Review Of Everett Baker's Saskatchewan: Portraits Of An Era. Selected By Bill Waiser, Patrick C. Douaud
Review Of Everett Baker's Saskatchewan: Portraits Of An Era. Selected By Bill Waiser, Patrick C. Douaud
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The photographs that Everett Baker (1893- 1981) took in Saskatchewan from the 1940s to the 1960s cover just about one-half of the province, mostly the prairie part, at the northern end of the Great Plains. An American citizen, Baker was not drafted into World War I because of an asthmatic condition; after obtaining a BS degree he went to work in Saskatchewan in the hope that the dry climate would be better for his health. There he sold books and farmed in the Palliser Triangle, soon sharing with its rural population the hardships that accompanied the Great Depression. This was …
Review Of Blackfoot War Art: Pictographs Of The Reservation Period, 1880-2000 By L. James Dempsey, Gerald T. Conaty
Review Of Blackfoot War Art: Pictographs Of The Reservation Period, 1880-2000 By L. James Dempsey, Gerald T. Conaty
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Representational art depicting important historical events has always been integral to the lives of First Nations people. James Dempsey's Blackfoot War Art is concerned with the biographical art produced by the Blackfoot-speaking people, the original inhabitants of a vast territory that extended across the Plains of present-day southern Alberta, southern Saskatchewan, and most of Montana. Dempsey begins by situating this art within its cultural context, including a separate chapter on the importance of the "warrior ethic." He then goes on to discuss the art in terms of its artists' media.
Rock art is the oldest surviving example of Blackfoot art, …
Review Of The Texas Book: Profiles, History, And Reminiscences Of The University. Edited By Richard A. Holland, Dwonna Naomi Goldstone
Review Of The Texas Book: Profiles, History, And Reminiscences Of The University. Edited By Richard A. Holland, Dwonna Naomi Goldstone
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The Texas Book is an extensive-and exhaustive- collection of essays about the University of Texas at Austin in celebration of its hundredand- twenty-fifth anniversary. In his introduction, editor Richard Holland explains that the book is "not a beginning-to-end narrative history" but a selection of essays whose purpose is to "bring to life a handful of notables who have walked the Forty Acres."
Opening with an essay on J. Frank Dobie, perhaps one of the foremost writers and speakers of Texas and the Southwest from the early 1900s until his death in 1964, the volume ends with two speeches by Barbara …
Land, Speculation, And Manipulation On The Pecos, Stephen Bogener
Land, Speculation, And Manipulation On The Pecos, Stephen Bogener
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The Pecos River of the nineteenth century, unlike its faint twenty-first century shadow, was a formidable watercourse. The river stretches some 755 miles, from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains northeast of Santa Fe to its eventual merger with the Rio Grande. Control over the public domain of southeastern New Mexico came from controlling access to the Pecos, its tributaries and springs. In the arid environment of New Mexico's Pecos Valley, corporate accumulation of land through manipulation of federal land laws followed the removal of Native Americans, the displacement of Mexican American communities, and the departure of major players in the …
Review Of Identity By Design: Tradition, Change, And Celebration In Native Women's Dresses Edited By Emil Her Many Horses, Emma Hansen
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The National Museum of the American Indian published this book in conjunction with a 2007 exhibition of the same title. The book and the exhibition focus on women's dresses and related clothing and accessories from the North American Plains, Plateau, and Great Basin regions dating from the 1830s to the present, although the majority of the clothing and writing relates to the Plains.
After a foreword by then NMAI director W. Richard West Jr., exhibition curator and book editor Emil Her Many Horses provides an introductory chapter addressing the familial and spiritual significance of women's decorated dresses and describing basic …

Review Of American Indian Literary Nationalism By Jace Weaver, Craig S. Womack, And Robert Warrior., Terri Baker
Review Of American Indian Literary Nationalism By Jace Weaver, Craig S. Womack, And Robert Warrior., Terri Baker
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Scholars of the American Indian experience should read this book. These three authors discuss more issues in American Indian Studies and American Indian literary criticism than you can shake a stick at, and, get this-you won't even chip any teeth trying to pronounce the words, although you might want to have a dictionary handy. Simon Ortiz provides the foundation for the conversation in his foreword, and the appendix includes his 1981 essay "Toward a National Indian Literature." Lisa Brooks provides a thoughtful afterword.
