Diagnostic Considerations In The Identification Of The Hyperactive Child, Barbara Jagoda Draheim May 1981

Diagnostic Considerations In The Identification Of The Hyperactive Child, Barbara Jagoda Draheim

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The hyperactive disorder of childhood and the enumeration of its features were described in two papers published in the mid-1950's, by Laufer and his colleagues (Laufer, 1957; Laufer, Denhoff & Solomons, 1956). It was a list that has since become familiar; short attention span, impulsivity, irritability, low frustration tolerance, poor academic achievement, and visual-motor difficulties. Like many who have since searched for definers of the syndrome, Laufer and his colleagues remarked upon the perplexing variability displayed by these children, and they noted that no single symptom could be considered diagnostic. They described the development of "secondary psychological difficulties" due to …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

"It is said to be the largest unrecognized minority group in America, but it has no lobbying efforts, central organization or focus. The group is singles - divorced, widowed or never married - and there is an estimated l 190,000 of them in Kansas City Area." One out of every three adults in the United States is single. That is 43 million. Yet in spite of their great numbers, single people find that social pressures still call for "settling down" and raising a family.

Criteria For The Selection Of Students Into A Counseling Program: A Review Of Literature, Douglas N. Reeder

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In his paper, "Graduate Education in Psychology - A Passionate Statement" Carl Rogers (1957) has stated, 'We are doing an unintelligent, ineffectual and wasteful job of preparing psychologists, to the detriment of our discipline and society. “” He further stated, 'We should be selecting and training individuals for creative effectiveness in seeking out and discovering the significant new knowledge which is meeded." He then examines ten implicit assumptions on which programs of graduate education appear to be based, showing them to be totally inadequate in training future psychologists. It is time to reevaluate the purpose, procedure, and content of graduate …

Management Studies: Roosevelt City Fire Department And Vehicle Maintenance Division, Roosevelt, Utah, Rendal D. Esplin

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The recent and rapid development of energy producing natural resources experienced in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming has created major growth problems for roosevelt City as well as all other political subdivisions located within the region. Emphasis on efficient management of public programs has been one of several methods utilized by Roosevelt City to meet the growing demand for municipal services. This is necessary as some services such as fire protection, are managed jointly with other municipalities. Then too, with inflation driving up operating costs, it is essential to carefully control expenditures of all public programs. The management studies conducted on …

Utah And School Age Parents, Willa C. Hurd May 1975

Utah And School Age Parents, Willa C. Hurd

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Background. As Dean of Women in a small high school for the past three years, I have been frustrated because of the fact that there was no program for married and/or pregnant students that would educationally aid them.

Night high school courses are not, in my opinion, "equal education; " I felt the need for a definite program. The school district is both legally and morally responsible to provide educational opportunities to these students .

Justification. In 1970 an estimated 200,000 American girls under 18 gave birth. Nearly two-thirds of the girls had married by the time of delivery (Pregnant …

Facilitating Effective Communication Between Foreigners And Americans At Utah State University, Aruneeprabha Homsettee

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

As one of the foreign students in this country, I have had a lot of problems while studying here. For example , how should I express myself, how should I behave when going to an American party and participating in other traditional occasions such as Halloween, Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc. Also, how can I learn about Americans' activities and manners? Some of them I can solve by learning from others or by myself. Many Americans have trouble when communicating with foreigners. They try hard, but they often do not understand each other.

Information from both Americans and foreigners indicates that if …

Description And Research Study Of Four Effective Teaching Methods, Gail Ryan May 1975

Description And Research Study Of Four Effective Teaching Methods, Gail Ryan

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

During my years in the public school system, I have felt that a basic deterrent to the child's personal and emotional growth has been the inability of educators to effectively communicate with children in the classroom. Gordon (1970, p. 298) states that teachers and other adults "lack the basic attitudes and skills to be effective training agents in an interpersonal relationship with a child or adolescent." Flanders (1971) feels that teachers, while behaviorally influencing children and determining the learning situation, actually have little knowledge about those methods of influence.

I am concerned with the need to train teachers to work …

The Recreational Use Of Irrigation Canals: Logan City Canals As A Case Study, William R. Gast Jr. May 1975

The Recreational Use Of Irrigation Canals: Logan City Canals As A Case Study, William R. Gast Jr.

