Catalogers are increasingly responsible for creating metadata for a variety of unusual items. These may be part of a library’s special collections department or interfiled with the general collection. Luckily, technical services librarians have developed a number of guidelines for cataloging these special formats. This is the fourth installment of ULA’s technical service’s round table cataloging webinar series and will focus on how to catalog broadsides and posters following format specific guidelines and standards.

Academic libraries aren’t the only institutions that care for archival materials. These unique items can often be found in public libraries, historical societies, and other cultural heritage organizations, many of which may not have trained special collections catalogers on staff. In this workshop, participants will learn how to catalog archival materials, including manuscripts, photographs, and audiovisual materials, so they can be discovered in online catalogs and databases. Both item and collection-level cataloging will be discussed, and participants will learn when and how to apply relevant metadata standards like RDA and DACS. They will then practice cataloging with examples provided by …

At Utah State University Libraries, the Digital Initiatives Unit employs up to 15, primarily undergraduate, students who contribute approximately 190 hours of labor on a weekly basis. Students work on a variety of projects related to digital exhibits, digital history collections, open educational resources (OER), and the institutional repository. Their responsibilities range from scanning and metadata creation to OER research and copyediting to occasional outreach and engagement at events. This presentation explores the benefits and challenges of student labor in library publishing efforts. Topics covered include: the quality and quantity of work that is given to students; evaluating students’ work …

This presentation shared the design and results of a mixed-methods assessment of a new library curriculum for ENGL 2010, the required English Composition course at Utah State University. Piloted with two sections of the course in fall semester 2019, this new three-session curriculum was grounded in case-based problem-based learning (CBPBL), a specific type of problem-based learning (PBL) in which students work together to solve real life scenarios and immediately apply their skills to a relevant and complex problem. Student teams used case studies to practice source evaluation, topic development, and synthesis of research in writing. Multiple assessment methods afforded us …

In 1869, John Wesley Powell led the first scientific exploration of the Colorado River. The geologic expedition and Powell's influence would help create the United States Geological Survey and the Bureau of American Ethnology. To commemorate the expedition, materials from the Utah State University Libraries Special Collections & Archives and the Government Information Collection were displayed in the Merrill-Cazier Library and the Grand County Public Library. Panels describing these historic events were displayed in the Merrill-Cazier Library and at seminars in Moab throughout Summer 2019.

Investigating Open Education And Promotion & Tenure In The United States, Becky L. Thoms, Dylan Burns, Joshua J. Thoms
Library Faculty & Staff Presentations
There are many avenues for researchers and practitioners working in higher education to become involved in the open education movement via their research (e.g., publishing in or editing open access (OA) journals), teaching (e.g., creating, adopting, or adapting open educational resources (OER) and/or engaging in open pedagogy and open educational practices), or service activities (e.g., serving on university, college, or departmental open education committees). However, the value assigned to these efforts by administrators in colleges and universities throughout the United States (US) is not always clear (Jhangiani, 2017). This points to a possible disconnect between faculty members' work in open …
Where The Sagebrush Grows: Capturing University History In Institutional Repositories, Dylan Burns
Where The Sagebrush Grows: Capturing University History In Institutional Repositories, Dylan Burns
Library Faculty & Staff Presentations
In the Spring of 2017, Utah State University's library went through a reorganization that placed its digital initiatives department under an umbrella with special collections and archives. Through this change librarians within Digital Initiatives saw new connections between their work and the work of archivists. The institutional repository (IR), once an island in the library, is becoming a showcase not just for research created on campus but for university history through collaboration with university archives. Propelled by this organizational realignment, librarians began large scale digitization projects to provide access to University commencement programs, alumni and departmental magazines, yearbooks, and student …

Building Collaborations For Student Research Through Open Access, Dylan Burns, Becky Thoms
Library Faculty & Staff Presentations
Utah State University's decade’s long tradition of undergraduate and graduate student research is a point of pride, and it’s a source of recognition of institutional and student success as well as a recruitment tool. Yet, because of the ephemeral nature of student populations, it is difficult to build relationships that encourage participation. This presentation will explore collaborations between the library and the Research and Graduate Studies office at Utah State University as an opportunity to sustain the IR through the promotion and preservation of student research. Important is the library's role in ongoing research events on campus, such as Research …

Chat reference at USU Libraries has decreased since introducing the service. In order to understand this trend, we analyzed a year’s worth of chat transcripts from August 2016 to August 2017. In addition to examining the types and timing of patron questions, we coded qualities of the chat interactions themselves. We will share how the results of our analysis might inform future changes to the chat reference service and staff training in an effort to “level up” the library’s virtual reference.