Warrior urges critics to focus on research and finding the ways that have brought the Native world …
Review Of Searching For Sacred Ground: The Journey Of Chief Lawrence Hart, Mennonite By Raylene Hinz-Penner, Clyde Ellis
Review Of Searching For Sacred Ground: The Journey Of Chief Lawrence Hart, Mennonite By Raylene Hinz-Penner, Clyde Ellis
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In Oklahoma's Cheyenne community, Lawrence Hart has led a life framed by service and self-sacrifice. Widely regarded by his people as the embodiment of what a leader should be, Hart has spent decades tending to their cultural, spiritual, and political health. In Hinz-Penner's hands, Hart's biography is not simply his life story, but also a reflection of the shifting contours of contemporary Native life and a story that tells us much about what it means to be Cheyenne in the modern world. Writing with a keen appreciation for the larger issues at play in Hart's life, Hinz-Penner deftly broadens her …
Review Of Ruling Pine Ridge: Oglala Lakota Politics From The Ira To Wounded Knee By Akim D. Reinhardt, James V. Fenelon
Review Of Ruling Pine Ridge: Oglala Lakota Politics From The Ira To Wounded Knee By Akim D. Reinhardt, James V. Fenelon
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This well-documented book covers twentieth- century Pine Ridge politics by linking two events at Wounded Knee: the United States massacre of 1890 under cover of "war" on the Ghost Dance, and a 1973 American Indian Movement/ Traditionalist reoccupation and subsequent siege.
In explaining the dysfunctionality of the political economy on Pine Ridge, Reinhardt looks at the long-term effects of colonialism and its bureaucratic replacement in the Office of Indian Affairs (later renamed the Bureau of Indian Affairs), along with complicated divisions inculcated by government policies, often collectively known as internal colonialism. With astonishing detailed accuracy, he looks at the main …
Review Of Radical Hope: Ethics In The Face Of Cultural Devastation. By Jonathan Lear, Rodney Frey
Review Of Radical Hope: Ethics In The Face Of Cultural Devastation. By Jonathan Lear, Rodney Frey
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Jonathan Lear's Racial Hope is a most remarkable, engaging, and thought-provoking interpretation of one man's account of the collapse of his culture, as well as the hope he offers for a future for his people. Based on the life story of Plenty Coups (as recorded by Frank Linderman during the late 1920s), Lear considers two equally profound images offered by this Crow elder, one eng rained in the statement, "after this nothing happened," referring to what happened after being placed on a reservation, and the other in the medicine dreams of Plenty Coups in which the destruction of the Indian …
Review Of The Calgary Project: Urban Form/Urban Life. By Beverly A. Sandalack And Andrei Nicolai., Pierre Gauthier
Review Of The Calgary Project: Urban Form/Urban Life. By Beverly A. Sandalack And Andrei Nicolai., Pierre Gauthier
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The Calgary Project is an ambitious narrative. In eight chapters and two appendixes, the authors set about tracing the historical and spatial evolution of Calgary, aiming at drawing conclusions that could inform its planning in the future. The city's development is portrayed through five periods, unfolding from the establishment of a small North West Mounted Police Fort in 1875 to our times. Each period is featured in a chapter that opens with a discussion of the ideas, plans, and planning practices of the time, followed by a discussion of the "spatial structure" of the urbanized areas, and concludes with an …
Review Of Encyclopedia Of The Great Plains Indians Edited By David J. Wishart, James Sherow
Review Of Encyclopedia Of The Great Plains Indians Edited By David J. Wishart, James Sherow
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
While there is little new in this volume, scholars and students of the Great Plains, the American West, and, of course, of Indian peoples will find this a useful reference tool. Editor David J. Wishart, a noted author on subjects of the Great Plains, culled the entries on Indian peoples from the Encyclopedia of the Great Plains (2004), which he also edited.
