Exception Handling In Workflow Systems, Zongwei Luo, Amit P. Sheth, Krzysztof J. Kochut, John A. Miller

In this paper, defeasible workflow is proposed as a framework to support exception handling for workflow management. By using the “justified” ECA rules to capture more contexts in workflow modeling, defeasible workflow uses context dependent reasoning to enhance the exception handling capability of workflow management systems. In particular, this limits possible alternative exception handler candidates in dealing with exceptional situations. Furthermore, a case-based reasoning (CBR) mechanism with integrated human involvement is used to improve the exception handling capabilities. Modern intensive farming conditions lack the diversity of substrates present in more natural environments and offer young animals fewer opportunities for interaction. Evidence exists that this may affect the organization of interactive patterns of behaviour, but shifts in behavioural diversity have not been measured directly. We investigated the effect of the substrate in the home pen on the diversity of behaviour in young growing pigs, Sus scrofa. Over 5 months, 26 pigs were housed singly in either substrate-impoverished (SI) or substrate-enriched (SE) conditions. Precision agriculture is already being used commercially to improve variability management in row crop agriculture. In the same way, understanding how spatial and temporal variability of animal, forage, soil and landscape features affect grazing behavior and forage utilization provides potential to modify pasture management, improve efficiency of utilization, and maximize profits. Recent advances in global positioning system (GPS) technology have allowed the development of lightweight GPS collar receivers suitable for monitoring animal position at 5-min intervals. This disc presents in electronic form the complete catalog of the collection of 19th- and 20th-century art in the Nationalgalerie Berlin. While the Nationalgalerie's collection shows a predictable emphasis on German artists, it includes a wide variety of other European artists as well. Pacific Islander Pastors And Missionaries: Some Historiographical And Analytical Issues, Doug Munro, Andrew Thornley

Pacific Studies

In global terms, the deployment of indigenous pastors and their equivalents in the dissemination of Christianity was unusual. A notable exception was in the Pacific Islands, where the widespread use of native teachers and preachers was a feature of the missionization process. Their role was not adequately reflected in the historiography of the region until the publication of Ron and Marjorie Crocombes’ seminal book The Works of Ta‘unga in 1968. The Crocombes inspired an outpouring of research on pastors and teachers, which this article describes, categorizes, and assesses. The article concludes with suggestions for further research.

By the late twentieth century, small island states in the Pacific faced severe problems resulting from the ways in which they had become integrated into the world capitalist economy since the early nineteenth century. Generic environmental, economic, and social problems follow from dependence on the production of a relatively small number of crops for sale in the world economy, out-migration and remittances, and foreign aid. Most states have sought to reduce their dependence and to move toward greater degrees of economic self-sufficiency. Westminster Democracy: A Comparison Of Small Island States Varieties In The Pacific And The Caribbean, Dag Anckar

The validity of the suggestion by Arend Lijphart that the structure of consensus democracy may spring from a general cultural inclination toward consensus is investigated by comparing a set of small Pacific and Caribbean island states. All have colonial histories that involve a strong British legacy, and all have been submitted to attempts by the metropolitan power to influence the preparing of the independence constitution. The results indicate that the Pacific islands with long-standing indigenous and consensual cultures and traditions have indeed introduced into their political systems more consensus-based applications of Westminster rule.
