Re-Examining, Re-Empowering: The Effect Of Contextualizing Testimonial Theatre On Spect-Actors, Felicia Owusu-Ansah Sep 2023

Re-Examining, Re-Empowering: The Effect Of Contextualizing Testimonial Theatre On Spect-Actors, Felicia Owusu-Ansah

Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal

To be empowered, freed from rejection, silence and trauma, one may have no choice but to speak up. But how does the silenced speak in the presence of the oppressor? At this point, theatre (of testimony) became the most useful tool to break the silence among irregular returnees in Akuma, Ghana. This qualitative study article reports on the healing and empowering effects of Testimonial Theatre on spect-actors during its use for dissemination of research findings to the researched community. It aims to show how Testimonial Theatre’s effects of compassion and empathy led to the resilience of human essence, breaking silence, …

Relações Entre Teatro E Política No Trabalho Teatral De Boal No Pós-1964: A Coletivização Do Fazer Artistico Como Expressão Autoconsciente Da Produção Estética, Patricia Freitas Sep 2023

Relações Entre Teatro E Política No Trabalho Teatral De Boal No Pós-1964: A Coletivização Do Fazer Artistico Como Expressão Autoconsciente Da Produção Estética, Patricia Freitas

Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal

Relationships Between Theatre And Politics In Boal’S Post-1964 Theatrical Work: The Collectivization Of Artmaking As A Self-Conscious Expression Of Aesthetic Production, Patricia Freitas Sep 2023

Relationships Between Theatre And Politics In Boal’S Post-1964 Theatrical Work: The Collectivization Of Artmaking As A Self-Conscious Expression Of Aesthetic Production, Patricia Freitas

Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal

This essay aims to bring a historical perspective to the theatrical work carried out by Augusto Boal after the establishment of the military dictatorship in Brazil in 1964. The historical trauma generated by the coup re-dimensioned the socially engaged theatrical practice in the country. In Boal's case, it created important contradictions between his theory and practice. Along these lines, this study verified that the reflection proposed by Boal on the Brazilian scene had a broader background and was embedded in a movement of cultural criticism, with the aim of creating an aesthetic and political program of action.

O Mecanismo Da Empatia No Teatro Fórum, Ali Mansouri Sep 2023

O Mecanismo Da Empatia No Teatro Fórum, Ali Mansouri

Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal

The Mechanism Of Empathy In Forum Theater, Ali Mansouri Sep 2023

The Mechanism Of Empathy In Forum Theater, Ali Mansouri

Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal

Even though the concept of “Empathy” was mentioned in the earliest texts about performance, there has always been a dispute among theatre theorists in different eras regarding its impact on the audience. Although some have considered empathy as the basis of the theatre, others viewed it as a dangerous ground that can result in inappropriate and unhealthy feelings in the audience. Recent findings of neuroscientists have revealed that empathy (with both real people and fictional characters) is inevitable for human beings, and its unconscious mechanism exists in every mentally healthy person. I believe that this inherent ability can allow us …

Usando O Teatro Aplicado Para A Cura Coletiva E O Tratamento Do Luto Na Sala De Aula, Sarah Fahmy Sep 2023

Usando O Teatro Aplicado Para A Cura Coletiva E O Tratamento Do Luto Na Sala De Aula, Sarah Fahmy

Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal

Using Applied Theatre For Collective Healing And Grief Processing In The Classroom, Sarah Fahmy Sep 2023

Using Applied Theatre For Collective Healing And Grief Processing In The Classroom, Sarah Fahmy

Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal

At times when our mental health is equally as strained as our students, applied theatre may ground and guide us to support us turn our collective trauma into action and enable students to envision their individual and collective healing. In this article, I reflect on the process of devising C(U)VID-19: Reflections from Students of the Pandemic, a 50-minute, multi-disciplinary virtual performance, conceived and produced in under two weeks by the students in my theatre for non-majors class in 2021. I share examples of how applied theatre enabled students to lead with empathy and develop friendships while authoring their own …

The Wildcard Workbook: A Practical Guide To Jokering Forum Theatre. Contexto E Introdução, Katy Rubin, Liz Morgan, Sulu Leonimm

Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal

The Wildcard Workbook: A Practical Guide To Jokering Forum Theatre -- An Introduction And Background, Katy Rubin, Liz Morgan, Sulu Leonimm

Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal

This is a short article introducing the Wildcard Workbook, and the journey we took to translate our understanding of the core ethics of Theatre of the Oppressed into a resource for all kinds of facilitators. In our years of practice, we wished for a book we couldn’t yet find: a truly accessible, visual, and interactive guide that could prepare us to work with a community in real-time. That was the spark for the book, and the values of the project grew from there. In this essay, we reflect on our collaboration process, and on the ways this book may be …

