Law Enforcement Professionalization: The Accreditation Of Law Enforcement, Angel D. Geoghagan
Law Enforcement Professionalization: The Accreditation Of Law Enforcement, Angel D. Geoghagan
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Rapid social change has led many law enforcement agencies to explore various options that would serve to enhance service delivery, department credibility within communities, and overall professionalism. From a historical perspective, professionalism has been an elusive state for law enforcement agencies ever since the inception of the first police department. A search for such professionalism has taken a turn toward accreditation. Accreditation for law enforcement was studied to determine if the process enhanced the perceived level of credibility and professionalism enjoyed by police departments in the southeastern states of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Three hundred …
Depression Status Predicts False Memory On Recognition Tasks, Jamie Lynn L. Shapiro
Depression Status Predicts False Memory On Recognition Tasks, Jamie Lynn L. Shapiro
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
It has long been assumed that depression leads to memory impairment. However, previous research findings have been plagued with inconsistencies in methodology and overall findings. Specifically, there has been some debate over whether or not depressed people are capable of spontaneous strategy use, such as utilizing an associative network/categorical structure. In this study, categorical structure was manipulated using the lists constructed by Deese (1959) and Roediger and McDermott (1995) to examine the false memory paradigm as a function of depression. No differences were found for overall recall or the recall of critical target items as a function of depression. However, …

On The Nature Of Norms: Biology, Morality, And The Disruption Of Order, Owen D. Jones
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
This essay discusses the legal implications of bio-behavioral underpinnings to norms, morality, and economic order. It first discusses the recent book "The Great Disruption: Human Nature and the Reconstitution of Social Order," in which Francis Fukuyama explores the importance of evolved human nature to the reconstruction of social order and a thriving economy. It then addresses the extent to which we can usefully view law-relevant norms as products of evolutionary - as well as economic - processes.

Free To Choose Service Learning, Michael P. Garber, Justin A. Heet
Free To Choose Service Learning, Michael P. Garber, Justin A. Heet
Service Learning, General
Only disciples of Ayn Rand could oppose the idea of service-learning. In the best situations, when service is part of a school's program. students are challenged to define themselves through a larger sense of their community and of their responsibility to it. They have the opportunity to apply their skills to problems that require judgment and leadership. Service-learning, if properly understood, can help re-create the functional communities that renowned University of Chicago sociologist James Coleman wrote about as being vital to increasing the amount of "social capital" generated by schools.
Learning In Deed: Service-Learning And Preservice Teacher Education, Jeffrey B. Anderson
Learning In Deed: Service-Learning And Preservice Teacher Education, Jeffrey B. Anderson
Service Learning, General
Progressive teacher education programs face a pair of daunting yet crucial tasks. New teachers must be prepared to function effectively in schools as they exist today. They also must be educated to take a leadership role in the improvement and restructuring of P-12 education to meet students’ and society’s needs more fully. Service-learning appears to have considerable potential as a method to achieve both these goals.
The W.K. Kellogg Foundation believes that meaningful service to the community, combined with curriculum-based learning, builds stronger academic skills, encourages lifelong civic commitment, and improves workplace and personal development skills among youth. Educators lead …
