Fees For Information Services To Hospitals: A California Experience, Lawrence W. Onsager, George V. Summers Phd

Faculty Publications

The project was directed toward planning, developing, and implementing a subregional biomedical information network among the forty-three health care facilities (hospitals) of the four-county area served by Loma Linda University's health sciences library. The project coordinator contacted administrators and health care professionals in the forty-three institutions to present a plan for the network. The health care facilities were encouraged to support the continuation of the network through contract fees. The availability of specific information services was assured through contractual agreements. It was anticipated that the subregional network would be self-supporting after the twelve-month project period (December 1, 1976-November 30, 1977). …

Locus Of Control, Knowledge Of Ethics, And Perceived Ethicality As Influenced By An Authority Figure, F. Matthew Mihelic, William G. Connolly May 1978

Locus Of Control, Knowledge Of Ethics, And Perceived Ethicality As Influenced By An Authority Figure, F. Matthew Mihelic, William G. Connolly

Faculty Publications

The present study investigated the relationship between a subject's locus of control, knowledge of psychological ethical research principles, and perceived ethicality of a psychological research proposal as influenced by an authority figure. Subjects were asked to judge the ethicality of a research proposal, which half were led to believe had been previously deemed unethical by an authority figure. No mention was made of the authority figure's viewpoint to the other subjects. The major finding was that the variability in ratings in ethicality of the research proposal tended to diminished from the no mention to the rejection manipulation in those of …

National Integration And Disintegration: The Southern Sudan, Richard A. Lobban Mar 1978

National Integration And Disintegration: The Southern Sudan, Richard A. Lobban

Faculty Publications

The southern Sudan has been torn by internal and external struggles for most of its long history. The area has seldom been unified by its own leaders or by those seeking to impose their rule upon the southerners. One of the greatest experiments in national integration is now underway in that region. Certain progress has been made, but much remains to be done. The struggle for national integration in the huge and underdeveloped Sudan is very difficult, with ethnic and geographical factors weighing heavily. The problem has been complicated by the deep roots of national division planted by British colonialism …

Issues Affecting The Availability And Price Of Land For Agriculture, B. Delworth Gardner Jan 1978

Issues Affecting The Availability And Price Of Land For Agriculture, B. Delworth Gardner

Faculty Publications

This paper first reviews some data relating to agricultural land use nationally and then discusses the huge increases in land prices that have occurred in recent years and some of the implications for agriculture. The final section evaluates the need for public policy to preserve prime lands for agricultural use.

American Mercenaries In Rhodesia, Richard A. Lobban

Faculty Publications

In rather well documented literature the United States' Central Intelligence Agency hired significant numbers of American and British nationals, to mention only the most important, to fight against the victorious Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola. It happens that a similar pattern of recruitment is now underway in Rhodesia although this has not received much attention in the Western press.

Some Issues In Teaching Agricultural Economics To Foreign Graduate Students, B. Gardner Delworth Jul 1977

Some Issues In Teaching Agricultural Economics To Foreign Graduate Students, B. Gardner Delworth

Faculty Publications

Several words in the title help set the scope of the paper. My concern is with the training of students from foreign countries, generally those best characterized as less developed countries (LCD's). These students come to the United States to be trained as professional economists and I assume will spend a career researching problems related to agriculture.

Network Characteristics In Suburbanizing Streams, William L. Graf Jan 1977

Network Characteristics In Suburbanizing Streams, William L. Graf

Faculty Publications

Analysis of hydrologic, geomorphic, and suburbanization data from a small instrumented drainage basin near Iowa City, Iowa, indicates that channel networks are radically altered when suburban development overtakes a drainage basin. Changes in channel networks are such that the network becomes much more efficient in collecting water quickly, so that lag time and kurtosis of storm hydrographs are altered to produce the familiar flash floods of urban areas. The data show that network changes are closely associated with lag time and kurtosis of storm hydrographs and suggest that corrective measures should be concentrated on the internal links of the network. …

Why Busing Plans Work, John A. Finger Jr. May 1976

Why Busing Plans Work, John A. Finger Jr.

Faculty Publications

The year 1975 has seen a rising opposition to busing for school integration. Advocates of busing are placed in the position of defending the initiation and continuation of busing. Those opposed to busing can have their opposition widely accepted despite the complete lack of analysis of the consequences. Historical injustices against Blacks and minorities are widely known, but much of the public seems unaware of or unconcerned about present injustices and the official acts of discrimination which are still perpetuated.

"Tribe": A Socio-Political Analysis, Richard A. Lobban Jr., Carolyn Fluehr-Lobban, Linda Zangari Jan 1976

"Tribe": A Socio-Political Analysis, Richard A. Lobban Jr., Carolyn Fluehr-Lobban, Linda Zangari

Faculty Publications

In 1974 we authored an essay entitled "Tribe and Tribalism" which recommended that the term "tribe" be dropped from scientific usage by anthropologists because of its pejorative connotations associated with non-European peoples and because the term is arbitrarily, rather than systematically applied.

Increasing numbers of scholars are putting quotation marks around the word "tribe" or are using the phrase "the so-called tribal societies." Still others are presenting a critical review of the term "tribe" before abandoning it or using it in the text in modified or altered form. The term "primitive" has undergone a similar evolution in recent years.

Cirques As Glacier Locations, William L. Graf Jan 1976

Cirques As Glacier Locations, William L. Graf

Faculty Publications

A comparison between the 319 cirques that contain glaciers and a sample of 240 empty cirques in the Rocky Mountains shows that in the present climatic situation, landforms are strong factors in determining the locations of glaciers. An optimum glacier location is a large cirque facing northeast, with a planimetric shape of width greater than length, high steep walls, a pass located to the windward, and a peak to the southwest. Glaciers survive in the present climatic conditions because of a geomorphic feedback system, whereby glaciers are protected by cirque forms that owe their morphology to glacial processes.
