Nexus Literary Journal

Nexus is a magazine that began as an insert in the Wright State Guardian student newspaper in 1965 and has since been published semi-regularly. It began only accepting creative writing, but has since expanded to include illustrations, photography and other non-written art forms. Today, it is published in a digital format and accepts submissions from around the country, though it maintains its commitment to the Wright State Community.

The winter and spring of 2018 certainly delivered a reminder to librarians and archivists about potential weather-related disasters in the workplace, and within our home collections. My last column focused on practical tips to prepare for and handle emergencies. Now we will focus on creating a disaster plan. If your institution does not have a plan in place, or if the plan has not been updated in three or more years, this is an excellent time to get to work.

Seminars in Local and Global Regional Economies

The prevalence of "vertical specialization" and global value chains (GVCs) demands that we think differently about international trade and its relationship to employment. This talk discusses employment effects of GVCs trade. Dr. Jiang argues that the expansion of foreign high value-adding activities in the upper stream of GVCs is likely to lead to a decline of domestic value-added share, leading to intensification of international and domestic distributional conflicts.

In an attempt to understand this better, I watched and compared three news shows airing simultaneously on various networks, as well as viewing the front page of the New York Times, all from the same day – October 5, 2017. ABC World News Tonight, Fox News Special Report with Bret Baier, and PBS NewsHour were the shows under scrutiny, and while each show covered a large amount of the same material, they allotted varying amounts of time to certain subjects. The University Libraries’ mission is to provide exceptional research services and resources to facilitate faculty and student success. We strive to uphold this mission in all we do. Our budget remains a challenge however, and limits our ability to provide exceptional resources. The Libraries’ materials budget has been flat or reduced every year since 2009. During that time, journal prices have increased an average of 5% to 6% per year, and book prices have increased an average of 1% to 2% per year. Because our budget has not kept pace with inflation, we have been forced to cancel over 800 …

How Do Voters Decide? A Study Of The Determinants Of Voting Behavior In Ghana, Richard Boateng Antwi

What factors influence voting behavior in Ghana? This thesis investigates this question using a survey data conducted in four regions in Ghana. A descriptive analyses and logistic regression of the data show that candidate personality and campaign promises are the most important predictors of vote choice. The study further found that ethnic and economic variables are minor features of voting behavior in Ghana: they do not influence how the majority of the electorate make voting decisions. This finding challenges the conventional view on Ghana’s elections that presume that elections are simply an ethnic census. Additionally, the finding suggests that majority …

Previous research on gender conflict and strain quantitatively measured traditional masculinity ideology from western societal norms. The current study added to the previous research and qualitatively studied masculinity performance in men from different cultures: Black, Asian, Latino. Results from this study added to masculinity research due to the mixed method approach of both quantitative and qualitative research in males from diverse groups. Information gained from this study enabled masculinity to be operationally defined by different cultural focus groups and compared in order to explore distinct masculinity expression. Separatist polities that have managed to break away from their parent states and meet the basic criteria for statehood seek other states’ formal recognition to achieve full statehood and membership of the international society. There is no established pattern to explain external recognition of statehood empirically and theoretically. Kosovo declared independence and attained widespread recognition while Somaliland, despite successful separation from Somalia, has not. What factors explain states’ recognition decisions, or the selective conferring of recognition? Introduction: Childhood Asthma is a significant public health concern worldwide. Effective management of childhood asthma requires close monitoring of disease triggers, medication compliance and symptom control. The recent growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) based devices has enabled continuous monitoring of patients. kHealth-Asthma is a knowledge-enabled semantic framework consisting of IoT enabled sensors to record patient symptoms, medication usage and their environment. For each patient, 29 diverse parameters with 1852 data points are collected daily. kHealthDash platform enables real-time visual analysis at an individual and cohort level over such high volume, high variety data.

Background: In the traditional asthma management protocol, a child meets with a clinician infrequently, once in 3 to 6 months, and is assessed using the Asthma Control Test questionnaire. This information is inadequate for timely determination of asthma control, compliance, precise diagnosis of the cause, and assessing the effectiveness of the treatment plan. To this end, the research question is: how nationalism and regional influences affect the political transitions of Bhutan and Nepal. The current study examined how over- and underestimations of ability progress with increasing experience completing a task. Prior research has demonstrated inconsistent effects when investigating the relationship between self-efficacy and performance at the within-person level of analysis, often theorizing distinct effects of over- versus underestimating one's ability level. Thus, the current study investigated the discrepancy between self-efficacy, one's belief in their capability to accomplish some task, and actual performance levels. Eating disorders are a common psychological disorder with athletes being at a higher risk. The rates of clinical and subclinical (i.e. subthreshold, partial diagnosis, or other specified feeding and eating disorder in DSM-5). There are several sport-specific risk factors that increase the prevalence rate of clinical and subclinical eating disorders and body image concerns. Several eating disorder development models exist for the general population, but one specific sport specific factor: coaches, has been left out, despite their significant impact on athletes. Using the Wason card selection task, we model how humansdecide to engage in further deliberation after generating anintuitive response. Central to our model is the Feeling ofRightness which is the fluency with which one makes adecision, and how good one feels about it. The model isimplemented in a cognitive architecture, ACT-R. A core affectmechanism and the Feeling of Rightness component are usedto drive the decision. Although there is an emerging trend towards generating embeddings for primarily unstructured data and, recently, for structured data, no systematic suite for measuring the quality of embeddings has been proposed yet. This deficiency is further sensed with respect to embeddings generated for structured data because there are no concrete evaluation metrics measuring the quality of the encoded structure as well as semantic patterns in the embedding space.
