Journey Into The Process Of Developing A New Skill, Virginia Mcintyre
Journey Into The Process Of Developing A New Skill, Virginia Mcintyre
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
Learning a new skill is comprised of several characteristics, some which are necessary and others which are desirable. An individual embarking on this endeavor needs practice, persistence and perseverance. It is desirable to possess intrinsic motivation which leads to available energy for the task. The approach to the process should be conducted with an open mind that embraces the fortitude required to overcome obstacles and celebrate achievements. This project includes the process and offers examples of how the reader may strive to meet such a challenge. Included in the process is a note on art and artists, background of the …

Exploring The Affective Nature Of Creativity, Michelle S.J Robert
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
This project was about exploring and expanding my creative self; it explored how the creative process involved in artistic self-expression can help one reduce stress, increase self-awareness, achieve insight and break down barriers that hinder creativity. The project is based on creativity models and a few art therapy techniques. It contains tangible products of my artwork which include: a visual log, a series of photographs, a note book, a „writing therapy‟ booklet, drawings and a collage. I used a wide variety of materials such as brushes, water color, crayons, chalk pastels, oil pastels, coloring pencils, markers, sketch book, construction paper, …

The advertising world is a place focused on research, brand identity, and creativity, all of which combine to achieve one seemingly simple goal: to convince the consumer to purchase a specific item. It is often a difficult enough challenge to persuade a buyer that a product is worth her money, but there is one product category that demands something much more valuable than any price tag cost. This category requires its advertising to create a personal bond with the consumer; to welcome it and want it in her life. What is this audacious sounding product that charges something greater than …
Memory & Cognition: What Difference Does Gender Make?, Donna J. Bridge
Memory & Cognition: What Difference Does Gender Make?, Donna J. Bridge
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Small but significant gender differences, typically favoring women, have previously been observed in experiments measuring human episodic memory performance. In three studies measuring episodic memory, we compared performance levels for men and women. Secondary analysis from a pairedassociate learning task revealed a superior ability for women to learn single function pairs (i.e. words that are represented in only one pair), but performance levels for double function pairs (i.e. pairs that contain words that are also used in one other pair) were similar for men and women. We also reanalyzed data from a recognition experiment that used pictures as stimuli, and …
A Systematic Review Of The Methodology Of Expressive Writing Intervention Studies: Examining Location, Vanessa Juth
A Systematic Review Of The Methodology Of Expressive Writing Intervention Studies: Examining Location, Vanessa Juth
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Expressive writing interventions pertain to emotional disclosure through structured writing. Despite the encouraging results of controlled expressive writing studies, efforts to expand it into applied settings have been less successful and results have been more inconsistent. One varying factor among pertinent studies is the investigators’ alteration of the location of writing (both within and between studies). The purpose of this study is to systematically review the methodology and parameters of expressive writing intervention studies. A computer literature search was conducted using the PsycINFO and MedLine databases to identify peer reviewed articles of randomized controlled trials of the expressive writing intervention …
An Empirical Test Of The Situational Leadership® Model In Japan, Riho Yoshioka
An Empirical Test Of The Situational Leadership® Model In Japan, Riho Yoshioka
Public Affairs Theses - Archive
Since the collapse of the "bubble economy" in the early 1990s, Japanese companies have been struggling with financial difficulty, and have been forced to change their structure, strategies, and management systems. The trend of learning and importing successful American management theories and systems expanded to Japanese society. The Situational Leadership® model, developed by Hersey and Blanchard, is an example of this phenomenon. However, many cross-cultural studies propose that Japanese society has a different culture and values from American society. Therefore, by focusing on Situational Leadership®, this study examined whether models developed in the United States are suitable for Japanese companies. …

