Cedar Bend Humane Society is an animal shelter in Waterloo, Iowa that helps cats, dogs, and small pets find permanent homes. CBHS offers over a dozen different services to the public; these services include spaying and neutering, microchipping, and group visits for school aged children. I adopted my dog, Scooby, from CBHS in 2018 and he exhibited some undesirable behavior, which inspired me to focus my attention on how to extinguish avoidance-motivated aggression.

This poster presentation examines multiple research studies justifying beneficial effects of service dogs on persons with physical and mental disabilities. To better understand the positive effects of service dogs and their capabilities, a comprehensive literature review was conducted to recount firsthand validation where their assistance has been valuable to these individuals. With over fifty million people in the United States currently living with a disability and that number rapidly increasing, the need for assistance with daily tasks can be achieved with the intervention of a service dog (Iezzoni, 2011). Gender And Perceptions Of Leadership Tasks, Lydia Pena, Adam Butler

Women are underrepresented in leadership roles in organizations. This study examined student perceptions of autocratic and participative leadership tasks. There were no differences between men and women in the perceived desirability of these tasks or in their perceived ability to perform them. The results suggest that women aren’t self-selecting out of leadership due to tasks associated with the role.

Doctoral Psychology Students' Attitudes Toward Evidence-Based Practice, Jordan A. Newburg

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is using clinical judgement to apply the best evidence to clients’ cases as applicable, improves client outcomes, and aligns with healthcare standards. Practitioners may not fully engage in or understand EBP. Cultivating students’ positive attitudes towards EBP during their graduate education may increase their knowledgeable engagement in EBP later as professionals. This study investigated potential factors influencing students’ attitudes. Students with more favorable attitudes were in more interactive, research-focused, clinical programs with professors’ and self-identification with CBT orientation. Future research could explore possible causes for these findings to improve psychologists’ education and continual training.

Perceived Racial Discrimination And Sleep Patterns: The Moderating Role Of Race And Health Habits, Camille Petrich

The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating role of both race and health habits (i.e., smoking illegal substances, vaping or smoking tobacco and nicotine, or drinking alcohol) in the links between perceived racial discrimination with sleep as well as anxiety. This current study used a sample of 173 participants from a midwestern university who were undergraduate students in the fall semester of 2019 and in the spring semester of 2020. All participants self-reported their own demographic background, sleep habits, anxiety levels, perceived racial discrimination experiences, and health habit experiences through an online questionnaire. Across six studies we examined effects of various methods of consent form presentation on participants’ knowledge, attitude, and data quality. These varied methods generally had little effect on knowledge, attitude, or data quality, but shorter forms had some advantages. Future research should assess how to increase participant investment in consent forms included in online studies.

Ticket scalpers exist because ticket prices in the primary market are often set below the market equilibrium price. The question is why are prices consistently set too low? One theory says that the desire to sell complementary goods such as concert memorabilia explains why ticket price are set below equilibrium. Technological improvements, however, have rendered that theory obsolete. Economic theory still does not explain why ticket prices are frequently set too low. Perhaps the reason is simply that artists do not want to gouge their fans.

Measuring Earnings Through Performance: A Replication Of The Return To Skill Of Pga Tour Golfers, Chase A. Collins

The golfers on the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) Tour provide an opportunity to examine the relationship between performance and earnings. Using PGA Tour data from 2010 and the 2018-2019 season, this paper replicates previous studies exploring the returns to skill and changes in return to skill over time of PGA golfers. Average driving distance, average driving accuracy, greens in regulation (GIR), putts per GIR, sand saves, number of events competed in, and two interaction terms are found to be statistically significant. The idea that returns to skills for PGA golfers are changing over time is supported in this paper.

Using The Home-Underdog Theory To Test The Efficiency Of The Nfl Sports Gambling Market, Dj Loutsch

NFL sports gambling markets are efficient if one strategy is not consistently profitable year after year. The analysis in this paper examines the efficient market hypothesis using the home-underdog theory. The data were collected for home-underdogs for the last 10 NFL seasons. Important filters were applied to examine potential variations of the home-underdog theory that may be profitable. There was no variation of the home-underdog theory that was consistently profitable year after year. There were 5 different variations that were profitable in the 10 years, but they were not profitable every year. The results provide evidence that the NFL sports …

Can Doing Good Reduce Risk? Corporate Social Responsibility And Risk For Firms In Controversial Industries, Emily Iehl

A firm’s main goal is to add firm value. There are many ways to do this: increase sales, advertise, change management, and, possibly, doing good for the environment, employees, and others. The latter approach is often called corporate social responsibility. This paper tests to see if corporate social responsibility will reduce risk for a firm. There are two hypotheses created by Jo and Na (2012): the risk reduction hypothesis and the window-dressing hypothesis. Jo and Na conclude that corporate social responsibility in controversial firms can help reduce firm risk. However, my results do not show that.

