There is great uncertainty about when and under what circumstances there is a need for a presentence report prior to the sentencing of a young offender. To clear up this confusion, various judgements have addressed the matter. It emerged as a general rule that presentencing reports 'should' be obtained for all offenders under the age of 18 years. Policy makers often bemoan the shortcomings and inefficiency of youth development and similar social work programs whose effectiveness cannot be demonstrated by quantifiable performance indicators. This study argues, through illustration of the Odyssey Learning Center’s Discovery Program (an alternative school serving rural Southern youth in an abject poverty context), that program value can only be evidenced through a mixed-methodological evaluation design. Reasons precluding traditional statistical analysis and effectiveness determinations are discussed and alternative conceptualizations of program value are considered.

Although aircraft hijacking (air piracy) incidents have decreased since the 1970s and 80s, the possibility of an incident occurring remains a threat that should not be ignored. In this paper, discussion will focus on a terrorist incident occurring whereby armed personnel seize an aircraft in flight and hold all passengers and crew as hostages. The common factors associated with acts of air piracy include, but are not limited to, high state of fear, apprehension, indecisiveness, as well as physical and psychological trauma. By knowing the possible actions, or reactions, of all involved will allow individuals to deal with this trauma.

Of particular interest to the author is how the defining moment of the Butler decision has been opened up to contestation and complication by Little Sisters Book and Art Emporium et. al. v. Consequently, they expand the power and role of the government. One way this is done is through progressive criminalization of once held freedoms. The primary goal of the current study was to develop a novel experimental paradigm with which to study the influence of psychologically based interrogation techniques on the likelihood of true and false confessions. The paradigm involves guilty and innocent participants being accused of intentionally breaking an experimental rule, or ‘‘cheating.’’ In the first demonstration of this paradigm, we explored the influence of two common police interrogation tactics: minimization and an explicit offer of leniency, or a ‘‘deal.’’ Results indicated that guilty persons were more likely to confess than innocent persons, and that the use of minimization and the offer of …
