Genetic susceptibility testing for breast and ovarian cancer is an important new tool for assessing cancer risk, one that may facilitate early detection and reduction of cancer risk. The collapse of the Soviet Union gave the unexpected gift of independence in 1991 to five new states in Central Asia-Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. In common with other post-socialist countries, these states are currently going through a transition period characterized by serious and worsening social and economic problems. The 55 million people who live in the region are facing problems of overpopulation, a chronic decline in living standards, and ecological crisis. The Ability Of The Children's Category Test To Discriminate From Non-Ld Students, Ages 9 To 14, Donald E. Worth

This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Children's Category Test (CCT) in identifying LD children between the ages 9 and 14. Fifty-seven children were involved in the study: 27 with a previous diagnosis of LD and 29 with no diagnosis. All subjects were tested with the WISC-III and found to have an IQ no less than 80 and no higher than 120. The CCT was administered to all 57 children and their error scores on each subtest and total scores were calculated. None of the means of any of the scores for the LD and control groups were found to …

The Benton Visual Retention Test With Ld And Non-Ld Children, 9 Years To 16, Jessica Workman

The purpose of this study is to determine whether the Benton Visual Retention Test (BVRT) can discriminate between learning disabled students and non-learning disabled students. Subjects ranged from ages 9 through 16 in both groups. The control group consisted of 30 subjects with an IQ score of 80 to 120 as measured by the WISC-ID, no history of physical or emotional problems, and scores equivalent with IQ on the achievement test as measured by the WIAT. The LD group consisted of30 subjects which had a I. 75 discrepancy between scores on the WISC-ID and the WIAT. All subjects were given …

Spring snow storms can influence migration chronology and nutrient-reserve dynamics of waterfowl in Nebraska.
For centuries, the Rainwater Basin and Platte River Valley of central Nebraska have attracted millions of migrating waterfowl during spring. While in this region, females begin to accumulate fat and protein reserves needed for egg-laying and for recruitment of young.

Time-Variant Institutions: Implications For European Unemployment, Nathaniel Stankard

The upward trend of European unemployment begs many questions, the most basic of which is why unemployment continues to climb after twenty-five years. Adverse shocks, rigid labor market institutions, and their interaction are used to explain this persistence and the differences in individual country experiences.

While these models do indeed answer both questions to some extent, they assume that institutions predate the rise in unemployment, often treating them as static. By compiling extant data series and constructing my own, I find that this assumption is weak, and that the evolution of institutions is far from static.

This paper represents an attempt to bring together information from the existing literature that, when combined, could form a basic framework of thought and application for counselors who wish to integrate spirituality into mental health counseling. As mental health counseling students or more seasoned professionals consider this information, they may choose to take practical ideas into their work with clients, or at least become more involved in further reading and research on the topic. The paper concludes with a presentation of ethical issues that specifically relate to the integration of spirituality into the traditional mental health counseling paradigm.

On first reading this group of articles on the international archival scene, I was struck by the degree to which advances in technology and changes in attitudes about professionalism have affected our profession over the past twenty years. Back in 1968, at my first archives job, my institution felt fortunate to have acquired IBM Selectric typewriters for the staff. Connections to the international archival community were limited to the privileged few, primarily at the National Archives, with travel budgets large enough to allow them to participate in international conferences or to visit institutions abroad.

The Wisconsin dairy industry has seen dramatic changes over the last 20 years (Jackson- Smith and Barham, 2000). Overall, dairy farm numbers have been cut in half since the early 1980s, and the average size of remaining herds has increased by more than 60 percent (from roughly 40 cows to over 65 cows per herd). Despite these changes, most dairies are still single-family businesses, relying on household members for virtually all their farm labor requirements (Buttel et al., 2000). Excessive phosphorus loading has been identified as the primary cause of decreasing water quality in Lake Champlain. Dairy farms are the major source of phosphorus pollution to the lake and are targeted to reduce phosphorus run-off. The goal of this research is to determine the farm-level financial impact of phosphorus management on different sizes of Vermont dairy farms. Farm financial performance following implementation of manure management is simulated by farm size (60 cows, 150 cows, and 350 cows) over a ten-year time horizon using the Farm Level Income and Policy Simulation Modeling System (FLIPSim). Well-made turquoise beads are rare in North American archaeological sites, and the prehistoric sources of turquoise are limited. Mining the turquoise, manufacturing the bead, and using it as part of a bracelet or necklace involve numerous human interactions to transport the raw material from its source to the place where it is finally found in an archaeological context. Accurate identification of turquoise sources affects our interpretation of prehistoric behavior and is the focus of this paper.

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

The unique and memorable design of man-in-the-moon beads has intrigued researchers over the years. These distinctive beads were identified in the 1960s by George Quimby as being chronologically diagnostic of Middle Historic Period sites (1670-1760) in the western Great Lakes region. The present study more clearly defines both the temporal and geographical instances of man-in-the-moon beads while taking into account possible cultural and historical implications. This project has led to the compilation of information regarding many specimens previously unknown to most researchers.

Emerging research suggests that alcohol, tobacco and drug-related problems may be higher in lesbian and gay communities than in the population as a whole. At the same time, alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceutical industries have increased marketing strategies that are targeted specifically to lesbian and gay communities. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) and HTV/AIDS organizations, often marginalized and under-funded, have frequently faced significant challenges in funding programs and special events. These organizations are often the very same groups needed to promote and support effective substance abuse countermeasures in LGBT communities. This paper describes a unique approach to project management education. MBA students enrolled in a project management course have been renovating homes for low income senior citizens. Concurrent with instruction and project planning and control methods, students must communicate with the customer, plan tasks, coordinate schedules, procure materials, learn construction skills, perform physical labor and track project progress. Reflection activities ensure that students see the broadly applicable metaphors that emerge from the experience. Results indicate that a community service project can provide a powerful learning vehicle. Evidence from similar programs run through corporations suggests that this approach is suited to …
