The Effects Of Interracial Contact On Whites' Racial Attitudes Toward African Americans, Lindsay K. Hixson

Dissertations and Theses

Whites' racial attitudes are influenced by a variety of factors. Research offers varied findings on the extent to which interracial contact promotes positive racial attitudes. Previous researchers have not explored the process by which whites acquire positive racial attitudes. This thesis is an attempt to fill this gap in the literature.

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the conditions that lead to positive white racial attitudes. It is primarily concerned with the conditions that encourage whites to become empathetic to the social positions of African Americans. As the population of Mexican immigrant learners continues to increase in the Northwest, an understanding of the cultural, social and psychological realities of these students' lives becomes an ever more important issue for professional language educators, classroom teachers, and school administrators. Our understanding of the needs of these learners will have an important effect on how prepared they are to participate in academic situations and community life.

Developing A Leadership Perspective In The Classroom, John E. Barbuto Jr.

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

This paper presents a normative pedagogical model that integrates leadership theory, student development, and cognitive/ego development. The first step, assessment of students’ developmental stage/ needs, uses a developmental model to assess students’ developmental and motivational needs. The second step, selection of teaching style, incorporates leadership literature to develop teaching styles selected based on the developmental and motivational needs of students. The third step in the continuous process, evaluation of outcomes, involves assessment of either continued development and/or increased student motivation and improved student learning. Research and teaching implications of the proposed model are also discussed.

What started as two initiatives involving public and private entities in Nebraska has resulted in the development of the Governor’s Task Force on Agriculture and Natural Resources Education. Both initiatives were funded by grants from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation of Battle Creek, Michigan. One went to The Reinventing Agriculture Education for the Year 2020 Project which was coordinated by the Nebraska Department of Education. The Anchor, Volume 114.02: September 13, 2000, Hope College

The Anchor: 2000

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
