Plasticity In Animal Personality Traits: Does Prior Experience Alter The Degree Of Boldness?, Ashley J. Frost, Alexandra Winrow-Giffen, Paul J. Ashley, Lynne U. Sneddon

Ethology Collection

Theoreticians predict that animal ‘personality’ traits may be maladaptive if fixed throughout different contexts, so the present study aimed to test whether these traits are fixed or plastic. Rainbow trout (Onchorhyncus mykiss) were given emboldening or negative experiences in the forms of watching bold or shy individuals responding to novelty or winning or losing fights to examine whether prior experience affected boldness. Bold individuals that lost fights or watched shy demonstrators became more shy by increasing their latency to approach a novel object, whereas shy observers that watched bold demonstrators remained cautious and did not modify their responses to novelty. …

Farm Business Succession And Estate Planning Or “What You Need To Know Before You Go To See The Attorney”, David J. Goeller

Cornhusker Economics

Nearly everyone agrees that it is important to plan for the future. Why, then, do less than half of all farmers and ranchers have an estate plan? Many will say it is just too complicated so it gets put off until…well, later or maybe never. Farm and ranch estate planning can involve some rather complicated concepts. Attorneys and other estate planning professionals spend a lifetime honing their skills and evaluating various estate planning options. Should a trust or a will be used? What about a corporation or an LLC? Should we have a durable power of attorney and an advanced …

Culture War: The Battle For Portland's Lair Hill Neighborhood, 1968, James Tucker Jackson

Dissertations and Theses

The youth explosion of the mid-1960s that spawned the hippie counterculture also bred fear among older Americans, many of whom viewed the cultural dissenters as immoral, deviant, and criminal. Some in the ranks of government shared this view and felt duty-bound to oppose the counterculture. This thesis examines one example of a municipal government and the series of policies it pursued to address the threat of a "hippie invasion" into the Lair Hill neighborhood in Portland, Oregon in 1968. The central question will be to determine whether these policies were enacted in pursuit of the stated goals of improved public …

Two Sides Of The Same Coin? The Differing Roles Of Assets And Consumer Debt In Marriage, Jeffrey P. Dew Feb 2007

Two Sides Of The Same Coin? The Differing Roles Of Assets And Consumer Debt In Marriage, Jeffrey P. Dew

Faculty Publications

This study examines whether assets and consumer debts relate to change in marital satisfaction and conflict in opposing ways or in independent ways. It also tests whether these relationships are direct or mediated. Using a nationally representative longitudinal sample, the results indicate that assets and consumer debt influence change in marital outcomes in mostly independent rather than complementary ways. Consistent with prior literature, assets work indirectly by decreasing feelings of economic pressure. Consumer debt, however, directly predicts changes in marital conflict, even after controlling for variables in the family stress model. Debts also act indirectly by decreasing depression once economic …
