In Memoriam: George Knaphus, Lois H. Tiffany

George Knaphus, 75, died Saturday, 20 May 2000, after a two year battle with lymphoma. He was born at McCallsburg, Iowa and resided on a farm near there except during his WWII service years and his undergraduate college years at UNI until moving to Ames in 1998. He graduated from McCallsburg High School in 1942, served in the U.S. Army from 1943-45 in the 112th Infantry 28th division in Europe, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, receiving the Bronze Star. He graduated with a B.S. in education from Iowa State Teachers College in 1949, earning master and doctorate …

Successful maize (Zea mays 1.) breeding programs are based on specific heterotic patterns. The Iowa Stiff Stalk Synthetic x Lancaster Sure Crop heterotic pattern is widely exploited in U.S. maize breeding programs. Alternative U.S. heterotic patterns have been suggested, but they have received limited attention and improvement. The objectives of this study were to evaluate cultivar crosses between Leaming and Midland Yellow Dent cultivars before and after inbred progeny selection and to assess their potential as an alternative U.S. heterotic pattern. Grain yield had a midparent heterosis value of 4.9% before selection and 17.8% in the third cycle of selection. …

Myxomycetes Of Big Bend National Park, Texas, Lois H. Tiffany, George Knaphus

Seventy species of Myxomycetes have been collected directly in the field or observed later in the laboratory from field materials in moist chambers from Big Bend National Park, Texas. Collections were made over a 10 year period, 1989-1997 and 1999, during intensive seven-day fungus collecting trips to Big Bend in late September each year. McGraw (1968) in an earlier study of Texas Myxomycetes had reported 28 species from Big Bend, some of which were also found in this study. A total of 81 species are reported from the park. The music and English departments at Mormon Trail Jr./Sr. High School in Garden Grove, Iowa requested a bibliography of young adult fiction related to music as a theme or important character so that teachers and students could choose a story to read when team teaching music and reading. The purpose of this paper is to review existing literature and research on peer mediation ip schools. A critical review is necessary due to the increasing popularity of peer mediation programs despite limited empirical evidence to support their usage. Examining the strengths and weaknesses of previous research is an important part of establishing program effectiveness and overcoming barriers to successful implementation. A critique of the research and implications for future research are also provided.

The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of a four-week intervention program on the development of healthy lifestyle practices among employees at Albert Lea Medical Center. Specifically, the study was designed to investigate changes in subjects' predicted health risk age after participation in a four-week worksite health promotion program at ALMC. The intervention program consisted of the following wellness components: physical, emotional, occupational, intellectual, spiritual, and social. The study was designed to answer the question of how the "July Challenge" would effect the risk age of each participant.

This study was an investigation of important content for undergraduate graphic communications programs in four-year colleges and universities. The findings of this study can help educational professionals as they design curriculum, equip laboratories, and recruit faculty.

Subject categories and content items were initially identified by a review of literature. These content items were then further refined and rated on level of importance by a panel of experts. Modified subject categories and content items were then sent to the panel a second time for rating. Through this process, 15 subject categories and 68 content items were identified.

The purpose of this study is to examine Japanese women's experiences, to interpret the data within a feminist and sociological framework, and, finally, to develop a theoretical understanding of Japanese women who have studied in the United States, and returned to Japan. Unlike groups in the majority of earlier studies, these women are neither children of Japanese corporate employees nor their wives. In this research I contend that the arguments for drug-free workplaces are framed within a narrative of science that lends authenticity to the recurring themes that drug testing promotes the health, safety, and productivity of the American workforce. The sense of authenticity effectively delimits the discourse of drug testing and presents the complexities of drug abuse in binary oppositions that contribute to normalizing the behavior of all individuals, not just those who abuse drugs. I suggest that the process of normalization reproduces the delimitation of discourse and provides justifications for introducing drug testing into areas of society beyond the walls …

As the counseling profession moves into the 21st Century a greater emphasis is being placed on multicultural and spiritual issues. It is difficult to see how the two entities can be separated. When counselors ignore that a client is Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, or Christian with the unspoken assumption that religion is irrelevant .to their issues, this may jeopardize the forming of an effective therapeutic relationship (Burke, et al., 1999). Knowledge of religion and spiritual beliefs of ethnic groups can help professionals provide care that is culturally specific and sensitive to the beliefs of the individual (Bibbins, 2000).

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between individual factors and punitive attitudes toward juvenile offenders. The individual factors examined were attributional style, authoritarianism, anxiety, self-esteem, the Five-Factor model of personality, and gender. It was hypothesized that possessing a punitive attributional style, maintaining authoritarian beliefs, and being male would predict punitive attitudes toward adolescent offenders. I also examined the effects of age of the offender and severity of the crime on attributions and punishment decisions. College students (N = 185) at a Midwestern university completed questionnaire packets in partial fulfillment of their introductory psychology course requirements. …

The present study is an empirical cross-cultural investigation of the speech act of correction in Egyptian Arabic and American English. The purpose of the study is to examine how and why Egyptians and U.S. Americans modify the illocutionary force of their corrections in terms of mitigation and aggravation in different speech situations. A Discourse Completion Task/Test (OCT) was used to elicit corrections from 30 Arabic-speaking Egyptians and 30 English-speaking U.S. Americans. This paper is a review of parenting styles relative to the importance of childrearing practices. Its primary focus is to identify and examine parenting styles, which impacts childrearing methods. The authoritarian, permissive, and authoritative methods were identified with strengths and weaknesses compared.

From the comparison, it was determined that the authoritative parenting style provides the most success for childrearing in today's changing American society. The conclusion of the paper offers guidelines and suggestions to parents on establishing this childrearing method.

Several reasons for why the gender wage gap exists have been proposed. These include differences in education between men and women, differences in career paths, and bias against women in the workplace. Another potential explanation is that women simply expect to earn less than men do and they enter a job with lower pay expectations than men. This lower pay expectation may result in lower actual pay for women because they will be less likely to engage in pay seeking behaviors, such as asking for higher pay at hire and aggressively seeking raises than men. The major aim of this research was to determine whether or not young adults are reading books from recommended reading lists. The study was conducted on a sample of 801 students in grades six through twelve who were administered a questionnaire survey designed to determine what young adults are reading and why they read. Overall, the data was quite consistent with similar studies that have been done. Adolescents' perspectives of their parents' divorce were studied to gain an understanding of the impact of parental divorce on adolescents. Subjects from three ethnicities, European-American, Latino-American, and African-American, were recruited by school counselors. Subjects were placed in homogenous groups by ethnicity and two one-and-a-half hour semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted. Interviews were audio taped and transcribed. Transcripts were evaluated by three independent readers, resulting in the identification of eight themes relating to the impact of parental divorce on subjects.
