A Qualitative Study: Gendered Perceptions Of Bullying Among Adolescents At A Boys And Girls Club., Beverly Small Chandley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bullying is a form of peer violence needing extensive research to help understand the differences in gender for the prevention of such behavior. Most research has been performed in school settings and in a quantitative manner. This study was conducted by six researchers in an after-school facility with a qualitative approach. A minimum of 15 hours per researcher was spent observing behaviors and 20 interviews were performed. A grounded theory approach was used for the analysis of data which tend to show more similarities than differences in the way children bully as well as their perceptions of bullying.

Prostitution And The Sex Industry In Kentucky, Gary W. Potter May 2005

Prostitution And The Sex Industry In Kentucky, Gary W. Potter

Kentucky Justice and Safety Research Bulletin

The provision of sexual services for profit has become a major illicit industry in the hidden economy of Kentucky. Prostitution on the streets, in massage parlors, through escort services, and in bars and strip clubs is common throughout much of the Commonwealth. The evidence shows that criminal organizations ranging from individual entrepreneurships, to small crime networks, to international sex trafficking organizations are active in the provision of illicit sexual services in Kentucky. Thousands of women are employed as sex workers, over one million illicit sexual transactions occur annually, and criminal organizations rake in a minimum of $100,000,000 a year in …

Women In Prison In Massachusetts: Maintaining Family Connections, Erika Kates, Paige Ransford, Carol Cardozo

Publications from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy

This report first provides an overview of the statistical data on women in prisons in the U.S. over the past two decades. It pays particular attention to the literature on the effects of mothers' incarceration on their children and the gradual recognition of the emotional, economic, and legal consequences for families when parents, especially mothers, are incarcerated. When viewed in this broad context it becomes clear that the concerns and challenges families face extend beyond the perimeters of a single agency or policy area. The Growth Of The Commerce Clause As Mechanism Of Control, Paul R. Rickert Mar 2005

The Growth Of The Commerce Clause As Mechanism Of Control, Paul R. Rickert

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Article 1, Section 8, clause 3 of the United States Constitution states that “Congress shall have the power… To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes”. This short and simple statement has been progressively used, in combination with a few other powers both granted and assumed by various federal actors, to take greater and broader powers over the states and private citizenry. The original judicial understanding of the so-called Commerce Clause (differentiated from original intent) comes from the 1824 case of Gibbons v. Ogden, 22 U.S. 1. Through subsequent cases, the judicial …

The Accelerating Degradation Of American Criminal Codes, Paul H. Robinson, Michael T. Cahill Mar 2005

The Accelerating Degradation Of American Criminal Codes, Paul H. Robinson, Michael T. Cahill

All Faculty Scholarship

This Article addresses the ongoing-and, indeed, accelerating process of sporadic, piecemeal, and unnecessary legislation leading to increasing inconsistencies and irrationalities in American criminal law. After a wave of modernization in the I960s and 1970s, the past generation has not witnessed further advances, but rather a serious and growing degradation of most criminal codes. This Article offers several insights regarding criminal code degradation. First, it provides specific and concrete examples of degradation and its harmful effects. Second, drawing on their experiences as participants in the recent reform efforts of Illinois and Kentucky, the authors offer an insider's view of how the …

Understanding And Surviving An Aircraft Hijack, Brian Kingshott Jan 2005

Understanding And Surviving An Aircraft Hijack, Brian Kingshott

Brian F. Kingshott

Although aircraft hijacking (air piracy) incidents have decreased since the 1970s and 80s, the possibility of an incident occurring remains a threat that should not be ignored. In this paper, discussion will focus on a terrorist incident occurring whereby armed personnel seize an aircraft in flight and hold all passengers and crew as hostages. The common factors associated with acts of air piracy include, but are not limited to, high state of fear, apprehension, indecisiveness, as well as physical and psychological trauma. By knowing the possible actions, or reactions, of all involved will allow individuals to deal with this trauma.

Recovering Digital Evidence From Linux Systems, Philip Craiger Jan 2005

Recovering Digital Evidence From Linux Systems, Philip Craiger

J. Philip Craiger, Ph.D.

As Linux-kernel-based operating systems proliferate there will be an inevitable increase in Linux systems that law enforcement agents must process in criminal investigations. The skills and expertise required to recover evidence from Microsoft-Windows-based systems do not necessarily translate to Linux systems. This paper discusses digital forensic procedures for recovering evidence from Linux systems. In particular, it presents methods for identifying and recovering deleted files from disk and volatile memory, identifying notable and Trojan files, finding hidden files, and finding files with renamed extensions. All the procedures are accomplished using Linux command line utilities and require no special or commercial tools.
