For instance, this theory neglects the nature of demographic and social formation of states in using this concept to explain alliances. The present study uses the Constructivist approach in studying these causes. Constructivists, argue that understanding how actors develop their interests is important in explaining international political phenomenon. To explain interest formation, they focus on the social identities of individuals or states. Identity, makes some countries more attractive than others. E-Governance In Egypt: A New Methodology To Poverty Reduction, Shahdan Mahmoud Niazi

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The aim of the thesis is to examine if the e-governance initiative in Egypt can contribute to poverty reduction. The study utilizes people-centered indicators by employing Sen's "capability approach" where Sen shifts from the traditional understanding of poverty as derivative of insufficient resources to a new perspective which incorporates the lack of capabilities and opportunities into the definition of the term. The thesis concludes that IT is not the determinant cure that can transform the mode of governance within the government sector in a way that can contribute to poverty alleviation. Archived Theses and Dissertations

The UNHCR Handbook on Voluntary Repatriations, as well as Executive Committee Conclusions, highlights the importance of adequate information upon evaluating repatriation. Nonetheless, few studies have concentrated on how refugees collect and evaluate available information regarding conditions in country of origin, and whether the accessible information is adequate to make an informed decision on repatriation.

This thesis analyses how southern Sudanese refugees in Cairo collect, evaluate, and use information about conditions in Sudan when they evaluate the possibilities of a return to Sudan. Five sources of information are available to the refugee community: the general Sudanese community in Cairo, including newcomers …

Honor And War, Amanda Frances Paulin

Archived Theses and Dissertations

International conflicts have modified into entities that would have been unrecognizable to scholars and practitioners of International Relations two decades or so ago. The global battlefield is transforming into, not objective reality, but rather a field of combined social aspects used to manipulate and twist reality in favor of the players seeking to overcome power positions and grievances. Current patterns of cooperation and conflict constitute a new paradigm of understanding for political science and international relations theorists. Traditional dynamics of power struggles between interstate conflicts have disappeared and instead have been replaced with a complex set of dynamics based on …

Farmworkers In The Desert: An Anthropological Study Of A Village In Reclaimed Desert Land In Egypt, Kazuaki Takemura

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This is an anthropological study of farmworkers living in reclaimed desert land in Egypt. Since the start in the early-1950s, desert land reclamation has been a governmental enterprise to increase cultivable land in order to keep pace with the rapid population growth. From the mid-1970s, reclaimed desert areas started to be distributed to various groups of people. "Peasants, "university graduates", "public company employees", and recently "evicted tenants" received small plots of land from the government, and became small-scale farmers. The government has considered them as the main components of such "new land" projects. Likewise, development programs and research institutions in …

Institutionalization And Reform: The Case Of The National Democratic Party In Egypt, Safinaz El Tarouty

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the National Democratic Party in Egypt (NDP). It assesses the internal dynamics and reforms of the party between 2000 and 2004 and asks to what extent these reforms have influenced the nature and institutionalization of the party. Starting from the emergence of the Egyptian republic, it traces the rise and development of the consecutive single parties under Nasser and the creation of the NDP under Sadat in 1978. This thesis suggests that the reforms of 2000 do not appear to have significantly increased the level of institutionalization of Egypt’s persistently dominant party. It argues that the reforms …

Contemporary Alevi Politics: The Case Of Corum, Hande Bayrak Jun 2005

Contemporary Alevi Politics: The Case Of Corum, Hande Bayrak

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Among the scholars of Turkey, there is a wide-spread tendency to view post-1980s as an era of progress and liberalization that also encompasses the fom1ation of a nascent civil society. Within that context, the contemporary revival of Alevilik in Turkey, along with the revival of Sunni Islam, is believed to demonstrate how a culture based group challenges the authority of the homogeneous national identity. Thus, the increasing visibility of Alevis in the public sphere is also taken as a proof of the formation of a pluralist and multicultural environment in Turkey, in which the power of the state is diminished. …
