw And Mixed Method Analysis, Carolyn Boyd Lutter
Social Work Theses - Archive
Eating disorders are a group of devastating mental illnesses that chronically affect millions of young women and men of all ages and ethnicities in industrialized nations. Mainstream treatment approaches thus far have proven to have variable efficacy and outcomes and new behavioral interventions such as equine assisted therapy and exercise deserve to be considered as a viable intervention with this population. The area of equine assisted therapy in the field of eating disorder research has received disproportionately little attention. Given the number of residential treatment facilities that integrate it into their treatment for eating disorders, evidence of its safety and …
The Mechnism Of Cbt For Depression Recovery: The Role Of Problem-Solving Appraisal, Szu-Yu Chen
The Mechnism Of Cbt For Depression Recovery: The Role Of Problem-Solving Appraisal, Szu-Yu Chen
Social Work Dissertations - Archive
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is among the most extensively tested psychotherapies for depression. Although its effect on depression alleviation has been widely recognized, little is known regarding its therapeutic mechanism on depression alleviation. Among empirical explanations about the mechanism of CBT, the cognitive mediation hypothesis has historically dominated the field. Although findings of prior studies support this hypothesis by showing a correlation between cognitive changes and depression changes, there is still an absence of sufficient evidence to support that patients' depression improvements are caused by their cognitive changes. In recent years, several studies further observed that patients' depression was improved …
Family Resilience As A Predictor Of Better Adjustment Among International Adoptees, Toby Buchanan
Family Resilience As A Predictor Of Better Adjustment Among International Adoptees, Toby Buchanan
Social Work Dissertations - Archive
The purpose of this study was to explore the role of family resilience theory in relation to the healthy adjustment of transnationally adopted children. The research was guided by two research questions: 1). What is the relationship between family resilience and the overall adjustment of children adopted from outside of the United States? 2). What family resilience variables are most highly predictive of better adjusted and not as well adjusted adoptees? The investigation also included two research hypotheses: 1). Significant differences exist between families of international adoptees that are better adjusted and those that are not as well adjusted. 2). …

Reconstructing Sovereignty: From Control To Responsibility, Eric K. Leonard
Reconstructing Sovereignty: From Control To Responsibility, Eric K. Leonard
Human Rights & Human Welfare
As I stood with a standing-room only crowd last fall at a United Nations University of New York (UNU-ONY) event entitled, "Prevention of Mass Atrocities: From Mandate to Realization," I began to wonder how far the responsibility to protect (R2P) could be stretched. As defined by the UNU-ONY organizers, the purpose of the event was " to explore the work of mass atrocity prevention across the UN system, with a focus on the role of the new Office of the Special Representative for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities (SRPGMA)." As I currently look at the international community's response …
Introducing Learning Commons Functionality Into A Traditional Reference Setting, Jeffrey A. Franks
Introducing Learning Commons Functionality Into A Traditional Reference Setting, Jeffrey A. Franks
E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)
Abstract
For the past decade the University Libraries at The University of Akron has been modifying and enhancing its services in response to changing technologies and user needs, as well as evolving campus strategies. Library efforts centered on service excellence and student success have played a leading role in the inclusion of a planned learning commons as one of the key strategic initiatives of the University. At this time the learning commons concept has been fully developed, while the proposed building renovation plan is underway. The Library, however, is utilizing key opportunities in the present to integrate learning commons functionality …
Library 2.0 And The Problem Of Hate Speech, Margaret Brown-Sica, Jeffrey Beall
Library 2.0 And The Problem Of Hate Speech, Margaret Brown-Sica, Jeffrey Beall
E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)
[First paragraph]
Library 2.0 applications benefit library users by providing rich, peer-generated content that adds value to online library databases and systems. However, not all of this shared content is beneficial, for it’s possible for library users to abuse library 2.0 applications by uploading words, pictures, or other content that constitutes hate speech. Internet lawyer Christopher Wolf warns of, “ … the sudden and rapidly increasing deployment of Web 2.0 technologies to spread messages, sounds and images of hate across the Internet and around the world” [1]. As academic libraries make available Web 2.0 systems that allow user-generated content, they …

