A Realistic Job Preview For Deputy Jailer Applicants, Joseph Dunn May 2006

A Realistic Job Preview For Deputy Jailer Applicants, Joseph Dunn

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A common method for reducing turnover in organizations is the implementation of a realistic job preview (RJP). Unlike typical job descriptions that might be seen in newspapers, on the Internet, or on television, the differentiating characteristic of an RJP is that both positive and negative aspects of the job are presented to the prospective employee such that the applicant has a very realistic idea of the nature of the job. An RJP in both an audio-visual format and a written brochure was developed for deputy jailer applicants at the Warren County Regional Jail in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Consistent with hypotheses, …

An Examination Of The Similarities Between Same-Grade Friends And Different-Grade Friends, Brenna Kelley May 2006

An Examination Of The Similarities Between Same-Grade Friends And Different-Grade Friends, Brenna Kelley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to examine the similarity between same-grade and different-grade friendship pairs compared to randomly paired children in the same grade and in different grades. Previous research has focused primarily on examining same-grade children's friendships and has not examined friendships of children differing in grade. This study examined similarities between same- and different-grade friends on teacher-rated behaviors and peer relations variables. Children in 78 ungraded primary classrooms (N = 908) participated in a socio-metric interview and were rated by their teachers using the Teacher-Child Rating Scale (T-CRS, Hightower, 1986). Friendship pairs were composed of children who …

Supranational Networks: States And Firms, Alvin W. Wolfe May 2006

Supranational Networks: States And Firms, Alvin W. Wolfe

Peace and Conflict Studies

The nation-state systems that seem to dominate the global landscape are not necessarily the pinnacle of evolution. A conglomeration of interacting factors spelled doom for the traditional colonialism of previous centuries while providing an ideal environment for multinational firms operating above the level of nation-states to play an important role in the generation of a new politico-socio-economic system better described by network models than by ordinary political models. Previously existing units and subunits, in the course of adjustment and adaptation to changing circumstances, change their relations with one another and are, sometimes, newly integrated in a novel manner such that …

The Seeking Of Baby-Feeding Information By Canadian Women Pregnant With Twins, Pamela J. Mckenzie May 2006

The Seeking Of Baby-Feeding Information By Canadian Women Pregnant With Twins, Pamela J. Mckenzie

FIMS Publications

Objective: to analyse baby-feeding information needs and seeking described by Canadian women pregnant with twins. Design, setting, and participants: in-depth semi-structured interviews with 19 pregnant women were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Transcripts provided the data for discourse analysis of the use of two interpretative repertoires. Measurements and findings: the first interpretative repertoire represented caring for twins as fundamentally distinct from caring for singly-born children and therefore emphasised the commonality of mothers of twins regardless of their background or situation. The second highlighted the uniqueness and individuality of each person. These repertoires intersect with discourses of baby- feeding and good mothering, …

Professional Ethics: Forensic Anthropology And Human Rights Work, Jana Webb May 2006

Professional Ethics: Forensic Anthropology And Human Rights Work, Jana Webb

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Human rights forensic anthropology does not have an ethical code developed specifically for this field. Currently, forensic anthropologists look to ethical codes in different fields. These codes may offer differing opinions. They do not address the specific work and issues forensic anthropologists may encounter in the field. An analysis of existing ethical codes in anthropology and forensic science was done to show which areas of the code were applicable to human rights forensic anthropology. Areas that these codes needed to address were also demonstrated. It was found that there was an emphasis on honesty and responsibility. Professionals had responsibilities to …

A school's transition to include more special education students in regular classrooms is a fundamental change that impacts all faculty, staff, and students. The purpose of this study was to consider inclusion of middle school special education students in regular classrooms from the perspective of principals, special education teachers and regular education teachers. From these three perspectives, best practices for inclusion, barriers and supports to inclusion, and the principal's role as change agent when moving a middle school towards inclusion were investigated. One-hundred Indiana middle schools were randomly selected. Surveys were sent to the principal, one special education and one …

