We present the results of analyzing gait motion in first-person video taken from a commercially available wearable camera embedded in a pair of glasses. The video is analyzed with three different computer vision methods to extract motion vectors from different gait sequences from four individuals for comparison against a manually annotated ground truth dataset. Using a combination of signal processing and computer vision techniques, gait features are extracted to identify the walking pace of the individual wearing the camera as well as validated using the ground truth dataset. Our preliminary results indicate that the extraction of activity from the video …

In an effort to improve the users’ experience when accessing our institutional repository, we decided to add closed captioning to all videos. We investigated a number of options such as local streaming servers and vended products, but could not find one that could meet our needs in terms of accessibility, compatibility with our repository platform, and easy of storage and management of videos. We then decided to test YouTube as a possible solution. We were pleased to learn that YouTube had auto closed captioning/transcription, a method of merging previously transcribed text with videos posted in YouTube, and an easy method …

Our remarkable ability to process complex visual scenes is supported by a network of scene-selective cortical regions. Despite growing knowledge about the scene representation in these regions, much less is known about the temporal dynamics with which these representations emerge. We conducted two experiments aimed at identifying and characterizing the earliest markers of scene-specific processing. In the first experiment, human participants viewed images of scenes, faces, and everyday objects while event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded. We found that the first ERP component to evince a significantly stronger response to scenes than the other categories was the P2, peaking ∼220 ms …

– This study focuses on a central question: What key behavioral factors influence high school students’ compliance with preventative measures against the transmission of influenza? We use multilevel logistic regression to equate logit measures for eight precautions to students’ latent compliance levels on a common scale. Using linear regression, we explore the efficacy of knowledge of influenza, affective perceptions about influenza and its prevention, prior illness, and gender in predicting compliance. Hand washing and respiratory etiquette are the easiest precautions for students, and hand sanitizer use and keeping the hands away from the face are the most difficult. Perceptions of …
Civil Society And The Governance Of Urban Food Systems In Sub-Saharan Africa, Daniel N. Warshawsky
Civil Society And The Governance Of Urban Food Systems In Sub-Saharan Africa, Daniel N. Warshawsky
Geography Faculty Publications
Rapid urbanization of the planet has placed pressure on humanity to build sustainable, healthy, and socially just cities. In particular, key challenges associated with food access threaten the livability of the urban environment. For this reason, research on urban food systems has increased significantly, as scholars have studied the production, distribution, acquisition, consumption, and waste of food. However, key research gaps persist, as it remains unclear how urban food systems are governed and the roles that different institutions play to ensure that cities are livable. In particular, while food civil society organizations (FCSOs) have emerged as important players in urban …