Enfrentamentos Sem Fuga Ou Encontros E Desencontros Em Ponto De Fuga, Carolina Géa De Campos Silva

Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal

Confrontations Without Escape; Or Encounters And Disencounters At Ponto De Fuga (Vanishing Point), Carolina Géa De Campos Silva

Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal

This review was originally written as a review exercise for the Latin American Theater course, offered by the Performing Arts College at Paulista University (UNESP) in 2022, and taught by professors Patricia Freitas and Paula Autran. Based on some topics presented in class, the author unravels the Brazilian play Ponto de Fuga in its dramaturgy and creation process, while discussing the successive erasure of the history and memory of colonized peoples, more specifically in Latin America. It also stirs up reflections on the self-identification of Brazilians as Latinos. The review aims to bring into debate the relations of oppression and …

Apresentando A Pedagogia Hānai: Um Chamado Para A Equidade Na Educação Através Das Lentes Da Aanapi, Robin Brandehoff

Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal

Cowboy Cooper Goes West: Mystery Babylon And The Western Hero Archetype, Matthew Bancroft-Smithe Nov 2022

Cowboy Cooper Goes West: Mystery Babylon And The Western Hero Archetype, Matthew Bancroft-Smithe

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) at UNI

William Milton Cooper was a radio show host, author, and conspiracy theorist. Among other things, Cooper claimed insider knowledge of a plot, guided by an ancient Luciferian religious order, to consolidate nations into a socialist New World Order. Although currently unexamined in academia, Cooper’s conspiratorial influence can be found everywhere from the Oklahoma City Bombing to contemporary false flag accusations to QAnon mythology. While this influence includes shared content, Cooper’s approach to evidence, persona, and narrative framing demand attention in a world of increasingly visible conspiracy discourse. Through application of Hocker-Rushing’s western hero archetype, my research indicates that Cooper’s Mystery …

Media Suppression In Africa And The Balkans - How Economic Distribution Impacts Freedom Of The Press On An International Level, Lindsey G. Ingraham Apr 2022

Media Suppression In Africa And The Balkans - How Economic Distribution Impacts Freedom Of The Press On An International Level, Lindsey G. Ingraham

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Freedom of intellectual expression and media are human rights that the United Nations argues should be available to all people on Earth. However, we continue to see suppression of the media by various states across the globe. There is plenty of research that examines abuse of human rights, but there is a significant gap in the literature regarding what role economic distribution within a state plays. One of the most common measures of economic dispersion within states is the Gini Coefficient. This places states on a scale from 0, perfect income equality, to 1, perfect income inequality where all of …

Presidential Agenda Rhetoric In The State Of The Union Address: Obama And Trump, Danielle Goedken Apr 2022

Presidential Agenda Rhetoric In The State Of The Union Address: Obama And Trump, Danielle Goedken

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Previous research has illustrated that presidents will make many promises along the campaign trail and those promises are what build their agenda and hopefully get them elected. Once elected their agenda continues to be built through speeches. Researchers have compiled the campaign promises of previous administrations and tracked the completion of those promises. They have both tracked the completion of promises and good faith attempts at completing promises. In this paper, I analyze good faith attempts at keeping the promise on their agenda through presidential rhetoric in State of the Union Addresses. Presidents speak to Congress and the public on …

Gender Performance And Political Identity At The January 6 Capitol Insurrection, Emma Elise Newton Jan 2022

Gender Performance And Political Identity At The January 6 Capitol Insurrection, Emma Elise Newton

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The January 6 Capitol insurrection was heavily documented with recorded videos and photos, across legacy and social media. Despite engaging in criminal acts, many participants recorded themselves participating in the attack and posted their videos to Parler, a right-wing alternative to Facebook and Twitter that gained traction among the far-right, QAnon conspiracy theorists, and white supremacy groups. These social media videos detail an interesting rhetorical dynamic at play, one that is not so recognizable in legacy media: performances of sex/gender. Analyzing videos uploaded to a conservative social media landscape provides a lens into performances of gender as it intersects with …

Effects Of Perceived Reach On Ratings Of Media Bias, Quality, And Agreement, Matthew Sedlacek Jan 2022

Effects Of Perceived Reach On Ratings Of Media Bias, Quality, And Agreement, Matthew Sedlacek

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The hostile media effect refers to individuals’ tendencies to perceive seemingly neutral news coverage as biased against their stance (Vallone et al., 1985). Research has shown this effect in partisan politics, with liberals and conservatives perceiving bias in information presented from the opposing side. The current study examined the effects of liberal or conservative and small or large audience news source manipulations on liberals’ and conservatives’ perceptions of media bias and the relationship between partisan identity and perceptions of bias. Three hundred and sixty participants read a news article presented with either a Fox News, CNN, PatriotNewsDaily, or The Progressive …
