Comparison Of Some Simple Estimators Of The Lognormal Parameters Based On Censored Samples, Baklizi Ayman, Mohammed Al-Haj Ebrahem
Comparison Of Some Simple Estimators Of The Lognormal Parameters Based On Censored Samples, Baklizi Ayman, Mohammed Al-Haj Ebrahem
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Point estimation of the parameters of the lognormal distribution with censored data is considered. The often employed maximum likelihood estimator does not exist in closed form and iterative methods that require very good starting points are needed. In this article, some techniques of finding closed form estimators to this situation are presented and extended. An extensive simulation study is carried out to investigate and compare the performance of these techniques. The results show that some of them are highly efficient as compared with the maximum likelihood estimator.

On Body And Soul, Guilherme Werlang
On Body And Soul, Guilherme Werlang
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
The notions of “body”and “soul,” within the dual universe of the Marubo from southwestern Amazonia, intersect other contributions to this volume: first, in view of the present concern, from a universalizing perspective, on epistemological issues in Amazonia; and second, in view of a now ever-present relevance of indigenous ontology (here more as the “presentation,” rather than the “investigation” or “account” of the origins of the cosmos and all forms of being therein) vis-à-vis the knowledge, with a particularizing tenor, of the performance of a cognitive ethos.

“The Effectiveness Of Symbols” Revisited: Ayoreo Curing Songs, John Renshaw
“The Effectiveness Of Symbols” Revisited: Ayoreo Curing Songs, John Renshaw
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
This essay considers a specific field of Amerindian knowledge, namely the sarode, or curing songs, of the Ayoreo of the Gran Chaco. It attempts to elucidate some of the taken-for-granted metaphysical assumptions that underlie Ayoreo epistemology. Following the approach taken in Joanna Overing’s introduction to Reason and Morality (1985), I will suggest that even these apparently simple, repetitive curing songs have to be understood as part of a broader corpus of “mythical” knowledge. They acquire their effectiveness or power, not through suggestion or metaphor but rather by harnessing the power of the “mythical” world of the jnani bajade, the …
Language Acquisition And Cognitive Development, Veronica Regueiro
Language Acquisition And Cognitive Development, Veronica Regueiro
Whittier Scholars Program
Language is one of the attributes which set human beings apart from all other creatures. Although it can be argued that some animals , such as apes, exhibit a kind of language, the “language” used by animals and the thought of animals stem from different roots and also develop along different lines. The way animals think is in no way related to their language. Animal language functions apart from animal intellect. His project focuses on the relationship between language acquisition and cognitive development. It analyzes and cohesively explains the research done in the field, and any progress made in determining …
Bias In Severe Thunderstorm And Tornado Warnings Issued By The National Weather Service In The Doppler Radar Era: A Spatial-Temporal Evaluation, Gary S. Votaw
Theses and Dissertations
A climatology of severe thunderstorm (damaging wind and/or hail) and tornadoes in the United States has established the location of the areas of highest frequency of occurrence. This climatology was attained through analysis of a basic data source, that of observed events, which carries many associated biases. Among these biases is the requirement that someone be on hand to witness the event no matter what time of the day or night, the assumption that the observer had sufficient visibility to see the event clearly, and whether there was something available on location to damage. In this study I use an …
The Day Of Silence: A Day Of Silent Protest For Glbt Issues Awareness At Uri, Danielle Towne
The Day Of Silence: A Day Of Silent Protest For Glbt Issues Awareness At Uri, Danielle Towne
Senior Honors Projects
The Day of Silence is a day of silent protest for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender equal rights and treatment in schools. It has been in action annually since 1996 when students at the University of West Virginia decided to take action into their own creative hands. Now, 450,000 students from kindergarten to college spend their day in silence together. This hardly makes holding this program at the University of Rhode Island an original concept. However, for a school who has never observed such a day before and a school with a lack of GLBT involvement, this day could be …

