Writing A Children‟S Book, Andrea Fabiano

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

This project contains the components and procedures for writing a children‟s book, as the first in its series. The story is of a child at a birthday party who puts on a baseball cap. He then morphs into a pitcher of a baseball team on the brink of getting into the playoffs. This project has the timeline and the steps that it took to get to the end result, which was the first draft of the first book in the series. The series has a central theme. In each book, a child will put on a hat, and then transform …

A Program To Increase Creative Consciousness Through Drawing, Craig P. Puffer May 2006

A Program To Increase Creative Consciousness Through Drawing, Craig P. Puffer

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

This project assumes that in the development of many children between the ages of five and eleven, a link exists between three observable phenomena: (1) the collapse of their ability to learn on their own; (2) the collapse of their creative abilities; and (3) the collapse of their willingness and ability to draw. Our society holds artists up as exemplars of creativity, and many adults seem to accept the following logical progression: (a) artists are creative; (b) artists can draw; (c) I can’t draw; (d) therefore, I’m no artist; and therefore, (e) I’m not very creative. However, as quadriplegics can …

Differences In Perception Of Indiana Public School Superintendents As To The Reason For Adoption Of A Particular School Improvement Model, Earl G. Williams

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

School accountability is of paramount importance today in education. The pressure for accountability comes from both state and national levels. Improving student performance has become a top p1io1ity for the school superintendent who searches for the most productive model with the most effective strategics for improving student achievement. The purpose of this study was to detennine the differences in perception of Indiana public school superintendents as to the reason for their school districts adoption of a particular school improvement model. The Indiana Department of Education recognizes four improvement models. Indiana schools districts have the choice to choose which model they …

Semantic Analytics Visualization, Leonidas Deligiannidis, Amit P. Sheth, Boanerges Aleman-Meza May 2006

Semantic Analytics Visualization, Leonidas Deligiannidis, Amit P. Sheth, Boanerges Aleman-Meza

Kno.e.sis Publications

In this paper we present a new tool for semantic analytics through 3D visualization called “Semantic Analytics Visualization” (SAV). It has the capability for visualizing ontologies and meta-data including annotated web-documents, images, and digital media such as audio and video clips in a synthetic three-dimensional semi-immersive environment. More importantly, SAV supports visual semantic analytics, whereby an analyst can interactively investigate complex relationships between heterogeneous information. The tool is built using Virtual Reality technology which makes SAV a highly interactive system. The backend of SAV consists of a Semantic Analytics system that supports query processing and semantic association discovery. Using a …

Therapeutic Processes In A Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment For Depressed Adolescents With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Meredith Brent May 2006

Therapeutic Processes In A Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment For Depressed Adolescents With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Meredith Brent

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Youth with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have higher rates of depression than healthy youth. A cognitive-behavioral treatment, primary and secondary control enhancement training-physical illness (PASCET-PI), for depressed adolescents with IBD was associated with reductions in depressive symptoms. The purpose of this study was to examine the salience of nonspecific processes (factors inherent in any human relationship) and specific processes (factors related to therapy content) during PASCET-PI sessions and their association with improvements in psychological functioning.

Participants included 10 adolescent patients with IBD with mean illness duration of 31.9 months. At intake, eight participants qualified for a diagnosis of major depressive …

Effects Of The Diagnostic Label "Adhd " On Peer Judgment, Jared Toone May 2006

Effects Of The Diagnostic Label "Adhd " On Peer Judgment, Jared Toone

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Diagnostic labels are frequently used with children exhibiting symptoms of learning and behavioral disorders. The effect that such labels have on the labeled children as well as their peers is not completely understood. In the present study, the effects of the label "ADHD" on peer acceptance were examined. Fourth- and fifth-grade boys and girls viewed a video of a peer listening to teacher instruction and working on a worksheet. For half of the participants, the child in the video was labeled as having ADHD, while the other participants were told nothing about the child. After viewing the video, the children …

Social Interactions And Bullying In Withdrawn Children: An Evaluation Of Generalization Strategies Within A Social Skills Training Intervention, Kyle Max Hancock May 2006

Social Interactions And Bullying In Withdrawn Children: An Evaluation Of Generalization Strategies Within A Social Skills Training Intervention, Kyle Max Hancock

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Socially withdrawn children are at increased risk for various maladaptive outcomes. One intervention suggested to mediate these outcomes is the use of peermediated social skills training. However, little research supports its use with socially withdrawn children; even less research has investigated the role of peer mediators in the generalization of treatment effects. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a generalization training package on the generalization of socially withdrawn students and their peer mediators' interactions. This study compared the effectiveness of various procedures in a peer-mediated intervention on the generalization of prosocial interactions with socially withdrawn students and examined …

Conjoint Behavioral Consultation: Application To The School-Based Treatment Of Anxiety Disorders, Elana R. Bernstein, Thomas R. Kratochwill, Kelly A. Feeney-Kettler

Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications

In the current paper we discuss the treatment of childhood anxiety disorders using a problem-solving consultation framework. The role of consultation as a service delivery model in a school setting is elaborated on, as well as the contribution that consultation has in the movement towards evidence-based practices in school psychology. Additionally, a description of the role of consultation specifically in the treatment of childhood anxiety is provided. The role of parents and teachers in treatment is further elucidated, and the separate influence each may have on traditional treatment outcomes is presented. Finally, we discuss the benefits of using a conjoint …

Open Access And Conscious Selection, Kitti Canepi, Andrea Imre, Harold Way May 2006

Open Access And Conscious Selection, Kitti Canepi, Andrea Imre, Harold Way

Conference Papers and Presentations

Open Access resources (OA) are becoming more important in all types of libraries. Recent discussions on OA have focused on ILS access and availability of MARC records with little attention to a selection process for deciding whether or not to provide access to OA.

