Impact Of Employee Performance And Job Status On Perceptions Of Sexual Harassment, Charla Arnold
Impact Of Employee Performance And Job Status On Perceptions Of Sexual Harassment, Charla Arnold
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Once unnoticed and unreported, sexual harassment claims have risen dramatically within the last two decades. Although guidelines published by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 1980 provided a definition of sexual harassment, researchers continue to examine variables affecting individual perceptions of sexual harassment. Contextual factors impacting the labeling of sexual harassment include the type and severity of the harassment, the ambiguity of the sexually harassing behaviors, and gender differences in perceptions of sexual harassment. The present researcher examined the impact of employee performance and employment status on perceptions of sexual harassment. Results indicated that female participants were more likely than …
Place, Disease And Mortality: Trimble County, Kentucky 1849-1894, Nancy Demaree
Place, Disease And Mortality: Trimble County, Kentucky 1849-1894, Nancy Demaree
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This researcher describes the characteristics of place...physical, cultural and human...of a small Kentucky county and looks at the incidence of disease and dying that occurred in that place in the last half of the nineteenth century. The impact of death on particular subsets of the general population was given a closer evaluation. Very young, females and the slave/Black communities were investigated individually. The overall site and situation of all aspects of Trimble County, Kentucky were viewed in an effort to support the notion that it is the manner in which man interacts with this environment that causes disease and death …
Anxiety And Efficacy: Are They Related To Students' Choice Of Major?, Camille Johnson
Anxiety And Efficacy: Are They Related To Students' Choice Of Major?, Camille Johnson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Research suggests that anxiety characteristics play a role in determining the courses students choose in college. Other research suggests that efficacy may play a similar role as well. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between anxiety and efficacy and choice of major for English and mathematics majors. Ninety-nine undergraduate and graduate students from Western Kentucky University (49 males and 50 females) participated in the study. All participants were officially declared mathematics (or mathematics-related, i.e., computer science) or English majors. Instruments included a measure of mathematics anxiety, mathematics efficacy, writing efficacy, writing anxiety, facilitating anxiety, debilitating …
The Effects Of Interviewer Self-Monitoring On Male Appearance Discrimination In Employment Decisions, Charles Mcdowell
The Effects Of Interviewer Self-Monitoring On Male Appearance Discrimination In Employment Decisions, Charles Mcdowell
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This research examined the effects of appearance discrimination toward men as regards employment decisions and the extent to which the degree of interviewer selfmonitoring influences these decisions. Past research has indicated that discrimination does indeed occur for women, but no empirical research has been conducted on male discrimination in which hair length has been manipulated. Specifically, length of hair (shoulder length, approximately 1 inch, and balding) was manipulated for potential job applicants. These conditions were examined across different types of jobs (traditionally conservative, neutral, and traditionally liberal). Several hypotheses are offered, with most focused on the concept that those scoring …
Transformations: A Folkloric Exploration Of The Musical Comedy Into The Woods By Stephen Sondheim And James Lapine, Cara Hoglund
Transformations: A Folkloric Exploration Of The Musical Comedy Into The Woods By Stephen Sondheim And James Lapine, Cara Hoglund
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the use of folktales in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's 1987 award-winning musical Into the Woods. In doing so, I hope to accomplish several directives. First, to enrich understanding of the musical for all audience members, especially those with a folklore or theater background. I feel that understanding the underlying goals and standards that Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine used in creating the musical will provide a much deeper understanding of the genius of their work. I also aim clearly elucidate the merger of folk narrative and popular musical theater form in …
Rights And Culture In The Asian Values Argument: The Rise And Fall Of Confucian Ethics In Singapore, Neil A. Englehart
Rights And Culture In The Asian Values Argument: The Rise And Fall Of Confucian Ethics In Singapore, Neil A. Englehart
Political Science Faculty Publications
The claim that cultural factors such as "Asian Values" really do militate against democracy and human rights is evaluated. The Asian Values claims of the Singapore government--both in its first incarnation, as Confucian Ethics, and its current form, as Shared Values--have actually been advanced for political and ideological reasons and have very little to do with the traditional mores of the population.

Truth Commissions And National Reconciliation: Some Reflections On Theory And Practice, Charles O. Lerche Iii
Peace and Conflict Studies
Excerpt
The “Post-Cold War” world presents staggering contrasts. On the one hand, the threat of annihilation has receded, totalitarianism seems to be in retreat and there is greater interest in such issues as sustainable development, human rights and good governance. On the other hand, however, political and economic instability seem chronic in many regions, and there is a sense of drift both within many countries and at the global level. Prominent on the “new agenda” of world politics is the apparent rising tide of communal conflicts around the planet: a trend which has both positive and negative aspects. Communalism is …
Peace Negotiations And The Dynamics Of The Arab-Israeli Conflict, Amr G.E. Sabet
Peace Negotiations And The Dynamics Of The Arab-Israeli Conflict, Amr G.E. Sabet
Peace and Conflict Studies
Excerpt
The saga of the Middle East ‘peace process’ and the fanfare that has surrounded it, obscured the fact that little has been subjected to detailed systematic and objective analysis. Nor has it been sufficiently put to the test of negotiation principles in a fashion that would shed light on its underlying nature and substance. This caveat hindered addressing important questions regarding the very structure of the process and its ability to deliver on its purported promises. It further raises questions as to whether one could speak of a real peace in the making, or whether the whole endeavor is …

