7-Layer Citation Salad—The Joy Of Identifying Distinct Ingredients And Assembling A Glorious Delight: Students As Information And Citation Creators, Barbara E. Weeg, Leila June Rod-Welch

In the 7-Layer Citation Salad critical-thinking exercise, students become apprentice chefs as they learn to create journal article citations adhering to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. The library instruction chef draws parallels to mise en place (“everything in its place”) and to assembling a structured salad as the apprentices discover the rewards of identifying each citation ingredient from articles and assembling the ingredients in the proper order. The library chef discusses the need to credit other authors for their ideas. The standard recipe may be adapted to any citation style and the number of layers modified.

A History Of Fire At Hitchcock Nature Center, Western Iowa, Reconstructed Through An Analysis Of Macroscopic Charcoal And Soil-Magnetic Properties, Christoph E. Geiss, Nicole E. Towner

We analyzed soil-magnetic properties and macroscopic charcoal abundances for two soil profiles located in Hitchcock Nature Center (HNC), Honey Creek, Iowa. Both profiles are located on valley bottoms in the Loess Hills of western Iowa and developed in redeposited Peoria loess. Site HNC 15D is located on an elevated stream terrace and contains a moderately well-developed modern soil. Site HNC 15G is located on a valley floor and consists of a poorly developed modern soil and a series of buried soil horizons. Both sites record consistently low charcoal concentrations of 0.5 mm2 /g in prehistoric deposits. While site HNC 15D …

I was attending Kansas State University at the time, a predominantly conservative school in a predominantly conservative state. In the weeks leading up to election night, students, faculty, and staff at the University lived with strong feelings of anticipation. The two candidates stood in stark contrast to one another. Elected officials come to office from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, and researchers have sought to discover how these characteristics affect the policy making process. There is a gap in the literature pertaining to whether educational attainment of policymakers influences education policy. This research analyzes the educational attainment of state lawmakers and whether higher levels of educational achievement influence the legislative support of public universities as measured by budget appropriations to those schools. Results show there is a statistically significant positive relationship between educational attainment of lawmakers and support of post-secondary education. The purpose of this study was to analyze graphic literature for respectful and authentic portrayals of immigrants to help librarians and classroom teachers build culturally inclusive library collections. The study sought to answer the question of how immigrants are portrayed in elementary level graphic texts. Nine books were chosen utilizing reviews from authoritative sources along with the Wilson’s Children’s Collection and Wilson’s Middle and Junior High Core Collection databases to ensure the study was comprised of high-quality literature. Trauma is inevitable for many of the students served in school buildings. Nearly 35 million children have experienced one or multiple ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences). This qualitative case study reports the influence book clubs have on the reading motivation of third through fifth grade students, including reluctant readers, and examines how book clubs can be used as a reading promotion tool to enhance the reading culture of the school library program. Forty-one third through fifth grade students and their teacher librarian from a small Pre-K through eighth grade private school in Midwestern suburb met via Zoom in separate grade level book club meetings once during the spring 2020 semester. It is well demonstrated that service-learning positively impacts a variety of student outcomes. However, methodological limitations have contributed to a lack of clear understanding of the mechanisms through which these effects occur. Additionally, little research has connected information literacy instruction explicitly with outcomes in service-learning courses. The present study used a pre-/post-test design to investigate cognitive outcomes, including critical thinking, using the Problem-Solving Analysis Protocol (P-SAP). Fifty-nine students from an undergraduate family services course participated. This qualitative content analysis study examines the representation of LGBTQ characters in 10 young adult literature published in 2019 in light of rising numbers of self-harm and suicide among youth who identify as LGBTQ. Novels were identified using the WorldCat Online Database and the search delimiters of year of publication, LGBTQ, young adult, and fiction yielded 30 novels. Every third novel was randomly selected, narrowing the sample. This study examines how the Western media frames its coverage of Africa and this impact on Westerners’ views of Africa. To develop the hypothesis and provide the data needed to answer the research questions, I reviewed the literature on framing, the determinants of international news coverage, as well as international media coverage. Newspapers were my data sources, and using LexisNexis with the key word “Africa,” I searchedthe online news service of the Associated Press(AP). Evidence-based practice (EBP) in psychology requires use of clinical judgement to apply the best evidence to each client’s case (APA Presidential Taskforce on Evidence-Based Practice, 2006), but practitioners may not fully engage in EBP given low usage of evidence-based treatments or manuals (Becker et al., 2013; Johnson et al., 2016; Steir, Lasota, & Christensen, 2007). Some practitioners and students misunderstand EBP (Luebbe, Radcliffe, Callands, Green, & Thorn, 2007; Wilson et al., 2009).