Rural Public Access And The Americans With Disabilities Act: Measuring Progress In Hamilton, Montana, Tom Seekins Ph.D., Catherine Ipsen, University Of Montana Rural Institute
Rural Public Access And The Americans With Disabilities Act: Measuring Progress In Hamilton, Montana, Tom Seekins Ph.D., Catherine Ipsen, University Of Montana Rural Institute
Independent Living and Community Participation
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 is arguably the most significant single effort to enhance community participation of people with disabilities (Brown, 2001), in part by promoting physical access to public places and commercial facilities. Specifically, ADA Titles II and III provide disability advocates with legal tools for promoting access to public places. Despite the significance of the ADA legislation, Batavia (1992) points out that the ADA was “passed without documentation of need” and that “no baseline data exist to assess the implementation of the ADA.” Historically, advocates have monitored the implementation and outcomes of the ADA by …
Review Of One West, Two Myths Ii: Essays On Comparison Edited By C. L. Higham And Robert Thacker, Molly Rozum
Review Of One West, Two Myths Ii: Essays On Comparison Edited By C. L. Higham And Robert Thacker, Molly Rozum
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
With this collection, editors C. L. Higham and Robert Thacker aim to define the parameters and potential of the Canada-U.S. comparative Wests field of study, with particular reference to its myths. The American Review of Canadian Studies (winter 2003) originally published the main body of essays, but this republication has important additions. New appendices include Frederick Jackson Turner's 1893 essay on "The Significance of the Frontier in American History" and J. M. S. Careless's 1954 essay on "Frontierism, Metropolitanism, and Canadian History." Both are useful for understanding what R. Douglas Frances in a separate essay states as the persistent "difficulty …
Review Of Ballots And Bullets: The Bloody County Seat Wars Of Kansas By Robert K. Dearment, Christopher Lovett
Review Of Ballots And Bullets: The Bloody County Seat Wars Of Kansas By Robert K. Dearment, Christopher Lovett
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Kansas's long and distinguished history often has been soaked in the blood of border ruffians, abolitionists, and common criminals. In many respects Kansas is a land of extremes, and a review of the county seat wars in the late nineteenth century dramatizes that point. Robert DeArment, a respected western historian, has examined the violence in western Kansas during the effort to organize the state's western counties in the 1880s. The heart of the matter, according to DeArment, was a problem universally evident during the Gilded Age: uncontrollable greed and the desire to make a financial killing. In Kansas, the speculators …
Review Of What Becomes You. By Aaron Raz Link And Hilda Raz, Gayle Salamon
Review Of What Becomes You. By Aaron Raz Link And Hilda Raz, Gayle Salamon
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
What Becomes You is one book of two stories. The first is the memoir of Aaron Raz Link, a transsexual man raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, who describes his journey through trans life and queer kinship. Trained as a scientist, Link has a sharp eye for detail and offers keen descriptions of gender transition, even as he inverts many of its stereotypes. He describes the process of coming out to friends and family as watching them undergo a "sex change": a sudden reordering of their perceptions once they realize he is a man rather than a woman-and has been all along. …
Review Of The Rise And Fall Of Indian Country, 1825-1855 By William E. Unrau., Roger Nichols
Review Of The Rise And Fall Of Indian Country, 1825-1855 By William E. Unrau., Roger Nichols
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This slender volume lays out the story of the creation, evolution, and demise of the mid-nineteenth- century region known as "Indian Country." An amorphous and frequently changing area located in the Plains, one might posit that it existed more on paper than on the ground. The author traces four legal actions underlying the creation of such a region: the Royal Proclamation of 1763, the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, the 1830 Indian Removal Act, and the 1834 Indian Trade and Intercourse Act. The latter guaranteed the tribes' rights to their land beyond the Mississippi forever. As Unrau's analysis demonstrates, the contrast between …
Review Of True Tales Of The Prairies And Plains By David Dary, Benjamin T. Arrington
Review Of True Tales Of The Prairies And Plains By David Dary, Benjamin T. Arrington
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The cover of True Tales of the Prairies and Plains notes that author David Dary is a past winner of the Cowboy Hall of Fame Award and the Western Writers of America Spur Award. One must assume that his previous books made better contributions to the scholarship of the American West than does this one. Fine for a casual reader or one interested in entertaining vignettes about the West, this work has little to offer the serious scholar.
