Joane Miller, a resident of Redington Beach and widow of Parker E. Miller, donated the materials in this collection in two separate accessions. In early 1999, the library received a single bound notebook with individual documents signed by the first thirty-two Presidents of the United States (George Washington through Harry S. Truman). A subsequent accession in August 2000 included a collection of commemorative coins from the Franklin Mint that celebrates notable events in American history. Parker Everard Miller’s family maintained homes in Ohio and Florida. During the 1920s, members of the family often spent their winter months in St. Petersburg. …

Homophobia In Sport, Richard C. Crepeau
Homophobia In Sport, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
The last ten days or so has seen a convergence of seemingly unrelated events which illuminate or cast a dark shadow around the subject of gender and sport. The most high profile of these events was the announcement by former NBA player John Amaechi that he is gay, an announcement tied to the release of a book. As it turns out, the revelation is only one occurrence in a cluster of discreet moments related to the topic of gender and sport and sexuality, a subject that is seldom dealt with in a graceful manner in our society.
Capital Flight And Economic Performance, Edsel L. Beja Jr
Capital Flight And Economic Performance, Edsel L. Beja Jr
Economics Department Faculty Publications
Capital flight aggravates resource constraints and contributes to undermine longterm economic growth. Counterfactual calculations on the Philippines suggest that capital flight contributed to lower the quality of long-term economic growth. Sustained capital flight over three decades means that capital flight had a role for the Philippines to lose the opportunities to achieve economic takeoff. Unless decisive policy actions are taken up to address enduring capital flight and manage the macroeconomy more effectively, the Philippines remains caught in the perpetuity of crises, its economy hollowed-out, the people trapped in poverty, and once again, the country is frustrated from realizing a takeoff.
Fee Guilt: Examining Clinician Bias Against Pro Bono Patients, Darin L. Bergen
Fee Guilt: Examining Clinician Bias Against Pro Bono Patients, Darin L. Bergen
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Discussing pro bono therapy has not been a popular topic in psychology literature. What has been written from a theoretical perspective is generally opposed to the idea of free therapy. The few empirical studies regarding pro bono therapy suggest that the relationship between pro bono therapy and negative therapeutic outcome is not clear. In fact, it can be argued that the main negative dynamics in free therapy reside within the therapist, not the client. Thus, the purpose of this study was to understand the impact of a pro bono therapy request on therapists' diagnosis. Members of AP A Division 12 …

Love And Suffering In Bom Jesus: Marileia As Favela Woman And Mother, Marcia Mikulak
Love And Suffering In Bom Jesus: Marileia As Favela Woman And Mother, Marcia Mikulak
Anthropology Faculty Publications
This article explores the life history of Marileia, a favela woman and mother of five children, several of whom work the streets in Curvelo, Minas Gerais, Brazil, and is drawn from research carried out between 1997-2000 in Brazil. Ethnography exposes the multiple realities coexisting within and between individuals engaged in the constructionist process of fieldwork. From the anthropologists perspective, narrative is a translated and transcribed event that can magnify inequalities and barriers between researcher and subject. This article explores ethnographic representation by extending the cantankerous and complex experiences of researcher, subject, and reader into a form similar to a musical …

Controlling Family Shareholders In Developing Countries: Anchoring Relational Exchange, Ronald J. Gilson
Controlling Family Shareholders In Developing Countries: Anchoring Relational Exchange, Ronald J. Gilson
ExpressO
The Law and Finance account of the ubiquity of controlling shareholders in developing markets is based on conditions in the capital market: poor shareholder protection law prevents controlling shareholders from parting with control out of fear of exploitation by a new controlling shareholder who acquires a controlling position in the market. This explanation, however, does not address why we observe any minority shareholders in such markets, or why controlling shareholders in developing markets are most often family-based. This paper looks at the impact of “bad law” on shareholder distribution in a very different way. Developing countries typically provide not only …

Attrition Bias, Richard B. Miller, Cody S. Hollist
Attrition Bias, Richard B. Miller, Cody S. Hollist
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Attrition bias is one of the major threats to multiwave studies, and it can bias the sample in two ways. First, attrition bias can affect the external validity of the study. If some groups of people drop out of the study more frequently than others, the subsequent longitudinal sample no longer resembles the original sample in the study. As a result, the remaining sample is not generalizable to the original population that was sampled. For example, a longitudinal sample examining the grieving process of women following the death of a spouse may fail to retain those participants who have become …