Students Helping Students: Creating And Evaluating A Collaborative Service Model In The Library, Theresa Westbrock, Angie Cox

This study identifies the successes and challenges associated with the addition of a nonlibrary service desk in a university library’s learning commons. The authors wanted to know whether a training and service collaboration with an outside unit could reliably and efficiently connect students to the librarians, academic support services, and other resources that they need; and if advanced skills (including information literacy) training could be successfully built into the existing infrastructure of academic support departments. The authors identified strategies to address barriers when maintaining and improving a collaborative relationship and a dual-desk service model.

Perceptions Of The Police: The Role Of Need For Cognition And Numeracy, Carolyn Pham

The public’s perceptions of the police are critical; positive perceptions are related to people’s willingness to obey the law and cooperate with law enforcement. Past research has found that demographic variables are related to perceptions of the police. This study hypothesizes that those with a higher level of need for cognition and numeracy are more likely to view the police positively. This study included 443 U.S. residents; in addition to replicating the role of demographic variables, this study found that after controlling for demographics, perceptions of the police were positively related to need for cognition and numeracy. Unveiling Shadows: How To Optimize Shadow Detection In Hsi Through Combination Of Lidar And Histogram Thresholding, Maritza Salinas

From “multi-” to “hyper-” spectral, remote sensing capacities have improved tremendously in how we measure Earth’s unique signatures. Unfortunately, shadow detection and correction remain an issue in most images, especially those with high spatial resolution. Shadows result when direct sun light is obstructed and the spectral reflectance values for pixels in those regions decrease. Many successful approaches exist to correct this blue skew to shorter wavelengths, but it can be daunting to truly assess which approach to employ since each require different levels of priori knowledge. Death is a taboo subject in American society, yet it affects everyone at some point in life. By looking at conversations surrounding death from a sociological perspective, I study the association between conversations about death and the grief of those left behind. Using the Changing Lives of Older Couples dataset, I am conducting a secondary data analysis to study the relationship between talking about death with a spouse before death, and the denial and mental health impacts on the widow after death. Nssi Stigma Toward Adolescent Girls And Boys, Mackenzie L. Dallenbach

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a relatively new subject of attention for psychopathology researchers, and is listed as a Condition for Further Study in the DSM-5 (APA, 2013). Current research on NSSI has utilized primarily female participants, limiting generalizability. Additionally, little research has been conducted with NSSI stigma. Thus, the current study examined whether two things influenced NSSI stigma: the sex of an individual engaging in it, and participant familiarity with NSSI. The results revealed that sex did not influence stigma. Further, there was no correlation between familiarity and NSSI stigma.

Based on results of a 2018 Iowa Science Teacher Section survey, the Iowa Science Foundation of the Iowa Academy of Science funded a professional development opportunity focused on engineering design (ISF 19–01). A free one–day workshop was created for school districts in Iowa, and the first was held in fall of 2019. During this workshop, teachers learned more about engineering design, experienced engineering design activities from kindergarten through high school levels, and brainstormed facets of engineering design. The day ended with guiding teachers in writing their own engineering design activities. The workshop was successful and well–received according to a post–workshop …

Chloride Dynamics In Urban Streams: An Eastern Iowa Case Study, Rebecca L. Kauten

A series of urban stream and snowmelt samples collected 2017-2018 provide a localized understanding of seasonal chloride concentrations in urban streams and establishes baseline knowledge of conditions in Cedar Rapids and Coralville, Iowa. Results indicate both variability in chloride concentrations based on location as well as conditions under which water was sampled.

Number Of Shoes Tested During A Running Shoe Mass Perception Task May Not Influence Accuracy, James G. Saxton, Joel G. Greenya, Christopher L. Kliethermes, David S. Senchina

Commercially available running shoes differ in terms of their relative masses. It is unclear how well consumers may be able to judge mass differences from wearing alone, though previous studies suggest that perceptual outcomes may be influenced by experimental design factors such as the length of time worn. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the number of shoes used in a testing session impacts wearers’ mass perceptual accuracy. Forty-eight young adult males ran for 5 min in 4 pairs of shoes (their own running shoes plus 3 unfamiliar pairs) before being asked whether an unfamiliar running shoe …
