Vertical Coordination, Antitrust Law, And International Trade, Stephen F. Hamilton, Kyle Stiegert Apr 2000

Vertical Coordination, Antitrust Law, And International Trade, Stephen F. Hamilton, Kyle Stiegert

Economics

This paper demonstrates that vertically aligned private or public organizations are capable of generating strategic trade advantage similar to that acquired through direct government export subsidization. The model considers two forms of vertical coordination that lead to advantageous trade positions in international markets: upstream vertical restraint and downstream equity sharing. Such practices are commonly employed both by state trading agencies and by private firms in nations with lenient antitrust laws. The finding has important implications under new World Trade Organization (WTO) rules intended to reduce government intervention in international transactions. Recent reforms in the WTO favor nations that sanction highly …

Ddas: Protection Needs In Humanitarian Demining, The Facts (2000), Hd-Aid

Global CWD Repository

I have approached this subject by studying the risks that deminers really face and the injuries that result, then working out how to minimise risk and protect against any residual danger. I bore in mind that there was no point is prescribing an action or a garment that would not be used. This is not an approach widely endorsed in the protective equipment industry, which apparently prefers to base its assessment of risk on experimental data and a scale of injury borrowed from the automobile industry. If the injuries commonly predicted by them were accurate, most of the accident victims …

Corporatism And Civil Society In The People's Republic Of China : Empirical Evidence And Theoretical Implications, Yiu Chung Wong, Che Po Chan Apr 2000

Corporatism And Civil Society In The People's Republic Of China : Empirical Evidence And Theoretical Implications, Yiu Chung Wong, Che Po Chan

CAPS Working Paper Series

This paper raises serious doubts about the theme that depicts “China as a corporatist system”, and argues that, although the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is truly loosening its control over the state enterprises, it still maintains its formal authority and is still playing a leading role in the industrial system. A clarification of the notion is timely in view of the conceptual ambiguity involved. Corporatism could be understood as a set of structures, which link society with the state; in other words, it could be studied as a broader problem of interrelationships between state and society.