Highlights: Accomplishments Of Portland's Downtown Plan, Central City Plan, Albina Community Plan, Outer Southeast Community Plan, Portland (Or.). Bureau Of Planning
Portland Regional Planning History
All four plans were comprehensive. Their scope included transportation, housing, economic development, parks and open space, natural resources, urban design, and land use. Large scale planning efforts had previously focused on a limited set of concerns, such as parking, commercial revitalization, or housing. The Downtown Plan, Central City Plan, Albina Community Plan, and Outer Southeast Community Plan, on the other hand, evaluated, balanced, and integrated the different elements so that each action was taken in light of its effect on others. Extensive citizen involvement shaped the content of these plans and contributed to their success.
Heritage Tourism And Re-Created Heritage Villages Of The American Midwest: A Geographic Analysis, Royal E. Berglee
Heritage Tourism And Re-Created Heritage Villages Of The American Midwest: A Geographic Analysis, Royal E. Berglee
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
From 1950-1980, the Midwestern United States experienced a sharp decline in the number of farms and a spontaneous emergence of a multitude of re-created heritage villages. Re-created heritage villages are artificial urban entities developed by relocating structures from their original foundations in the wider community to a specific location where they are restored and assembled in the form of a village representing an earlier settlement era. Existing literature indicated a high emphasis upon economic development as a motivation for the creation of similar heritage tourism destinations. This dissertation examined the purpose and motivation for the development of re-created heritage villages …

Ceasefire: The Impact Of Republican Political Culture On The Ceasefire Process In Northern Ireland, Montgomery Sapone
Peace and Conflict Studies
Excerpt
On August 31, 1994, the Provisional IRA (PIRA) declared a cessation of military operations. For the past thirty years, the conflict in Northern Ireland has been raging almost without pause.1 British security forces have attempted to control the violence by establishing road blocks, conducting house searches, altering the judicial system to allow conviction on informant testimony, instituting internment without trial for paramilitary suspects, garrisoning over thirty thousand British soldiers in Northern Ireland, instituting broadcasting bans of Sinn Féin, and conducting intensive interrogation of suspects. Despite the best attempts of the British government over the past few decades to thwart …

Mental Illness And Addiction Disorders And Medicaid Managed Care, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Joel B. Teitelbaum, D. Richard Mauery
Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications
This Special Report on mental illness and addiction disorders is part of Negotiating the New Health System: A Nationwide Study of Medicaid Managed Care Contracts, now in its third edition. Negotiating the New Health System is a nationwide point-in-time study of agreements between state Medicaid agencies and managed care organizations (MCOs) offering general or specialized managed behavioral health care products. Each individual edition of Negotiating the New Health System is a point-in-time study or "snapshot" of these agreements for a particular year. However, the current series of editions, taken together, are beginning to form a longitudinal basis for reviewing the …
Methamphetamine Treatment: A Hermeneutic Study, Sandra S. Hamann
Methamphetamine Treatment: A Hermeneutic Study, Sandra S. Hamann
Theses and Graduate Projects
This hermeneutic study examines and compares the life experiences of three methamphetamine users who have been in chemical dependency treatment for their methamphetamine use. Findings of this researcher indicate that cognitive behavioral practice models have the best results when working with chemical users. There are few chemical dependency treatment programs which address methamphetamine users as needing different treatment approaches than other chemical users. Research indicates that those chemical dependency programs that address the multiple needs of the methamphetamine users and not just their drug use have the best results with helping them maintain long-term recovery from their chemical use. The …
From A Father's Point Of View: A Hermeneutic Study Of Non-Custodial Fathers And The Contributions That They Make To Their Children's Lives, Susan Pohl
Theses and Graduate Projects
This research is a hermeneutic study of three non-custodial fathers and contributions that they make to their children's lives. The literature review explores how children benefit from the presence of their fathers in their lives. The hermeneutic design was used asking the question, "What do you believe are the contributions that you make to your child's life?" The findings reveal that the fathers believe that they are contributing to their children's cognitive development, the development of humor, educational support, social emotional development, and identity. Implications for social work practice and programming are discussed.