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Irrigation plays a major role in Utah and other arid regions of the West. Canals transporting water from lakes, rivers and reservoires have converted millions of acres of marginal land to rich productive sites and are the lifeblood of western agriculture. These canals are common ingredient in the landscape and life styles of most communities of the state. Cache valley, Utah is one example of an area which has flourished with the use of irrigation canals diverted from the Logan River.

The growth of urban populations and demand for outdoor activities has created need for more local parks and recreation. …

It is hoped that this will help staff members to better understand the beliefs, fears, and emotional turmoils of the students with whom they are working and, thereby, be able to deal with them in a more knowledgeable and understanding manner.

The information presented …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In the settlement of the West, the Mormon response was unique. since their methods, techniques, and institutions differed from other settlers of the West, the Mormons were repeatedly censured by outsiders. Although the institution of polygamy elicited considerable emotionalism and aroused determined opposition, there were other institutions which actually contributed just as much to the conflagration.

As the Utah War [1857-58] became an embarrassment to the United States government, congress demanded of President Buchanan the grounds upon which the decision for war was based. President Buchanan thereupon presented several letters, the first of which was written on October 3, 1856, …

The Changing Role Of The Secondary Counselor In Career Guidance, Norman D. Devries May 1971

The Changing Role Of The Secondary Counselor In Career Guidance, Norman D. Devries

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Work can be viewed as man's aim in life, or as his instrument to achieve other goals. Whatever the view, it is wrong to allow the vagueness and error that many individuals frequently face when choosing a career. If we are going to meet this demand, it will be necessary to make vocational guidance available to all those who are making or will make a vocation choice.

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The purpose of this study is to analyze the physical and cultural relationships which does nOW and has existed between the Ute Mountain Utes, presently located in southwestern Colorado , and their land base through time . This is especially interesting in relation to the Ute Mountain Utes as they originally were considered to be one of the most poorly endowed of the American Indians, but through a series of fortuitous events closely related to their land they are now considered to be the second wealthiest Indian tribe in the United States (Dutton, 1965, p . 6?) .

A Self-Instructional Program For The Technical Services Of The Utah State University Library, Heber Clark Barzee

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Self-instructional carrels and accompanying programs are being utilized successfully in numerous areas of education . In the field of Library Science the potential is especially great because of the skills and knowledge that can be conveyed in an individualized learning situation. To date in the USU Library, this concept has not been applied. Distinct possibilities exist in the various areas of the Library. The Technical Services of the Library or that area where materials are ordered, received, and prepared for the patron's use, lends itself particularly to self-instruction. The work accomplished in Technical Services is not understood by students, patrons, …

The Utah Black Hawk War 1865-1871, Deloy J. Spencer

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

From 1865 until 1871 the Territory of Utah was the scene of a little-known war. The Ute and Piute Indians responding to pressure of white settlers devastated much of Utah south of Spanish Fork. During the first three years of warfare the Mormon Settlements south of the Utah Valley struggled to exist. The next three years saw improving conditions but a continuation of raids by the Navaho in the south.

This was a private war. Attempts to get government aid were futile. The settlers and the Mormon Church provided the men and equipment necessary. While the problems faced by the …

Ideal Family Size And Acceptable Contraceptive Devices: A Study Of L.D.S. Student Attitudes At Utah State University, Robert Ray Weber

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This study was undertaken because of the seemingly large families of the Mormons in Logan, Utah. Until this year I had never been in an area where Mormons made up a significant proportion of the population and had not realized the apparent difference in family size when compared to non-Mormons.

As a member of the Experienced Teacher Fellowship Program, I also had occasion to take two classes in Marriage and Family in the Family Life College at the University, and this also stirred my interest in the subject.

In the process of reviewing the literature on family size (fertility) and …

A Review And Construction Of Career Development Programs In The Elementary School, Chase Driggs May 1969

A Review And Construction Of Career Development Programs In The Elementary School, Chase Driggs

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Overview

Every child has a right to acquire his own realistic selfevaluation of the career he intends to pursue, and the process of exposure to occupational information should be permitted and encouraged to start at an early age. From this point of view we need to foster concepts and techniques designed to facilitate the vocational maturation of the child. Interaction with counselors, teachers, parents, and community will increase the student's ability to understand the opportunities of the world of work as it relates to his aptitudes and interests and values and to enable him to be more aware of the …

Teaching Experience: A Prerequisite For Effective Counselor Performance?, Carole G. Sorensen May 1969

Teaching Experience: A Prerequisite For Effective Counselor Performance?, Carole G. Sorensen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Purpose of the study

Previous teaching experience is one of the most discussed issues in today's pupil personnel services. We find ourselves in the milieu of a controversy in which we have advocates of one camp who propose that teaching experience can be a handicap in the effectiveness of a counselor; and in the other camp, that teaching experience is a vital prerequisite for counselor effectiveness.