The time span of this work reaches back to around 10,000 BP and takes readers up to the present. Wishart included a precise, succinct introduction by Philip Deloria and Christopher K. Riggs, excerpted from the Encyclopedia of the …
Why The Homesteading Data Are So Poor (And What Can Be Done About It), Richard Edwards
Why The Homesteading Data Are So Poor (And What Can Be Done About It), Richard Edwards
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Data available to scholars on homesteading are of very poor quality-inconsistent, unreliable, inaccessible, incomplete-and surprisingly, they haven't been getting any better. Even basic questions such as how much homesteaded land was "proved up," how much land was commuted, or how many actual farms were created by homesteading cannot be answered with any assurance. Moreover, the answers given today mostly depend on quantitative studies completed forty or more years ago.
Why should this be? After all, we have witnessed in recent decades a staggering increase in the capacity and convenience of data handling by using computers. The publication of the Historical …
Review Of Lewis And Clark Through Indian Eyes: Nine Indian Writers On The Legacy Of The Expedition Edited By Alvin M. Josephy Jr. With Marc Jaffe And Lewis And Clark And The Indian Country: The Native American Perspective Edited By Frederick E. Hoxie And Jay T. Nelson, Robert J. Miller
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
LEWIS AND CLARK: GONE; AMERICAN INDIANS: STILL HERE
The Meriwether Lewis and William Clark expedition is a well-known part of the history and lore of the United States. Its recent twohundred- year anniversary from 2003 to 2006 added greatly to popular interest in the expedition and to academic writing on Lewis and Clark.
Often asked during the bicentennial commemorations was the question of the expedition's actual importance. In fact, there has always been debate about the significance of Lewis and Clark in American history and to the ultimate expansion of the United States across the continent. In earlier times, the …

The Stress Of Caregiving: Factors Impacting Family Caregivers Following Entry Of The Care Recipient Into A Nursing Home, Rebecca Gean Judd
The Stress Of Caregiving: Factors Impacting Family Caregivers Following Entry Of The Care Recipient Into A Nursing Home, Rebecca Gean Judd
Social Work Dissertations - Archive
The purpose of this study was to identify stressors associated with family caregiving following entry into the nursing home of the care recipient. A cross-sectional, survey design included 129 family caregivers for care recipients located in sixteen long-term care facilities in north central Texas and Southern Oklahoma. Consistent with prior research stress related to the caregiving role did not end with the care recipient's entry into the nursing home. Multiple linear regression with forward entry indicated role captivity accounted for the majority of explained variance in perceived stress by family caregivers, followed by constriction of time for participating in family …
Performance Differences: A Comparison Between Computer-Based And Paper-Pencil Versions Of A Work Simulation Exercise, Cara L. Fay
Performance Differences: A Comparison Between Computer-Based And Paper-Pencil Versions Of A Work Simulation Exercise, Cara L. Fay
Psychology Theses - Archive
Organizations use Assessment Center methods for selection and development of employees. Many organizations that offer assessment services have already made the transition from paper-pencil to computer-based assessments with little research available to justify the appropriateness of this transition. This study examined the differences in performance on four versions of the same work simulation exercise (i.e., in-basket). The content of the work simulation was not altered from one version to another. The study sought to determine if performance on a work simulation exercise changed due to the form in which it was administered. This was tested using four conditions: Paper-pencil, Computer-based, …
Risk Factors For Functional Restoration Non-Completion, Krista J. Howard
Risk Factors For Functional Restoration Non-Completion, Krista J. Howard
Psychology Theses - Archive
Previous studies have shown that the one-year outcomes after an interdisciplinary functional restoration program for patients with chronic disabling occupational disorders vary significantly between those who complete the program and those who prematurely drop-out. Non-completers are 9.7 times less likely to return-to-work at any time, and are 7 times less likely to retain work at one year, relative to those who complete the program. Non-completers are also 7 times more likely to have post-rehabilitation surgery to the original injured area, while also displaying higher levels of healthcare utilization. The present study focuses on identifying the risk factors for non-completion of …