People, Pixels, & Weights: Some Novel Applications Of Remote Sensing And Geographically Weighted Regression For Evansville, Indiana, Eric W. Lafary

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The exploration of urban-environmental changes and how those transformations co-vary with observed socio-economic realities is currently a major research initiative in geography. To that end, this thesis develops an urban-environmental assessment regime that examines how environmental change co-varies with observed socio-economic conditions. Research has demonstrated existing linkages between observed conditions in regard to socio-economic status (SES) and a particular greenness index, as represented by, normal difference vegetation index (NDVI). However, a gap within the literature has been identified concerning the current methodologies that propose to predict SES using remotely sensed data. Therefore, this thesis addresses this gap within the related …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years community colleges have faced both internal and external challenges in maintaining the college mission. Primarily these challenges connect with funding challenges and the evolving nature of community college funding patterns. This comparative case study assesses two community colleges in contrasting settings within the same state. These colleges were identified by their contrasting service areas that were primarily either rural or urban in nature. Institutional data with combined interview data served as the primary data sources for constructing narratives of how each college's rural or urban location impacts strategic planning processes. Previous research on economic development suggests that …

Genocide: A Humanities Prospective, Linda Nico May 2006

Genocide: A Humanities Prospective, Linda Nico

Senior Honors Projects

In 1943, Raphael Lemkin coined the term “genocide” to describe the horrific events of the holocaust. Soon after, world leaders gathered and famously proclaimed “Never again.” Since the 1940’s the leaders of these same nations have seen similar atrocities committed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Timor, and even today in Sudan, but taken little responsibility in aiding the victims of these unspeakable acts. The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of 1948 has done little to encourage the neither prevention nor punishment of the crimes of genocide. Who will study and analyze the subject of genocide, the …

Assessing Past Strategies For Countering Terrorism, In Lebanon And By Libya, Louis Kriesberg May 2006

Assessing Past Strategies For Countering Terrorism, In Lebanon And By Libya, Louis Kriesberg

Peace and Conflict Studies

American strategies to deal with terrorist attacks against Americans in Lebanon in the 1980s and by Libya since the beginning of the 1980s are examined. The consequences of the various strategies employed by U.S. government officials over time and the strategies employed by American non-governmental actors and by international organizations are compared. In addition, alternative strategies that might plausibly have been employed are also discussed. Official actions that relied largely on military methods and were conducted unilaterally tended to be less effective, even counterproductive, compared to actions that were multilateral and relied significantly on diplomatic approaches, often aided by intermediaries.

Rudolf The Haitian Reindeer And Other Heroes: Helping Children Perform Change, Anne Hearon Rambo, Nathalie Duque Bello, Maud Pasquet

Peace and Conflict Studies

A meta analysis of studies concerning youth violence suggests that when children see themselves and are seen by surrounding adults as positive, prosocial leaders, they are less likely to become involved in bullying either as bullies or as victims (1). MFT’s have recently been encouraged to work more directly with children (2) and to adapt their service delivery methods to the needs of clients (3). The authors worked directly with 122 children in their community settings, involving parents and school officials as an encouraging audience (4) to the children’s new views of themselves. 90% of preteen girls (ages 9 to …

U.S. Public Image: A Study Of The Perceptions Of International Students From Predominantly Muslim Nations, Mary Kathryn Pinkerton

Communication Theses - Archive

After the United States-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, anti-Americanism increased among predominantly Muslim nations. This qualitative study used in-depth interviews to explore the perceptions of 11 international students from predominantly Muslim nations toward the U.S. It also examines whether the students' perceptions have changed since arriving in the United States and whether perceptions could stem from propaganda. Results indicated generally positive perceptions toward America and significantly improved perceptions toward Americans. Perceptions of the U.S. government, the Bush administration and U.S. foreign policy, however, were generally negative -- primarily stemming from the war in Iraq and America's role in the …
