Effects Of Short-Term Service Ministry Trips On The Development Of Social Responsibility In College Students, Sarah Mott Hopkins
Effects Of Short-Term Service Ministry Trips On The Development Of Social Responsibility In College Students, Sarah Mott Hopkins
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
This study investigated the impact of service ministry trips on the development of social responsibility in college students at a small Quaker liberal arts university in the Pacific Northwest. Students (50 female, 14 male) who participated on 5 different short-term service ministry trips served as the service ministry group, while students (23 females, 13 males) in a general psychology class served as the control group. Over three administrations of the Global Social Responsibility Inventory, (Starrett 1996) students provided responses that offered support for service ministry trips as a method of increasing a sense of social responsibility in college students. The Future Of Regional Integration In Latin America, Cindy Rosales Bush
The Future Of Regional Integration In Latin America, Cindy Rosales Bush
Electronic Dissertations and Theses
Commonalties in language, religion, history, politics and economics have retained positive ties between the nations of Latin America. However, in lieu of the transnational problems that the region is facing in the areas of the environment, drugs and hunger, mere cultural and historical commonalties will not be enough to establish the regional cooperation desperately needed in Latin America to procure its economic future . Many organizations have thus been created to further cooperation and integration in the region. These initiatives, however, lack certain characteristics needed for successful regional integration. Moreover, a specific initiative, the FT AA spear headed by the …

Black Entertainment Television And Music Television : A Comparative Study Of Minority Portrayal In Television Commercials And Their Societal Implications, Shomari M. Harris
Electronic Dissertations and Theses
This paper is a qualitative and quantitative study of minority representation in commercial advertisement on Black Entertainment Television and Music Television. A content analysis of 200 commercials airing June 21, 1999, through July 2, 1999, between 4:00 5:00p.m. revealed that as the target audience changes, so does commercial type, the frequency of minority appearance and the role of the minority commercial. For the purpose of content analysis, individuals in each commercial were coded by ethnicity. Each commercial was classified by type and placed in one of ten categories. Differences in factors such as commercial type and commercial frequency were used …
Self-Objectification: Cognitive Effects And Ethnic Differences, Sunni D. Jones
Self-Objectification: Cognitive Effects And Ethnic Differences, Sunni D. Jones
Electronic Dissertations and Theses
Objectification Theory (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997) posits that because American culture objectifies women's bodies (e.g., through visual mass media), girls and women are socialized to self-objectify. Self-Objectification is manifest by internalization of the observer's perspective. According to objectification theory, self-objectification has a variety of emotional and cognitive consequences, including increased shame and anxiety and diminished cognitive resources which can lead to diminished cognitive performance. A prior experiment demonstrated that states of self-objectification diminished performance on a stroop color-naming task supporting the prediction about cognitive performance. The current research was conducted to test whether mental suppression of self-objectifying thoughts accounted for …

Cultural And Developmental Comparisons Of Landscape Perceptions And Preferences, Thomas R. Herzog, Eugene J. Herbert, Rachel Kaplan, C. L. Crooks
Cultural And Developmental Comparisons Of Landscape Perceptions And Preferences, Thomas R. Herzog, Eugene J. Herbert, Rachel Kaplan, C. L. Crooks
Peer Reviewed Articles
The authors compared several Australian subgroups and American college students on their preferences for Australian natural landscapes. Preference correlations across groups were generally high, with the correlations for Australian adults somewhat lower. Factor analysis yielded six perceptual categories: Vegetation, Open Smooth, Open Coarse, Rivers, Agrarian, and Structures. Both the Australian and American samples liked Rivers best and the Open categories least. Only the Australians included willow trees in the Agrarian category. The Australians liked the settings overall better than the Americans. Among the Australians, primary students liked the settings most, secondary students least; aboriginal college students liked the settings better …

The Antecedents Of Organized Criminality In Kentucky, Gary W. Potter
The Antecedents Of Organized Criminality In Kentucky, Gary W. Potter
Kentucky Justice and Safety Research Bulletin
This Kentucky Justice & Safety Research Bulletin examines the antecedents of modern-day organized crime in Kentucky. The question to be addressed is whether the genesis of organized crime in a predominately rural, southern state, such as Kentucky, follows well-established patterns of development found in historically analyses of Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, and other north-eastern and midwestern locales. This question is addressed by an examination of primary and secondary historical data sources relevant to early forms of organized crime. The research concludes that while Kentucky exhibited strikingly different forms of economic, socal and political organization compared to northeastern and midwestern locales, …

Local Properties Of Query Languages, Guozhu Dong, Leonid Libkin, Limsoon Wong
Kno.e.sis Publications
In this paper we study the expressiveness of local queries. By locality we mean — informally — that in order to check if a tuple belongs to the result of a query, one only has to look at a certain predetermined portion of the input. Examples include all relational calculus queries. We start by proving a general result describing outputs of local queries. This result leads to many easy inexpressibility proofs for local queries. We then consider a closely related property, namely, the bounded degree property. It describes the outputs of local queries on structures that locally look “simple.” Every …

Government Expenditures And Equilibrium Real Exchange Rates, Ronald J. Balvers, Jeffrey H. Bergstrand
Government Expenditures And Equilibrium Real Exchange Rates, Ronald J. Balvers, Jeffrey H. Bergstrand
Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series
Economists have long investigated theoretically and empirically the relationship between government spending and equilibrium real exchange rates. As Frenkel and Razin (1996) summarize for a small open economy, government expenditures (financed by lump-sum taxes) influence real exchange rates via a resource-withdrawal channel and a consumption-tilting channel. Recent theoretical and empirical studies, such as Froot and Rogoff (1991), Rogoff (1992), De Gregorio, Giovannini, and Krueger (1994), De Gregorio, Giovannini, and Wolf (1994), De Gregorio and Wolf (1994), and Chinn and Johnston (1996), have focused only upon the effects of government spending through the resource-withdrawal channel. Extending Frenkel and Razin (1996), this …