The Effects Of Narcissistic Group Identity And Group-Level Provocation On U.S. Citizens' Attitudes And Behavior Toward Arab Immigrants, Patricia A. Lyons
The Effects Of Narcissistic Group Identity And Group-Level Provocation On U.S. Citizens' Attitudes And Behavior Toward Arab Immigrants, Patricia A. Lyons
Psychology Theses - Archive
A measure of Narcissistic Group Identity was developed and tested in a cross-sectional pilot study of 319 university students. Analyses revealed that Narcissistic Group Identity predicted more negative attitudes toward Arab immigrants, compared to Asian, Latino, and European immigrant target groups. A subsequent laboratory study explored the hypotheses that Narcissistic Group Identity would again predict negative attitudes and behavior toward an Arab immigrant target group, and that a group-level provocation would exacerbate the effect. As expected, Narcissistic Group Identity predicted more negative attitudes and higher aggression toward an Arab target group, but did not predict attitudes or behavior toward Latino …
The Evolution Of Problem Solving: An Assessment Of Preference In Concurrent Schedules Of Reinforcement, Melissa Roark
The Evolution Of Problem Solving: An Assessment Of Preference In Concurrent Schedules Of Reinforcement, Melissa Roark
Psychology Dissertations - Archive
In personal problem-solving, an organism emits responses that have been useful in the past to alter its personal contingencies and produce a response that "solves" a problem. In verbal behavior, a human organism emits responses that have previously been useful to alter the contingencies of another human, this producing a response that "solves a problem". Additionally, in verbal behavior, an organism is controlled by its current contingencies rather than its history of reinforcement. It is suggested that personal problem-solving resembles a tandem schedule of reinforcement and that verbal behavior, which has evolved in humans, resembles multiple schedule reinforcement. This study …
Texas Homeland Security: Trust, Communication, And Effective Working Relationships Between Regional Coordinators And Local Respondents, Bobbie Brown
Political Science Theses - Archive
Policy implementation and intergovernmental relationships are most often examined from a federal/state perspective. This research, however, focuses on the effectiveness of working relationships between the two lower-levels of state government (i.e. regional and local jurisdictions) who implement homeland security policies in Texas. Using elite interviews conducted with the principal homeland security officials from the regional Councils of Governments and survey responses from chiefs of police across the state, this study seeks to identify what environmental, agency, and individual characteristics are associated with effective working relationships between these lower-levels of state government. Texas chose to integrate the implementation of its homeland …
A Contextual Analysis Of A Preclassic Problematic Deposit At Blackman Eddy, Belize, Rebecca Lynn Shelton
A Contextual Analysis Of A Preclassic Problematic Deposit At Blackman Eddy, Belize, Rebecca Lynn Shelton
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
This thesis examines Problematic Deposit #3 from two operations in Plaza B at Blackman Eddy, Belize through a detailed contextual analysis. Due to the ambiguous nature of problematic deposits, several methods of analysis were utilized to determine the event or events associated with the cultural material and the architectural remains uncovered in the two operations. For the analysis of the ceramic assemblage, the type-variety method was first utilized to determine the relative date of PD#3. Second, a functional analysis of the partial vessels within the problematic deposit was performed and a radiometric AMS date was collected from PD#3 of 380 …
The Acoustic Correlates Of Atr Harmony In Seven- And Nine-Vowel African Languages: A Phonetic Inquiry Into Phonological Structure, Coleen Grace Anderson Starwalt
The Acoustic Correlates Of Atr Harmony In Seven- And Nine-Vowel African Languages: A Phonetic Inquiry Into Phonological Structure, Coleen Grace Anderson Starwalt
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