The book is broken into several sections with such titles as "Over the Trails and Rails," "Buried Treasure Legends" (so much for …
Review Of A Great Restlessness: The Life And Politics Of Dorise Nielsen By Faith Johnston, Valerie Korinek
Review Of A Great Restlessness: The Life And Politics Of Dorise Nielsen By Faith Johnston, Valerie Korinek
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
For years, we've known little about Dorise Nielsen, other than the curious fact that she holds the distinction of being the first federally elected communist in Canada. What, one wonders, caused a prairie farm wife and mother to run successfully as the United Progressive candidate for North Battleford, Saskatchewan, in 1940? The answers are multifaceted according to Faith Johnston's award-winning biography. Partly, Johnston attributes Nielsen's motivation to culture shock at her transformation from a middle-class urban English existence to the isolation, poverty, and deprivation of life on a central Saskatchewan farm during the Depression. Secondly, and equally significantly, Nielsen's personality, …
Review Of Hot Coffee And Cold Truth: Living And Writing The West. Edited By W. C. Jameson, David Mogen
Review Of Hot Coffee And Cold Truth: Living And Writing The West. Edited By W. C. Jameson, David Mogen
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
As the title suggests, this collection of essays on "Living and Writing the West" is conversational and engaging, sometimes brash and humorous. Editor W. C. Jameson arranges the different voices of twelve popular authors on Western subjects, and the result is indeed like listening in on the thoughts and reminiscences of seasoned writers over a hot cup of coffee on a chilly morning. For aspiring writers and general readers alike, this anthology presents an eclectic array of opinions and stories about the distinctive challenges presented to those who write about "the West."
Jameson introduces his vision of the book by …
Review Of To Remain An Indian: Lessons In Democracy From A Century Of Native American Education By K. Tsianina Lomawaima And Teresa L. Mccarty, Ruth Spack
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
As they trace the shifts in United States government Indian policy over the course of a century, K. Tsianina Lomawaima and Teresa L. McCarty develop a theoretical framework they label "the safety zone" as a way to explain the continuing conflict over the issue of cultural difference in educational settings. Drawing on extensive archival material, the authors illustrate convincingly how educational policies and practices have reflected the federal government's attempt to make a distinction between "safe" and "dangerous" Indigenous beliefs and practices.
Using Western cultural norms as the standard against which to measure Indigenous ways of being, the government might, …
Review Of Black Gun, Silver Star: The Life And Legend Of Frontier Marshal Bass Reeves. By Art T. Burton, Amy E. Carreiro
Review Of Black Gun, Silver Star: The Life And Legend Of Frontier Marshal Bass Reeves. By Art T. Burton, Amy E. Carreiro
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Art T. Burton's study of African American lawman Bass Reeves contributes to the growing body of work on the black experience in the West. Burton does a fine job of sorting through the fact and fiction surrounding the marshal's career. Although an engaging character, a fulllength study of the marshal did not exist until now. Burton's Black Gun, Silver Star provides insight into the place of race in the Southern Plains in the late 1800s. Burton argues that the significant number of black federal law enforcement agents in Indian Territory "was truly unusual in American history."
Reeves's "accomplishments are all …
Review Of Art Of The Cherokee: Prehistory To The Present By Susan C. Power, Mary Jo Watson
Review Of Art Of The Cherokee: Prehistory To The Present By Susan C. Power, Mary Jo Watson
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Native American art history concerning Southeastern and Oklahoma Indian art is enhanced by Susan Power's ambitious book on Cherokee art. Its wide historic and artistic focus spans from the sixteenth century through transitional phases including European contact, removal, revival, and contemporary art. Power locates the Cherokees within the older Mississippian mound culture throughout the Tennessee Valley and North Carolina and provides examples of early sites where surviving pottery, beads, gorgets, rattles, painting, weaving, and sculpture indicate an interest in both utility and aesthetics. Early Cherokee arts demonstrate concern with color, form, design, patterns, and symbolism; and there is evidence that …
Shaping Nebraska An Analysis Of Railroad And Land Sales, 1870-1880, Kurt E. Kinbacher, William G. Thomas Iii
Shaping Nebraska An Analysis Of Railroad And Land Sales, 1870-1880, Kurt E. Kinbacher, William G. Thomas Iii
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
On December 23, 1878, Ohio resident D. F. Vanniss wrote to George P. Cather, the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad's land agent in Red Cloud, Nebraska. He asked Cather to buy for him "the best 160 acres of R. R. Land in your county," and just to be clear he emphasized, "I want it before somebody else gets it." Cather received many such breathless letters, urgent, pleading, and intense inquiries about the lands the railroad had for sale. Nearly all wanted to know the position of the allimportant railroad. Almost all inquired about the availability of the all-important resource: water. …
Editor's Note- Summer 2008
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
EDITOR'S NOTE
In May 2007, the Center for Great Plains Studies held their 33rd Interdisciplinary Symposium. The topic was Homesteading Reconsidered. Chaired by Homestead National Monument Historian Todd Arrington, and organized by the staff of the Center, the conference examined homesteading and its legacy from many angles: reviewing recent and forthcoming scholarship, probing conflicting interpretations, and covering differing perspectives on the historical and ecological significance of homesteading. Competitive papers and invited presentations examined such diverse topics as: Native American views of homesteading; federal land policies in the U.S. and Canada; ecological impact on the natural environment of the Great Plains; …
