The decline in welfare rolls coupled with the increase in work activity among former recipients since the mid-nineties might indicate that welfare reform legislation has been a success. This is only part of the story describing the impact of welfare reform. Although many have exited the rolls, a significant number still have not found work, others remain on aid, and some struggle through the transition relying on a combination of welfare and work. Even those who fit the narrow definition of "success" and have left welfare for formal employment experience significant hardship. Overall, regardless of work and welfare status, most …

The purposes of this study were to determine the likelihood of reporters to adopt Geographical Information Systems and to predict the future of the diffusion of GIS in the journalism industry using the diffusion of innovations theory. The study used two data collection methods: in-depth interviews and a Web survey. The indepth-interviews revealed factors that will influence the diffusion of GIS, including the availability of map data, competition between media agencies, the ease of getting management to buy GIS once its functionality has been demonstrated to them, and the general use of secondary GIS products. Stein-rule estimators, also known as shrinkage estimators, combine sample and non-sample information in a way that improves the precision of the estimation process or the quality of subsequent predictions. A Stein-rule estimator is a weighted average of a restricted and an unrestricted estimator, where the weights determine the degree of shrinkage, i.e. the importance that we place on the non-sample information. The existing literature shows that Stein-rule estimators may lead to squared error risk improvements in the linear regression, and in a number of non-linear models. In the first part of this study, 37 commodity bag garments made and worn by one woman in rural South Louisiana between the years 1949-1968 were analyzed. The garments are currently in the collection of the Louisiana State University Textile and Costume Museum. A material culture study model, originally developed by Fleming and adapted from Severa and Horswill, was used to identify, evaluate, culturally analyze and interpret the design, construction, and fabric characteristics of garments. Access to this collection provided a rare opportunity to examine the attributes of a related group of commodity bag garments. In the second part of …

Research over the past fifty years, with respect to the choices that individuals make in terms of maximizing their own well-being, has covered several areas. Additionally, the legal climate has changed dramatically over this time period and research in this area has covered the possible effects on economic outcomes, including an individual's well-being. The first essay focuses on the trend in trade union membership in the U.S. over the last few decades. There are two Connecticuts described in public education circles: One Connecticut includes a set of school systems that are suburban, educating primarily white and/or Asian students. The other set of Connecticut schools systems is urban, comprised primarily of students of color, and of low socio-economic status. The purpose of this chapter is to focus on the latter set of schools, provide some history of their development, look at the indicators of poor progress in more detail, review options of ameliorating the urban school systems, including assessments of state efforts so far, and offer some perspectives and conclusions.

The New Horizon Program mainly offers services to juveniles to correct their deviant behaviors and cognitive distortions, including substance abuse assessment and counseling, anger management, medication support, individual and group counseling, mental health counseling, and social skill development training. The EQUIP model is the main element in the in-custody service of the New Horizons Program. In order to create change, it is imperative that grassroots movements and organizations adopt effective mobilization strategies. This thesis will provide a model for how Democracy Unlimited of Humboldt County (DUHC) mobilizes citizens to action in a rural community. It will be argued that many of the mobilization strategies employed by DUHC can be applied by other grassroots organization across a variety of issues. Although DUHC is focused on undermining corporate power and the legitimacy of corporate personhood, their mobilization strategies can be a useful tool for very different types of organizations. This study examines the Ejército Zapatista Liberación Nacional (EZLN) and Zapatista base communities contributions to an autonomous “revolutionary” theory and practice. The focus of this thesis is the evolution of Zapatismo as elaborated in the Zapatistas’ communiqués following the EZLN’s deceleration of war against the Mexican government on January 1, 1994, the same day that the North American Free Trade Agreement between the United States, Canada, and Mexico went into effect. This thesis represents a critical comparative and historical study of the challenges posed to the autonomy and sovereignty of the nation-state by the emerging transnational class structure in the current era of global accumulation. I examine key elements of modern state theory, contrasting them with class-based state theory. National models may be extended to help illustrate transnational relationships. Transnational institutions, components of the transnational state apparatus, serve as examples of the means by which this transnational capitalist class formulates and implements policy. But this transnational structure is not stable; it suffers from the very contradictions immanent to capitalism itself. I …

Effects Of Spaced Retrieval On Memory And Quality Of Life In Older Adults With Probable Alzheimer's Disease, Karri S. Hawley

This study was designed to explore the effects of spaced-retrieval training on memory and quality of life in older adults with probable Alzheimer’s disease. A total nineteen older adults with probable Alzheimer’s disease (AD) participated in these experiments. Experiment one was designed to determine whether the spacing effect is contributing to the success of the spaced-retrieval intervention. Participants were trained to recall a name-face association using either the adjusted spaced-retrieval method or a fixed interval retrieval method. The results showed a more consistent performance profile for the spaced retrieval group in comparison to the fixed interval group, providing evidence that …

The Emperors in Japan were considered as gods for the Japanese people until World War II ended. The Japanese worshiped the Emperors and obeyed whatever the orders were given in the Emperor’s name. However, under the Occupation of the Allied Powers led by General Douglas MacArthur, Emperor Hirohito’s role changed from ‘divine ruler’ to the ‘state symbol’ of Japan, He was not supposed to have any political power over the Japanese people, but his influence was still huge after the defeat. Waldorf schools are nationally and internationally federated institutions that provide kindergarten through twelfth grade educations. Created in Germany in 1919 during the Progressive Education Movement and existing in the United States since 1928, Waldorf schools use a true unit study approach integrating the arts into all areas of academic study, yet eschewing some of the standard facets of American education, such as standardized testing, most subject matter testing (in grades K-8), competition for grades, ability grouping and academic tracking, and the use of electronic technology (in grades K-8). Currently, 149 private Waldorf and 44 Waldorf-methods public charter schools serve over …

Advances in Language Engineering may be dependent on theoretical principles originating from linguistics since both share a common object of enquiry, natural language structures. We outline an approach to term extraction that rests on theoretical claims about the structure of words. We use the structural properties of compound words to specifically elicit the sets of terms defined by type hierarchies such as hyponymy and meronymy. The theoretical claims revolve around the head-modifier principle which determines the formation of a major class of compounds. Significantly it has been suggested that the principle operates in languages other than English. To demonstrate the …

Determinants Of Poverty In Kenya: A Household Level Analysis, Alemayehu Geda, Niek De Jong, Mwangi S. Kimenyi, Germano Mwabu

Economics Working Papers

Strategies aimed at poverty reduction need to identify factors that are strongly associated with poverty and that are amenable to modification by policy. This article uses household level data collected in 1994 to examine probable determinants of poverty status, employing both binomial and polychotomous logit models. The study shows that poverty status is strongly associated with the level of education, household size and engagement in agricultural activity, both in rural and urban areas. In general, those factors that are closely associated with overall poverty according to the binomial model are also important in the ordered-logit model, but they appear to …

Yemeni intellectuals voiced human rights concerns throughout the twentieth century. Of course, as elsewhere, the early incarnations of a human rights movement in this most populous corner of Arabia did not use the term huquq al-insan (human rights), popularized only in the 1990s. Moreover, the emphasis was consistently on limiting arbitrary governance and justice. Still, Yemenis tackled issues such as social equality, popular participation, judicial autonomy, due process, prison conditions, and intellectual freedom, among others. This chapter explores how a fragmented yet tenacious intellectual movement grounded in indigenous political culture produced writings intended to breach authoritarianism for over half a …
