Extending beyond the normal boundaries of education, a growing number of educators are widening their students’ knowledge base to include the landmine crisis plaguing multiple countries, thereby raising the global consciousness of this humanitarian problem. Commendably, students around the world are assuming an active role in the crisis, aware of the potential damage waiting to strike at the heart of their generation, as landmines and UXO annually claim numerous children as victims. The complexity of the issue of alternatives to AP landmines is great from both a humanitarian and a technical standpoint. Stances on this issue seem to range from the substantive and supported (by research and field experience) and the reactionary (i.e., unbending humanitarianism). When the differing stances are considered, the one conclusion that can be drawn is the need for the discovery of a middle ground. That is, given current levels of technology, what can be done to end the suffering of the innocent while protecting the combatant?

With its conclusion in July 2000 and certification a month later, the level one landmine survey in Yemen has provided the Yemeni authorities with a wealth of reliable information from which to plan and prioritize activities. For many people this means planning for mine clearance, but the utility of the level one data goes far beyond clearance. The Landmine Survivors Network (LSN) made an agreement with the Jordan Ministry of Social Development to facilitate mine awareness throughout the year 2000. For a week in August, youth center supervisors from throughout Jordan attended Mine Risk Education Training in Aqaba, Jordan. The LSN facilitated the workshop with cooperation from Rädda Barnen and the Royal Jordanian Army Corps of Engineers. All 60 of the youth center supervisors in Jordan were invited to attend the mine awareness training. A total of 44 Jordanian Youth Center Supervisors attended the workshop, 13 females and 31 males. Through a variety of mine awareness techniques and programs, Adopt-A-Minefield promotes a landmine free environment by involving individuals, community associations and businesses in the process. Essentially, Adopt-A-Minefield functions as a liaison between the affected communities and sponsors. To accomplish this vital task, Adopt-A-Minefield acknowledges no political debates or boundaries. Rather, it allows individuals to contribute their resources to the overall goal, establishing common ground between the contributors and the mine-affected populations upon which to build lasting relationships. The program also adheres to its tenet that through cooperation the world can rid itself of this less-publicized but intensely severe problem.

In October-November 1998, Hurricane Mitch wreaked havoc upon the Caribbean and parts of Central America. The damage the storm produced was unprecedented in the affected areas. In Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Costa Rica, UNICEF compiled these estimates on the human toll: 8,421 killed, 7,671 missing, 10,190 wounded, 1,537,687 evacuated and left homeless and 1,654,000 more affected in some direct way. Furthermore, Hurricane Mitch caused $6 billion worth of damage to the infrastructure of these countries.

Late-Talking Toddlers: Mlu And Ipsyn Outcomes At 3;0 And 4;0, Leslie Rescorla, Katherine Dahlsgaard, Julie Roberts

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Expressive language outcomes measured by MLU and the Index of Productive Syntax (IPSyn) at ages 3;0 and 4;0 were investigated in 34 late talkers with normal receptive language identified between 2;0 to 2;7 and 16 typically developing comparison children matched on age, SES, and nonverbal ability. Late talkers made greater gains than comparison children between 3;0 and 4;0 in both MLU and IPSyn raw score. However, when age-standardized x-scores were analysed, the late talkers were about 2.5 Standard deviations below comparison children on both measures at both ages. Women's Work And Economic Development, Kristin Mammen, Christina Paxson

Publications and Research

Using a cross-country dataset and microdata from India and Thailand, we examine how women's work status changes with economic development. Several clear patterns emerge: women's labor force participation first declines and then rises with development; women move from work in family enterprises to work as paid employees; fertility declines; and gender gaps in education narrow. Women's education levels, and those of their spouses, appear to be important determinants of women's labor market activities. Broad welfare indicators, such as mortality rates and education levels, indicate that women's well-being improves on average with development, both in absolute terms and relative to men.

Uncertainty Over The Quality Of Labor Inputs: A Nonmonopoly Theory Of Union Wages And Hours Worked, Dwight Adamson, Scott Fausti

A theoretical model of labor demand under uncertainty which incorporates the propositions found in the union voice literature is presented. The model generates a positive union effect on wages and hours worked without union monopoly power. The model provides a more detailed conceptual framework for explaining why the union voice effect may improve efficiency within the firm than that currently found in the literature.

Labor market discrimination is defined as a failure to receive compensation equivalent to workers' productivity. In an efficient labor market, a worker's productivity attributes-labor force experience, education, tenure, etc.-and innate ability will be duly rewarded regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, or other individual characteristics. Workers receive pay commensurate with individual productivity. Employers do discriminate in pay and employment between individual productivity characteristics and ability. This is not labor market discrimination. It reflects market efficiency, since workers with productivity attributes and abilities that are highly demanded by employers receive the highest wage rates. NORDINFO’s secretariat was set up in Helsinki, Finland, and some permanent staff 6 was appointed to coordinate the activities. The full name behind the acronym was “The Nordic Cooperative Council for Research Libraries and Scientific Information and Documentation.”

Individuals with disabilities are one of the fastest-growing segments of United States society. In 1970, 11.7% of the United States population was limited in activity, a major factor in measuring and identifying people with disabilities. In 1990, because of the aging of America, 13.7 % of the population could be so identified. By 1994, 15% of the population fell into this group. During this latter period, the older population stayed fairly stable but children and younger adults with disabilities increased greatly. As of 2000, over the last fifteen years, in a major effort at modernization and with an increasing investment by the Chinese government, China established more than twenty national information systems. The libraries we visited were member of some of those national information systems. These national information systems have been charged with setting up the basic foundations of an information industry. They belong to, respectively, the Education System, the Cultural Ministry, the Science and Technology Committee System, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