The presenters will outline some of the concerns with by-passing conscious selection, show how some services and systems are providing bibliographic access, offer information collected on the availability of finding aids for a group of OA titles, present selection criteria used by some database aggregators that include OA resources, and suggest possible selection process models.

Robust Implementation In Direct Mechanisms, Dirk Bergemann, Stephen Morris May 2006

Robust Implementation In Direct Mechanisms, Dirk Bergemann, Stephen Morris

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

A social choice function is robustly implementable if there is a mechanism under which the process of iteratively eliminating strictly dominated messages leads to outcomes that agree with the social choice function for all beliefs at every type profile. In an interdependent value environment with single crossing preferences, we identify a contraction property on the preferences which together with strict ex post incentive compatibility is sufficient to guarantee robust implementation in the direct mechanism. Strict ex post incentive compatibility and the contraction property are also necessary for robust implementation in any mechanism, including indirect ones. The contraction property requires that …

Optimal Electoral Timing: Exercise Wisely And You May Live Longer, Jussi Keppo, Lones Smith, Dmitry Davydov May 2006

Optimal Electoral Timing: Exercise Wisely And You May Live Longer, Jussi Keppo, Lones Smith, Dmitry Davydov

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In many democratic countries, the timing of elections is flexible. We explore this potentially valuable option using insights from option pricing in finance. The paper offers three main contributions on this problem. First, we derive a rationally-based mean-reverting political support process for the parties, assuming that politically heterogeneous voters continuously learn over time about evolving party fortunes. We solve for the long-run density for this process and derive the polling process from it by adding polling noise. Second, we explore optimal timing using the political support process. The incumbent sees its poll support, and must call an election within five …

Travel And Transit Use At Portland Area Transit-Oriented Developments (Tods), Jennifer Dill May 2006

Travel And Transit Use At Portland Area Transit-Oriented Developments (Tods), Jennifer Dill

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

In recent years there has been a growing interest in using land use planning to reduce reliance on the automobile long-term, through ideas such as smart growth, New Urbanism, pedestrian pockets, and transit-oriented development (TODs). Many growing regions throughout the United States, are turning to these concepts to address problems of traffic congestion and suburban sprawl. However, the effectiveness of such policies in reducing automobile travel and improving livability is largely unknown. Portland was one of the early adopters and is often pointed to as a model for other regions. The Region's 2040 Growth Concept, adopted by the Metro regional …

The Stench Of Death And The Aromas Of Life: The Poetics Of Ways Of Knowing And Sensory Process Among Piaroa Of The Orinoco Basin, Joanna Overing May 2006

The Stench Of Death And The Aromas Of Life: The Poetics Of Ways Of Knowing And Sensory Process Among Piaroa Of The Orinoco Basin, Joanna Overing

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

The Piaroa are people, living along tributaries of the middle Orinoco, who recognize that the dance of every bodily process participates in a poisonous, primordial design of things. This paper explores the relation of sensory processes and the cosmic to Piaroa ways of knowing and doing their arts of the culinary. In so doing it is an expedition into ethnopoetics. My focus is upon the interplay of two contrasting narrative genres—the sublime and grotesque realism—as used by shamanic chanters to unfold the manifold ways in which bodily processes and sensory life are intimately involved in ways of knowing. The imagery …

Laughing At Power And The Power Of Laughing In Cashinahua Narrative And Performance, Elsje Lagrou May 2006

Laughing At Power And The Power Of Laughing In Cashinahua Narrative And Performance, Elsje Lagrou

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

The grotesque humor of pantomime and myth, the festive humor of play, and the humor used to criticize excesses in myth and comic sketches, can all be read as modes of native knowledge of the world and of the relationships holding this world together. Native exegesis of humorous imagery reveals crucial values related to Cashinahua concepts about sociality and ritual agency. These are iconic discourses about the quality of relations between people and between people and the animated world. The humor of the grotesque body, which is composed of parts of the body acting as autonomous forces, and the festive …

From One To Metaphor: Toward An Understanding Of Pa’Ikwené (Palikur) Mathematics, Alan Passes May 2006

From One To Metaphor: Toward An Understanding Of Pa’Ikwené (Palikur) Mathematics, Alan Passes

