Conscientiousness And The Prediction Of Task Duration: Evidence Of The Role Of Personality In Time Prediction, William Ernest Kelly Apr 2000

Conscientiousness And The Prediction Of Task Duration: Evidence Of The Role Of Personality In Time Prediction, William Ernest Kelly

Doctoral Dissertations

Accuracy in predicting the duration necessary to complete a task is an important dimension of daily fife. There exists a large degree of variation in an individual's accuracy in predicting task duration. One domain suggested to influence accuracy of predicting duration is that of personality factors and individual differences. Empirical and theoretical links were found in the literature between the personality factor conscientiousness, of the Five Factor Model of Personality, anxiety, and predicting task duration. The purpose of this dissertation was to empirically examine the role of conscientiousness and anxiety in the accurate prediction of task duration. Ninety-five undergraduate students …

In Search Of "Sound Practices" For Microfinance, Christopher Dunford Apr 2000

In Search Of "Sound Practices" For Microfinance, Christopher Dunford

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

The notion of "best practices" for all microfinance is challenged in favor of "sound practices" that are appropriate for particular organizational strategies and situations. A simple conceptual framework is offered to facilitate understanding of the current diversity of experiments with product-market pairs (e.g., group-based lending to poor women struggling to earn enough for family survival). Since the microfinance movement is still in a mode of intensive learning, we should not presume too soon what will be "best" for all product-market pairs. We can expect to discover a somewhat different set of sound practices for each distinct product-market pair.

Settlement Patterns And The Origins Of African Jamaican Society: Seville Plantation, St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica, Douglas V. Armstrong, Kenneth G. Kelly Apr 2000

Settlement Patterns And The Origins Of African Jamaican Society: Seville Plantation, St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica, Douglas V. Armstrong, Kenneth G. Kelly

Faculty Publications

Archaeological and historical research at Seville Plantation, Jamaica, are used to explain changes in settlement patterns within the estate's African Jamaican community between 1670 and the late nineteenth century. Sugar plantations, such as Seville, are marked by well-defined spatial order based upon economic and power relations that was imposed upon enslaved communities by planters and managers. Archaeological evidence is used to explore how enslaved Africans modified this imposed order and redefined boundaries in ways that correspond with the development of a distinct African Jamaican society. The rigidly defined linear housing arrangements initially established by the planter, and their relations to …

Asymptotics In Minimum Distance From Independence Estimation, Donald J. Brown, Marten H. Wegkamp Apr 2000

Asymptotics In Minimum Distance From Independence Estimation, Donald J. Brown, Marten H. Wegkamp

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In this paper we introduce a family of minimum distance from independence estimators, suggested by Manski’s minimum mean square from independence estimator. We establish strong consistency, asymptotic normality and consistency of resampling estimates of the distribution and variance of these estimators. For Manski’s estimator we derive both strong consistency and asymptotic normality.

The Imperative For Energizing The Industrial Transformation In Nigeria., D. Olu Ajakaiye, A. Sesan Ayodele Apr 2000

The Imperative For Energizing The Industrial Transformation In Nigeria., D. Olu Ajakaiye, A. Sesan Ayodele

Bullion

The paper examined the imperative for energizing the industrial transformation. Given the foreign uncompetitive and high cost economic environment, the imperative for energizing the industrial transformation in Nigeria, is to create a conducive environment under which there would be free inflow of foreign investible funds. This may not be possible unless the current industrial environment changes to one whose enabling environment encourages industrial policy instruments that make Nigeria a least cost industrial producer. This suggests something drastic must be done policy-wise to modify the existing high bank-lending rate to make it supportive to the industrialization process. Besides, the depreciation of …

Implementation Of Empirically Validated Interventions In Managed Care Settings: The Premarital Relationship Enhancement Program (Prep), Kieran T. Sullivan, Dalia Goldschmidt

Psychology

In an age of managed care, how does the clinician best help couples in marital distress? Do the short-term protocols developed and tested in the laboratory really work in the average clinical setting? This project examined the feasibility and effectiveness of implementing a laboratory-based program designed to prevent the development of relationship distress within a health maintenance organization. Both men and women reported high satisfaction with the program and a subjective sense that it was helpful for their relationships. Specific suggestions are made for assisting therapists in using effective treatments for couples in managed care settings.

The Theory Of Money, Martin Shubik Apr 2000

The Theory Of Money, Martin Shubik

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Fiat money is a creation of both the state and society. Its value is supported by expectations which are conditioned by the dynamics of trust in government, the socio-economic structure and by outside events such as wars, plagues or political unrest. The micro-management of a dynamic economy is not far removed in difficulty from the micro-management of the weather. However, money and the financial institutions and instruments of a modern economy provide the means to influence expectations and bound behavior. Paper money emerges as a virtual commodity. The dynamics of the economy permits it to serve as an imaginary gold. …

Public Opinion On The Third Term City Charter Amendment (April, 2000), Susan E. Howell Apr 2000

Public Opinion On The Third Term City Charter Amendment (April, 2000), Susan E. Howell