This study compares eleven Niger-Congo languages with [ATR] harmony and seeks to determine especially whether the acoustic properties of the "voice quality" differences associated with [ATR] in nine-vowel languages, such as Akan, are present or absent in all, some or none of the seven-vowel languages. Of particular interest is the nature of the height 2 and 3 vowels of the nine- and degree 2 vowels of seven-vowel systems. First, this study corroborates previous work on nine-vowel systems by demonstrating that height 2 vowels [-ATR] [? ?] frequently overlap with height 3 vowels [+ATR] [e o]. Next, it considers the question …
X Is A Journey: Embodied Simulation In Metaphor Interpretation, L. David Ritchie
X Is A Journey: Embodied Simulation In Metaphor Interpretation, L. David Ritchie
Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations
This essay compares simulation-based accounts of metaphor processing recently proposed by Gibbs (2006a) and Ritchie (2006), using examples of metaphors based on the metaphor vehicle "journey" from four different texts. From analysis of these different examples, it is concluded that simulation may come into play at different levels, depending on the metaphor and the context in which it is used. Further, it is suggested that the imaginative simulation of the object or action named by a metaphor vehicle, proposed by Gibbs, incorporates a partial subset of detail-level perceptual simulators. This leads to the proposal that the two models describe cognitive …
Guidelines For Re-Establishing Grey Partridges Through Releasing, Francis Buner, N. J. Aebischer
Guidelines For Re-Establishing Grey Partridges Through Releasing, Francis Buner, N. J. Aebischer
Galliformes Specialist Group and Affiliated Societies: Reports and Other Materials
In the UK, numbers of grey partridges have declined by over 75% during the last 20 years, and in many parts of the country the species has become locally extinct. Concerns over the magnitude of the decline led the UK Government to place the species on the short list of the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) for which the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust was appointed lead partner in 1996. The Grey Partridge Species Action Plan’s targets are to restore numbers from 65,000 pairs in 2005 to 90,000 pairs nationally by 2010, and to expand its 1990 range. Over the …

The Body Beautiful: Jonathan Spence’S Final Reith Lecture, Xu Guoqi
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
Jonathan Spence gave his fourth and last Reith lecture on “The Body Beautiful.” This is a perfect fit for China’s Olympic year and a wonderful conclusion talk after his first lecture on mind (“Confucian Ways”), then on Chinese interactions with the former superpower (the second lecture “English Lessons”), and the current one (the third lecture “American Dreams”). From mind to body, from China as an ancient civilization through its turbulent relations with Western powers to a nation which is determined to compete with the world in hard power either economically or physically, the topic was extremely well thought. The lecture …
Our Women In China
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
Since late 2006, James Fallows has been providing regular coverage on China forThe Atlantic Monthly. His first piece for the magazine was subtitled “Our Man in Shanghai…” and the retro phrase caught our eye not only for its imperial overtones (the frequency with which it is used to describe newspaper reporters is unnerving, since the phrase calls up Graham Greene’s title, Our Man in Havana, a book about nothing so much as bad intelligence), but also for its gender implications. After all, “our man in China” is just as often a woman (as has been the case in the past; …

Energy Use And Concerns Of Rural Nebraskans, Rebecca J. Vogt, Randolph L. Cantrell, Miguel A. Carranza, Bruce Johnson, David J. Peters
Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)
Energy prices have steadily increased during the past year. Rural residents are now faced with higher costs to drive and heat and cool their homes. Given these conditions, how much of a problem have rising energy costs been for rural Nebraskans? What are their opinions on future energy sources? What changes have they made or do they plan to make due to the price increases? This paper provides a detailed analysis of these questions.
This report details 2,496 responses to the 2008 Nebraska Rural Poll, the thirteenth annual effort to understand rural Nebraskans’ perceptions. Respondents were asked a series of …