Conditional Love : A Study Of Situational Differences In Rooting For An Underdog, Sheila Margaret Hindle
Conditional Love : A Study Of Situational Differences In Rooting For An Underdog, Sheila Margaret Hindle
Master's Theses
While people tend to root unabashedly for underdogs in the domain of athletics, underdogs do not generally receive the same tremendous support in matters of business. This may occur for a variety of reasons, but of particular interest is the fact that an individual's perception of a situation as both self-relevant and of high consequences may prove detrimental to his or her willingness to support an underdog. Two studies were conducted to explore these hypotheses. Study 1 (N=48) required participants to read a brief scenario depicting a situation of varied self-relevance and consequences, and then select a company to complete …
Predictors Of Breast And Cervical Cancer Screening Among Vietnamese Immigrant Women, Anh B. Nguyen
Predictors Of Breast And Cervical Cancer Screening Among Vietnamese Immigrant Women, Anh B. Nguyen
Master's Theses
Predictors of breast and cervical cancer screening among Vietnamese immigrant women. Anh B. Nguyen, Master of Arts in Psychology, University of Richmond, 2006. Thesis director: Barbara K. Sholley, Ph.D Although practicing preventative healthcare is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, some high-risk populations do not engage in preventative screenings for cancer. Vietnamese American women constitute a high-risk group in gynecological cancers, and it was hypothesized that tenure, acculturation, health insurance, a regular source of care, education, employment status, and marital status would affect rates of cancer screening. It was also hypothesized that the Vietnamese population would have different trends …
Explorations Of Self: A Philosophical Inquiry, Meredith Rathbun
Explorations Of Self: A Philosophical Inquiry, Meredith Rathbun
Senior Honors Projects
Asking “Who am I?” seems to be something that everybody ponders. This concept of “I”—what is it? We all have an individual and unique “I”—something that has been with each of us since birth, something that has changed and grown, but also stayed the same in many ways. My question “What is The Self?” is imperative. What is it that experiences life, if not The Self? When a 99-year-old man watches his last sunset, reflecting on his life, what inside of him is doing that reflecting? As you read my ideas on this page, what inside of you is processing …
Examination Of The Issues And Scientific Evidence For The Identification Process Of Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Individuals With Learning Disabilities To Enhance Academic Outcomes, Scot Ferre
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Although the identification of learning disabilities (LD) is a viable means to provide appropriate
instructional and support services for students with academic difficulties, there is a limited
knowledge base about the identification, assessment, and intervention of and for LD in deaf and
hard of hearing (D/HH) students. Given the potential consequences of test results, this review
examined current and recent developments in the field of learning disabilities concerning the
conceptualization of learning disability and the validity and empirical support of earlier
identification methods and various assessment identification options with D/HH students.
Challenges to the process and the need for additional …

Teaching Graduate Trainees How To Manage Client Anger: A Comparison Of Three Types Of Training, Shirley A. Hess, Sarah Knox, Clara E. Hill
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
The authors examined the effects of three types of training (supervisor-facilitated training, self-training, biblio-training) on 62 graduate student therapists' state anxiety, self-efficacy for dealing with anger, and helping skills (i.e., reflections and immediacy) in response to videotaped vignettes of angry clients. Training overall was rated as very helpful, and trainees increased in self-efficacy for working with client anger. Supervisor-facilitated training was rated as more helpful than, and was preferred to, self-training and biblio-training; it also led to more reflection of feelings in response to clients. Results suggest that vignettes such as these might be a helpful adjunct to training once …

Properties Of The Gar(1) Model For Time Series Of Counts, Vasiliki Karioti, Chrys Caroni
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Models for time series count data include several proposed by Zeger and Qaqish (1988), subsequently generalized into the GARMA family. The GAR(1) model is examined in detail. The maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters will be discussed and the properties of Pearson and randomized residuals will be examined.
Variance Estimation And Construction Of Confidence Intervals For Gee Estimator, Shenghai Zhang, Mary E. Thompson
Variance Estimation And Construction Of Confidence Intervals For Gee Estimator, Shenghai Zhang, Mary E. Thompson
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The sandwich estimator, also known as the robust covariance matrix estimator, has achieved increasing use in the statistical literature as well as with the growing popularity of generalized estimating equations (GEE). A modified sandwich variance estimator is proposed, and its consistency and efficiency are studied. It is compared with other variance estimators, such as a model based estimator, the sandwich estimator and a corrected sandwich estimator. Confidence intervals for regression parameters based on these estimators are discussed. Simulation studies using clustered data to compare the performance of variance estimators are reported.

Jmasm22: A Convenient Way Of Generating Normal Random Variables Using Generalized Exponential Distribution, Debasis Kundu, Anubhav Manglick
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A convenient method to generate normal random variable using a generalized exponential distribution is proposed. The new method is compared with the other existing methods and it is observed that the proposed method is quite competitive with most of the existing methods in terms of the K − S distances and the corresponding p-values.