The "Tao Te Ching:" A Primer For Developing A Leadership Philosophy, Merilee J. Light
Theses and Graduate Projects
A leader's behavior and actions flow from their values and beliefs. The focus of this thesis is to create a forum where people can explore their beliefs around how to positively influence others when in a position of leadership.
The forum is a three-session study group using a 2,500 year-old book of Chinese philosophy called the "Tao Te Ching." The 5,100-word book of 81 aphorisms provides pearls of wisdom on leadership--using nature as the model. Participants documented their leadership philosophy in session 1 and after reading the "Tao Te Ching" in session 3. Session 1 is an introduction to the …
Treatment Of Separation Anxiety Disorder And School Refusal: A Comprehensive Review Of The Literature, Nicole Petersen
Treatment Of Separation Anxiety Disorder And School Refusal: A Comprehensive Review Of The Literature, Nicole Petersen
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Separation anxiety disorder is a condition in which a child or adolescent experiences severe anxiety when separation from a parent or caregiver is imminent. A possible symptom of separation anxiety disorder or other psychological conditions is that the child may refuse to attend school or run away from school during the day, an occurrence commonly referred to as school refusal. Children with separation anxiety disorder or school refusal may, as a result, be limited in their social and educational opportunities. Therefore, a review of published studies on the treatment of separation anxiety disorder and school refusal was completed. To adequately …
The Relationship Of Human Psychological Characteristics With Athletic Performance, Grant P. Murray
The Relationship Of Human Psychological Characteristics With Athletic Performance, Grant P. Murray
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The purpose of this paper is to report the findings of a literature review summary on the topic of the relationship of human psychological characteristics with athletic performance. Two research questions guided its development: (1) Is there any evidence that there is a relationship between individual human psychological characteristics and athletic performance? (2) If there is any evidence that there is a relationship between individual human psychological characteristics and athletic performance, is there further evidence that those individual characteristics translate in some way into group dynamics or attributes that may similarly influence team performance?
"Wild Men" And Dissenting Voices: Narrative Disruption In Little House On The Prairie, Donna M. Campbell
"Wild Men" And Dissenting Voices: Narrative Disruption In Little House On The Prairie, Donna M. Campbell
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Long considered to be a work celebrating traditional pioneer values, Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie, like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, has in recent years come under increasing attack for its stereotypic racial representations and attitudes. In one notable instance, novelist Michael Dorris describes trying to read the novels to his daughters and stopping because of the unfavorable depictions of Native American characters and Ma's "unreconstructed" bigotry. Dorris and others present a compelling argument about the potential negative effects of such representations, yet to dismiss the work as though Wilder's vision of other races represents a …

Citizenship And Treaty Rights: The Indian Association Of Alberta And The Canadian Indian Act, 1946-1948, Laurie Meijer Drees
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In the spring of 1946, J. Allison Glen announced a public inquiry into Canada's federal administration of Indian Affairs and the Indian Act. In Parliament on 13 May 1946 this minister of Mines and Resources responsible for Indian Affairs moved "That a joint committee of the senate and house of commons be appointed to examine and consider the Indian Act ... with authority to investigate and report upon Indian administration in general" including treaty rights, band membership, enfranchisement of Indians, Indian schools, and "any other matter or thing pertaining to the social and economic status of Indians and their advancement."! …

"Going To Indian Territory": Attitudes Toward Native Americans In Little House On The Prairie, Philip Heldrich
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Since its first printing in 1935, Little House on the Prairie has been a perennial favorite among countless readers. The Little House series itself ranks consistently as one of the most commercially popular of all times. However, Little House on the Prairie, the second book in the series, has become the center of numerous controversies. Yellow Medicine East School District, in Granite, Minnesota, which serves a portion of the Upper Sioux Community of that region, stopped class reading of the book, citing disgust with the text's portrayals of Native Americans. Such action follows a similar banning of the text …
Little Squatter On The Osage Diminished Reserve: Reading Laura Ingalls Wilder's Kansas Indians, Frances W. Kaye
Little Squatter On The Osage Diminished Reserve: Reading Laura Ingalls Wilder's Kansas Indians, Frances W. Kaye
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Laura Ingalls Wilder was a person of her time and place. She fictionalized her memories to give what she honestly believed was the truest possible account-true in deeply human ways as well as in accurate details-of one family's settlement history on the Great Plains frontier. I have never really liked her work. While my sister read all the Little House books, I read ... Zane Grey. That I do not share Wilder's values and point of view is no argument against the books-I do not share Zane Grey's values and point of view, either. But Zane Grey is not held …

Uncleared Homicides: A Canada/United States Comparison, Wendy C. Regoeczi, Leslie W. Kennedy, Robert A. Silverman
Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications
Beginning in the 1960s, there has been a marked decline in clearance rates of homicides, a finding that has generated little interest among criminological researchers. This article presents a comparative analysis of homicide clearance in Canada and the United States using data generated by the Canadian Centre of Justice Statistics and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation's Supplementary Homicide Reports. Using logistic regression, homicide clearance is predicted on the basis of specific victim and offense characteristics for cases in Canada versus the United States and in Ontario versus New York State. The results indicate that the model is a good …
