The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought
Charles Dickens proved himself a careful observer of working-class oppression in Victorian England, both of men and women, and of causes economic, social, and personal. But as PETER SCHECKNER amply demonstrates, Dickens offered them little means of righting the political and economic order that significantly contributed to their plight. A revolutionary Dickens was not. Professor of English at Ramapo College of New Jersey, Scheckner is the author of Class, Politics, and the Individual: A Study of the Major Works of D. H. Lawrence and An Anthology of Chartist Poetry: Poetry of the British Working Class, 1830s-1850s. He has also written …

Faculty survey. Two-hundred seven faculty teaching academic courses and 30 administrators in two colleges in a mid-west university were surveyed to study the type of education, assistance, and support faculty feel they need to develop educational materials for distance delivery. One-fourth of these teaching faculty had taught via distance and another two-fifths (40%) expect to teach via distance within three to five years.
Findings. Overall faculty feel it is very important to obtain further education about, assistance with, or support for (a) developing interaction, (b) developing instructional materials, and (c) applying selected technologies. They also feel it is very important …

To develop organizational leaders we need to understand how requisite skills are acquired over the course of people's careers. In this article, a cross-sectional design was used to assess differences in leadership skills across six grade levels of officers in the U.S. Army. Increased levels of knowledge, problem-solving skills, systems skills, and social skills were found at higher grade levels. Certain skills and experiences, however, were found to be particularly important at certain phases of leaders' careers. These findings are used to propose an organization-based model of skill development. Implications of this model for leader development programs are discussed.
Social Factors Related To Recovery After Hip Fracture, Debra Lindstrom Hazel
Social Factors Related To Recovery After Hip Fracture, Debra Lindstrom Hazel
Dissertations
Objectives. The relationship between social variables and performance of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) was examined in participants three to nine months after they experienced a hip fracture. All participants were over the age of 60 and living in their own homes before and after their hip fractures.
Method. This study employed both qualitative and quantitative methods. There were 19 participants in the quantitative portion of the study that compared three subjectively rated questionnaires with an objectively rated IADL scale. The independent variable, subjective scales were: (1) Antonovsky’s “Orientation to Life” Scale, which measures the sense of coherence, (2) …

A New Era In American Agriculture, Peter Hosch
A New Era In American Agriculture, Peter Hosch
Major Themes in Economics
The implications of the 1996 Freedom to Farm Bill go far beyond free market agriculture. By moving away from past farm policy and lifting subsidy payments, America's small farmers will be forced out of business. This should have happened gradually over the years. With current agricultural technology and the unique structure of the agriculture industry, the phasing out of the small farmer will be rapid. Current trends in agribusiness consolidation also threaten the rural businesses that have traditionally supported the small farmers and consumer choice in the marketplace.
Trade Adjustment Assistance: Past Issues, Current Concerns, And A Possible Solution, Mike Hanson
Trade Adjustment Assistance: Past Issues, Current Concerns, And A Possible Solution, Mike Hanson
Major Themes in Economics
Compensating workers who are displaced by trade provides a key political tool for advancing the cause of free trade. Since 1962 the United States has provided such compensation through Trade Adjustment Assistance. Throughout much of the program's relatively short life, there has been much criticism of its effectiveness. However, converting the program to one that provides earnings insurance rather than income replacement would greatly improve the program by providing strong incentives to find work.
The Role Of Foreign Direct Investment In Transition Economies, With Special Emphasis On The Republic Of Croatia, Marko Svetina
The Role Of Foreign Direct Investment In Transition Economies, With Special Emphasis On The Republic Of Croatia, Marko Svetina
Major Themes in Economics
This paper examines the process of transition in Central Europe. It examines the development of international trade theories as a basis for the emergence of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), along with a brief history of FDI. Special consideration is given to FDI as a determinate of economic growth in transitional Croatia. It is argued that Croatia has reached a level of economic development where it can make use of substantial amounts of FDI.
Income Inequality And Economic Growth: An Empirical Study About The Effects Of Economic Growth On Income Distribution, Steve Schuler
Income Inequality And Economic Growth: An Empirical Study About The Effects Of Economic Growth On Income Distribution, Steve Schuler
Major Themes in Economics
The Kuznets inverted-U hypothesis has been a source of debate in development economics for years. Most of the recent studies on the subject have been panel studies. In this paper, the author re-considers the possibility of testing the Kuznets hypothesis in a cross-sectional study. The results suggest that the Kuznets hypothesis does hold. However, there are a number of qualifications about the research presented which must be considered.
Population Trends In Rural Iowa: Decline And Recovery, Jake Hansen
Population Trends In Rural Iowa: Decline And Recovery, Jake Hansen
Major Themes in Economics
In the 1980s, the population of the United States increased by 22,219,000 people, or 9.8%. At the same time, the population of the state of lowa declined by 4.7%, meaning a loss of over 136,000 Iowans. Many experts blame the farm crisis of the 1980s for this population decline. As of 1998, only 20 of Iowa's 99 counties had experienced population growth since 1980. The purpose of this paper is to determine the factors that contributed to Iowa's population decline in the 1980s and what Iowans can do to stabilize their population in the years ahead. The focus of this …

Unions, Cartels, And The Political Economy Of American Cities: The Chicago Flat Janitors' Union In The Progressive Era And 1920s, John Jentz
Library Faculty Research and Publications
In 1997, Ira Katznelson contributed to the ongoing discussion among social scientists and historians about how to analyze class formation and the development of the American state. He was particularly interested in tying this research to the history of liberalism in an effort to both historicize the generalizations of Louis Hartz and address the question of American exceptionalism. Evaluating the body of research, Katznelson argued that authors had too frequently abstracted the state from its context and then used it to explain the very phenomena that helped define the state's character in the first place. In part to imbed the …

Research Into The Relationships Among Multicultural Training, Racial And Gender Identity Attitudes And Multicultural Competencies For Counselors, Debbie Koeltzow
Research Into The Relationships Among Multicultural Training, Racial And Gender Identity Attitudes And Multicultural Competencies For Counselors, Debbie Koeltzow
Dissertations
This study explored the relationships among multicultural training, racial identity attitudes, gender identity attitudes, and multicultural competencies in counseling trainees. Two principal research hypotheses were generated. The first generally stated hypothesis was that racial identity and gender identity represent parallel processes for those whose racial and gender identities share a cultural status (minority-minority or majority-majority) and are independent processes for those whose identities do not share a cultural status (minority-majority). The second generally stated hypothesis was that multicultural training predicts racial identity attitudes, gender identity attitudes, and multicultural competencies, and that both racial and gender identity attitudes predict multicultural competencies. …