A Combined Individuals And Moving Range Control Chart, Michael B. C. Khoo, S. H. Quah, C. K. Ch'ng
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
An individuals control chart is usually used to monitor shifts in the process mean when it is not possible to form subgroups. The moving range of two successive process measures is used as the basis for estimating the process variability. Similar to the case of the X − R and X − S charts, the individualsmoving range (I-MR) charts are used simultaneously in the monitoring of the process mean and variance respectively for individual observations, requiring maintaining two different charts. In this article, a new approach is suggested where the measurements of both the process mean and variance are plotted …

A Combined Standard Deviation Based Data Clustering Algorithm, Kuttiannan Thangavel, Durairaj Ashok Kumar
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The clustering problem has been widely studied because it arises in many knowledge management oriented applications. It aims at identifying the distribution of patterns and intrinsic correlations in data sets by partitioning the data points into similarity clusters. Traditional clustering algorithms use distance functions to measure similarity centroid, which subside the influences of data points. Hence, in this article a novel non-distance based clustering algorithm is proposed which uses Combined Standard Deviation (CSD) as measure of similarity. The performance of CSD based K-means approach, called K-CSD clustering algorithm, is tested on synthetic data sets. It compared favorably to widely used …

The Use Of Hierarchical Ancova In Curriculum Studies, Show-Mann Liou, Chao-Ying Joanne Peng
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Many educational studies are carried out in intact settings, such as classrooms or groups in which individual data were collected before and after a treatment. Researchers advocate either the use of individual scores as the unit of analysis or class means. Both approaches suffer from conceptual and methodological limitations. In this article, the use of hierarchical ANCOVA for analyzing quasiexperimental data including baseline measures is designed and promoted. It is illustrated with a realworld data set collected from a curriculum study. Results showed that the hierarchical ANCOVA is a conceptually and methodologically sound approach, and is better than ANCOVA based …

Don't Ask Don't Tell And The Uri Community, Justin Thames
Senior Honors Projects
When Bill Clinton and his staff introduced the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Bill(US Code 10) it created quite a controversy. The bill was designed to replace the then current system of asking for an individual’s sexual orientation on a military application thus making homosexuality a barrier to service in the United States Armed Forces. The bill was finally passed in 1993 and is meant to keep people in power from discriminating on the basis of homosexuality. This new law requires that no investigations be launched to identify the sexual orientation of a service member nor will hearsay be allowed to …

Professional Ethics: Forensic Anthropology And Human Rights Work, Jana Webb
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Human rights forensic anthropology does not have an ethical code developed specifically for this field. Currently, forensic anthropologists look to ethical codes in different fields. These codes may offer differing opinions. They do not address the specific work and issues forensic anthropologists may encounter in the field. An analysis of existing ethical codes in anthropology and forensic science was done to show which areas of the code were applicable to human rights forensic anthropology. Areas that these codes needed to address were also demonstrated. It was found that there was an emphasis on honesty and responsibility. Professionals had responsibilities to …

I Am What I Wear: The Use Of Dress In Constructing And Evaluating Sexual Identity, Jean Stevens
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
This thesis explores different disciplinary studies and discussions of dress, and more specifically, the use of dress in constructing a gendered identity and sexual identity. To conduct this research, I performed a literature review and referenced various social psychological, sociological, and/or feminist theoretical frameworks. I argue that dress cannot serve as any sort of innate or accurate indicator of sexual identity; rather, the meanings associated with dress are socially produced and vary across time and place. Evidence for this argument emerges only after a literature review, as one can recognize a common theme linking the literature, or perhaps a commonly …

Poetry’S Outsiders: Why The Academy Should Embrace Poetry Slam And Its Audiences, Jessica G. Simon
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
This thesis addresses the problem of poetry’s declining audience in America by investigating the relationship between the academic poetry and poetry slam communities. Primary and secondary research on the history and current state of these two poetry communities reveal that the academic poetry community does not currently embrace Poetry Slam and its audiences. First, an audience survey of the three largest Poetry Slam audiences in New York City and interviews with slam poets who perform for these audiences suggest that Poetry Slam has the ability to cultivate audiences for poetry outside of the academy. Second, the results of an online …