When Black Is White: The Social Construction Of Race At Predominantly Black And White Colleges., Louwanda Evans
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
The intended purpose of this project is to examine the social construction of race for Black students attending predominantly Black and Predominantly White colleges. Previous research has examined the experiences of Black students at the college level, but few have attempted to understand the meaning of "Blackness" within these settings. From the perspective of social construction, in-depth interviews were conducted with twenty African American students attending two major universities located in the state of Texas. In this study, several emerging similarities and difference were discovered and discussed concerning what being Black means to students in these contexts. The data takes …
Social Welfare Before The Elizabethan Poor Laws: The Early Christian Tradition, Ad 33 To 313, Vincent Faherty
Social Welfare Before The Elizabethan Poor Laws: The Early Christian Tradition, Ad 33 To 313, Vincent Faherty
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Current social welfare history texts in the United States tend to cover quickly the time periods before the passage of the Elizabethan Poor Laws in 1601. This is an unfortunate informationalgap since what is labeled social welfare today has been organized and delivered for centuries before 1601 through the rich religious traditions of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam and thousands of other traditional religions throughout the world. This article provides a broad historical overview of the organization, the roles, and the services provided by the social welfare system in Christian communities, during their first three centuries, throughout what is now …
Welfare Reform And Post-Secondary Education In Maine: A Supplemental Bibliography, Luisa S. Deprez
Welfare Reform And Post-Secondary Education In Maine: A Supplemental Bibliography, Luisa S. Deprez
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
In the September 2005 issue of the Journal, Charles Price authored an article entitled "Reforming Welfare Reform Postsecondary Education Policy: Two State Case Studies in Political Culture, Organizing, and Advocacy" (Volume XXXII, Number 3: 81-106). It is a timely article; the issue of access to postsecondary education for women on welfare is a crucial one. Not only did the 1996 welfare "reform" law heighten the already harsh and punitive attitudes toward poor women raising children on their own, newly incorporated restrictive elements severely hampered, and in some cases eliminated, these women's ability to move off welfare and into stable, well-paying …

Use Best Practices To Promote Your Library, Adeen Postar
All Faculty Scholarship
Best Practices is a term dating back to the 1980s that was popularized by business writers, most notably Tom Peters and Robert Waterman in their bestseller In Search of Excellence: Lessons From America's Best Run Companies (1982). Essentially, this term implies success; that certain actions, attitudes, and programs are the most efficient and effective way of doing business and that the same measures can be used with successful outcomes in all similar organizations. But are there really best practices that can help enhance public relations for every type of law library? I believe that there are.

Assessing Reliability Of Expert Ratings Among Judges Responding To A Survey Instrument Developed To Study The Long Term Efficacy Of The Abet Engineering Criteria, Ec2000, Tracy L. Litzinger
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
In today’s assessment processes, especially those evaluations that rely on humans to make subjective judgements, it is necessary to analyze the quality of their ratings. The psychometric issues associated with assessment provide the lens through which researchers interpret results and important decisions are made. Therefore, inter-rater agreement (IRA) and inter-rater reliability (IRR) are pre-requisites for rater-dependent data analysis. A survey instrument cannot provide “good” information if it is not reliable; in other words, reliability is central to the validation of an instrument. When judges cannot be shown to reliably rate a performance, item, or target, the question becomes why the …

When And Where I Enter: Social Determinants Of Mental Health Services Use Among African American Women, Shonreh Doss
When And Where I Enter: Social Determinants Of Mental Health Services Use Among African American Women, Shonreh Doss
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
African Americans utilize mental health services significantly less frequently than do White-Americans. This study examined the social factors that work to influence the decision to seek services outside of the social circle. Using the National Survey of Black Americans, 4th wave, factors were examined using logistic regression analysis to test the likelihood of accessing the sick role. In addition to the sick role, regression analysis was used to determine the sick role's effect on the decision to seek outside care. Controlling for education, perceived racism, religiosity and employment problems, the findings suggest that life control and socioeconomic status factors influence …

An Assessment Of School Adjustment In Head Start Children, Rachel Waford
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of the current study was to pilot test measures of cognitive-linguistic achievement and socioemotional competence to create an all encompassing model of school adjustment in a sample of Head Start children (N = 36). Past research examining school adjustment in low-income children has failed to address all of the components of school adjustment while often employing the same reporter (the teacher) for both predictor and outcome measures. Cognitive-linguistic measures included four subtests from the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Achievement and two assessments of phonological awareness (rhyming and alliteration). Emotion regulation measures included teacherreported emotionality and emotion regulation, parent-reported emotionality …

Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations
This thesis project equipped the elders to function as a community of men called and authorized by God to bless and send his people into the world for the sake of the world. They were equipped through seven sessions of theological reflection on Scripture and reflection on narratives of those who have offered pastoral blessings. The sessions also included an examination of templates and the opportunity to practice writing and speaking blessings. The elders have been speaking a shepherd’s blessing as the last liturgical act of the Sunday assembly. In this project, missional and textual focus was given to the …

Student Discipline: Analyses And Comparisons Of Behaviors Which Incur Suspension Or Expulsion For Minority And Non-Minority Students In The State Of Indiana, A. Sue Girvin Ward
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research study was undertaken on the premise that the public had concerns regarding a11egations that minority-students were suspended or expelled more frequently than non-minority students. The implication of excessive disciplinary action on minority students emerged when the Zero-Tolerance Act was adopted in l 994. The Act was an amendment to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. Critics state disciplinary action under zero-tolerance policies has unduly affected all students but has primarily affected children from families oflowcr socioeconomic status and ethnic minority groups. This study, using the chi-square goodness of fit test, examined the 2002-2003 disciplinary statistics of …