The controversy has reached such proportions that some states, which previously held teaching experience as a necessary requirement for counselor certification, have either changed certification requirements or have worked around the issue by accepting …

Learning Theory As Applied To The Counseling Process, Melvin H. Larsen May 1968

Learning Theory As Applied To The Counseling Process, Melvin H. Larsen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The literature contains much about learning. But, what do we mean by learning?

Learning is the process by which an activity originates or is changed through reacting to an encountered situation, provided that the characteristics of the change in activity cannot be explained on the basis of native response tendencies, maturation, or temporary states of the organism (e.g., fatigue, drugs, etc.). (Hilgard, 1966, p. 2)

Effective counseling requires that the client learn. Even though client learning is essential to effective counseling, relatively little has been done to relate learning theory to the counseling process. Significant work in this direction has …

Interest As A Factor In Vocational Choice, Leland J. Smith

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

As the complexities of modern life increase, greater caution has to be exercised in the selection of an appropriate vocational choice. Norris, Zeran and Hatch (1960, p. 5) state, "The dramatic changes which have taken place in the world during the past twenty-five years have created new demands on the training programs which furnish the skilled leaders in all vocational pursuits." The foregoing statement certainly points out the vocational implications of our changing society. Mortensen and Schmuller (1951, p. 199) report, "The entire area of interests is today receiving added emphasis." The study of interest continues to occupy an important …

Negro Historiography With Special Emphasis On Negro Historians Of The New School, Ella D. Lewis Douglas May 1968

Negro Historiography With Special Emphasis On Negro Historians Of The New School, Ella D. Lewis Douglas

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Except for an occasional Nat Turner, Booker T. Washington, or George W. Carver, the Negro as a person is missing from the textbooks from which the millions learn their history. The race has bulked large as a theme in American historiography, but such treatment has been largely preoccupied with Negroes en masse and as a "problem," and has rarely extended to individual, creative Negroes and their contributions to American society. It may be supposed that white, college-bred Americans can identify very few of the most celebrated Negroes who attained prominence of some sort before World War I.

The Attitudes Of Logan City, Utah Toward Ethnic Minority Groups With Special Emphasis On The Negro, Ella D. Lewis Douglas

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

One major purpose of the research conducted by human relations agencies has been to determine the correlates of prejudice. The analysis of data has persistently aimed at identifying those groups within the population among whom the incidence of prejudice is higher. If such groups can be identified, programs to reduce prejudice can be designed especially for them. However, there is a strong feeling in the American society that certain groups, in the population are congenitally inferior to others. These are the ethnic minority groups, such as the Negro, the Spanish-American, the Oriental, the Jew, and the American Indian. Such a …

The Effects Of Paternal Absence On Male Children, Martha H. Rigby May 1968

The Effects Of Paternal Absence On Male Children, Martha H. Rigby

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The society in which our children are living and growing today is complicated by strife and conflict both internally and externally . It is a time when statisticians are telling us that 481 out of 1,000 marriages, or nearly one out of every four, will end in divorce; many others will end in separations not legally terminated (Bureau of Census, 1966). Many families are also separated because of the military action which at present is keeping 500,000 men at war in a country many thousands of miles from their families. During the year 1967 over nine thousand of this number …

The Establishment And First Six Months Of The Civilian Conservation Corps And Joe Hill, Wobbly Martyr Of Utah, Clifford G. O'Harrow

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

One of the most generally admired New Deal Agencies reflected the fact that Franklin D. Roosevelt, like his cousin Theodore was an ardent conservationist. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) by providing job relief to the people. However, most of the work was carried on in the more remote areas of the states and thus escaped day to day scrutiny. The completed conservation tasks were to stand as proof of accomplishment. Most histories dismiss the CCC with a paragraph and perhaps a picture of some boys planting trees; however, 2,400,000 young men and 145,000 war veterans served in camps of the …