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This article addresses an aspect of Pa’ikwené knowledge called púkúha, which means both “to understand” and “to count.” It explores the indigenous numerology and the close relationship,no less imaginative than empirical, between mathematics and linguistics that is not always apparent in non-oral societies such as ours. The Pa’ikwené mathematical system is conceptually inventive and lexically profuse, some numerals having over two hundred different forms in current usage thanks to an intensive, affix-based process of morphemic transformations. Thereby, a number word can belong to twenty-one numerical classes relating to five distinct semantic categories incorporating diverse discrete states or qualities (male/female, concrete/abstract, …

Bororo Funerals: Images Of The Refacement Of The World, Sylvia Caiuby Novaes May 2006

Bororo Funerals: Images Of The Refacement Of The World, Sylvia Caiuby Novaes

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

In this article I analyze Bororo funerals as moments of defacement and refacement. Death triggers a series of transformations that involve the dead person, the corpse itself, the soul, the making of the deceased’s representative, and the relationships among the living. All these transformations—which are the object of public secrecy—take place during the various rituals that compose the funerary cycle. The text is accompanied by a selection of photographs taken during thirty years of field research among the Bororo Indians of Mato Grosso, Brazil, in order to illustrate Bororo funerals as moments of re-creation of the world, following the theoretical …

Instrumental Speeches, Morality, And Masculine Agency Among Muinane People (Colombian Amazon), Carlos David Londono Sulkin May 2006

Instrumental Speeches, Morality, And Masculine Agency Among Muinane People (Colombian Amazon), Carlos David Londono Sulkin

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Individuals among People of the Center (Colombian Amazon) produced numerous discursive depictions of themselves and of others, regarding their own competence and morality and others’ lacks thereof. Here, I attend particularly to a set of portrayals that pertained mostly to men: those concerning forms of knowledge that each People of the Center deemed uniquely their own. Individuals stressed the great amount of knowledge they possessed, the propriety of their processes of acquisition and the legitimacy of their use of it, its effectiveness and authentically patrilineal character, and the respect and fear others had of them because of it. They also …

The Triumph And Sorrow Of Beauty: Comparing The Recursive, Contrapuntal, And Cellular Aesthetics Of Being, George Mentore May 2006

The Triumph And Sorrow Of Beauty: Comparing The Recursive, Contrapuntal, And Cellular Aesthetics Of Being, George Mentore

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

The principal assumption put forward in this paper will be that for the Waiwai the privileging of lateral visibility brings ideas about a fractal individual into association with recursive power, while for coastal Guyanese and U.S. societies, respectively, the privileging of axial visibility brings concepts about an autonomous individual into association with contrapuntal and cellular relations of power. It will be argued that, contrary to the Waiwai situation, in its agenda to achieve a greater efficiency for the workings of its political relations with its citizens, the desire of the modern state, expressed through its privileged use of axial visibility, …

The Effect On Type I Error And Power Of Various Methods Of Resolving Ties For Six Distribution-Free Tests Of Location, Bruce R. Fay May 2006

The Effect On Type I Error And Power Of Various Methods Of Resolving Ties For Six Distribution-Free Tests Of Location, Bruce R. Fay

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The impact on Type I error robustness and power for nine different methods of resolving ties was assessed for six distribution-free statistics with four empirical data sets using Monte Carlo techniques. These statistics share an underlying assumption of population continuity such that samples are assumed to have no equal data values (no zero difference–scores, no tied ranks). The best results across all tests and combinations of simulation parameters were obtained by randomly resolving ties, although there were exceptions. The method of dropping ties and reducing the sample size performed poorly.

Nonparametric Bayesian Multiple Comparisons For Dependence Parameter In Bivariate Exponential Populations, M. Masoom Ali, J. S. Cho, Munni Begum May 2006

Nonparametric Bayesian Multiple Comparisons For Dependence Parameter In Bivariate Exponential Populations, M. Masoom Ali, J. S. Cho, Munni Begum

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A nonparametric Bayesian multiple comparisons problem (MCP) for dependence parameters in I bivariate exponential populations is studied. A simple method for pairwise comparisons of these parameters is also suggested. The methodology by Gopalan and Berry (1998) is extended using Dirichlet process priors, applied in the form of baseline prior and likelihood combination to provide the comparisons. Computation of the posterior probabilities of all possible hypotheses are carried out through a Markov Chain Monte Carlo, Gibbs sampling, due to the intractability of analytic evaluation. The process of MCP for the dependent parameters of bivariate exponential populations is illustrated with a numerical …

Entropy Criterion In Logistic Regression And Shapley Value Of Predictors, Stan Lipovetsky May 2006

Entropy Criterion In Logistic Regression And Shapley Value Of Predictors, Stan Lipovetsky

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Entropy criterion is used for constructing a binary response regression model with a logistic link. This approach yields a logistic model with coefficients proportional to the coefficients of linear regression. Based on this property, the Shapley value estimation of predictors’ contribution is applied for obtaining robust coefficients of the linear aggregate adjusted to the logistic model. This procedure produces a logistic regression with interpretable coefficients robust to multicollinearity. Numerical results demonstrate theoretical and practical advantages of the entropy-logistic regression.