Survey Research Center Publications

This survey presents the opportunity to examine whether opinions have shifted in support for the third term charter change over the last year. It represents voters' opinions on a controversial issue that has received an increased amount of media attention. When compared with voters' opinions in 1999, the results demonstrate that support for the charter change has declined. A closer look shows that this decline in support was primarily due to a shift in blacks' opinions. It seems that greater exposure to the issue leads to greater opposition. The third term charter change still remains a racially divisive issue. Only …

Management Development And Retention Programs In U.S. Third-Party Logistics Firms, Robert Lorin Cook, Brian J. Gibson Apr 2000

Management Development And Retention Programs In U.S. Third-Party Logistics Firms, Robert Lorin Cook, Brian J. Gibson

Journal of Transportation Management

To provide quality logistics services, it is essential for third-party logistics (3PL) firms to develop an effective human resource program that ensures successful development and retention of qualified managers. By reporting the results of a survey of current U.S. 3PL firm development and retention practices and experiences regarding junior managers, this article provides a benchmark for 3PL firm managers who seek to improve management development and retention programs. Efforts to improve human resource programs should focus on improving orientation programs, mentoring, job enrichment, formal career planning, job relocation assignments, educational support, training and compensation.

Examining America’S Logistics Programs Via The Internet, Joe B. Hanna, William Compton Apr 2000

Examining America’S Logistics Programs Via The Internet, Joe B. Hanna, William Compton

Journal of Transportation Management

This study uses the Internet and a two phase methodology to help gain insight into the current state of America’s logistics programs. Phase I examines logistics program structure while phase II employs a modified, electronic version of the Delphi technique to help examine global logistics education practices. The results of the research indicate that, while key differences exist in America’s logistics programs, academicians of the discipline largely agree on the relative importance of key functional areas of the discipline. However, a potential gap may exist between the skills addressed in logistics and business education programs and the skills required for …

Cheating Via Online Paper Mills In Logistics Education, Kathleen H. Gruben, Cathy Owens Swift, Luther (Trey) Denton Apr 2000

Cheating Via Online Paper Mills In Logistics Education, Kathleen H. Gruben, Cathy Owens Swift, Luther (Trey) Denton

Journal of Transportation Management

The growth of e-business is providing businesses and entrepreneurs the opportunity to develop niches targeting one of the largest groups of Internet users: university students. Unfortunately, one of these niches is online term paper mills, where students can purchase university quality term papers and then submit them in class as their own work. The purpose of this paper is (1) to identify what online term paper services are available; (2) to determine how many logistics term papers are offered by these services; and, (3) to suggest strategies that can be used by logistics faculty to suppress use of these materials.

U.S. And Indonesian Children's Descriptions Of Relational Aggression: Gender, Development And Cultural Comparisons, Elizabeth A. Jansen '00 Apr 2000

U.S. And Indonesian Children's Descriptions Of Relational Aggression: Gender, Development And Cultural Comparisons, Elizabeth A. Jansen '00

Honors Projects

Previous studies of aggression in childhood have found that boys, as a group, are more aggressive than girls. The majority of these studies, however, focus only on physical aggression. Recently several studies have been conducted that differentiate relational aggression from physical aggression. Relational aggression involves harming others through the purposeful damage to their peer relationships (i.e., spreading rumors or ostracizing a peer from a group activity). Several studies have found sex differences in relational aggression, as well as physical aggression. The present study explores gender, developmental, and cultural differences and similarities in relational, physical, and verbal aggression in US and …

Factors Influencing Foreign Direct Investment In Lesser Developed Countries, Jason Lewis '00 Apr 2000

Factors Influencing Foreign Direct Investment In Lesser Developed Countries, Jason Lewis '00

Honors Projects

Net private capital flows to developing countries have dramatically increased in the past 15 years with much of the investment coming in the form of long-term, foreign direct investment. Because of the unique characteristics of this type of growth enhancing investment, developing countries desire to attract and retain foreign direct investment (FDI). As a result, the lesser-developed country (LDC) has an incentive to strengthen areas and aspects of the economy or government that are heavily scrutinized by the firm when considering a possible long-term investment. This study intends to measure the magnitude and the direction of suspected determinants that heavily …

Elector System Design And Ethnic Separatism: A Rationalist Approach To Ethnic Politics In Eastern Europe, Eric Wesselkamper '00

Honors Projects

The resurgence of nationalism taking place throughout Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union raises important questions with respect to ethnic political mobilization, particularly with respect to the potential for ethnic separatism. Moreover, the region provides scholars an excellent setting in which to study the political effects of constitutional choices. This article, utilizing a rationalist approach which emphasizes the cost-benefit calculus of ethnic groups, seeks to analyze the impact of one such constitutional choice, the electoral system. The competing theories regarding the determinants of ethnic separatism are also examined. We find that the most important factor in explaining ethnic separatism …

Economic Currents: The State Of The State Economy, Alan Clayton-Matthews Apr 2000

Economic Currents: The State Of The State Economy, Alan Clayton-Matthews

Public Policy and Public Affairs Faculty Publication Series

The Massachusetts economy continued to create new jobs in 1999, despite tight labor markets. While there were only 1.6 percent more jobs in December 1999 than there were a year earlier, this is an impressive performance, considering that the working-age population has been growing by only one-half of one percent per annum for several years, and the unemployment rate averaged just 3.2 percent for the last two years.
