Coming Out : Implications For Counselors Working With Gay, Lesbian, And Bisexual Clients, Eric L. Rhodes

A considerable amount of research has stated that gays and lesbians utilize mental health counseling services at a high rate. Therefore it is very likely that counselors encounter lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) clients. This research focuses on how the sexual orientation of the counselor affects the counseling process when working with LGB clients. In particular, this paper will discuss how the sexual orientation of the counselor facilitates or inhibits client identity development and the coming out process.

Although attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder constitutes 33 to 50% of mental health referrals for children, an increasing number of researchers has begun to question the validity of ADHD as a legitimate diagnosis. Eberstadt in her 1999 review stated, "Society has changed since the mid-1980s to view what may be normal childhood activity as lack of behavioral compliance" (p.1). Could the prevalence of ADHD simply be an increasingly active society's response to normal, active childhood behavior? In this issue, the Iowa Academy of Science honors three of our colleagues who passed away in 2000. Duane Isely, Larry Eilers, and George Knaphus shared many of the same interests. All three were botanists, although George's research on fungi and heterotrophic protistans relegated him to the botany departments only by default. However, more importantly, all three were teachers. I believe that one of the lessons that they would have taught was the need to carefully document present patterns if we are to understand the future. However, many biologists poorly support this concept today.

Anorexia nervosa is a chronic and sometimes fatal illness characterized by physical and psychological complications. Although no etiology for this illness has been determined, this paper presents a psychological etiology based on a synthesis of both traditional and current literature. The influence of culture, the therapeutic alliance, and client resistance are also considered. Relapse is common and the illness may last for many years. The health care community has addressed the complexity and chronicity of this illness by using a multi-component approach that includes psychoeducation, cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic interventions, family therapy, and psychopharmacology.

Larry came to botany along an unusual route. His first college degree was in engineering. After a stint at secondary teaching Larry worked at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, then returned to UNI (SCI then) and took a master's degree in biology, He continued his study at the University of Iowa under Dr. Robert Thorne and took his Ph.D. in 1964. He did the flora of the Iowan Surface (the Iowan Drift in those days). He taught at Syracuse University and University of Indiana at Terra Haute before joining the faculty of the University of Northern Iowa.

Factors Associated With Occurrence And Density Of Wetland Birds In The Prairie Pothole Region Of Iowa, Steve E. Fairbairn, James J. Dinsmore

Wetlands within wetland complexes in northwestern, north-central, and central Iowa were surveyed for bird use in 1997 and 1998. Species occurrence, species richness, and density of nesting species were related to wetland habitat variables. A habitat diversity index measuring the evenness of distribution of the different habitats within a wetland was the best predictor of species richness in both years. The habitat diversity index was also the best predictor of the occurrence of individual species in both 1997 and 1998. Eight of 11 species (7 3%) in 1997 and 13 of 18 species (72%) in 1998 had greater densities in …

An experimental rotenone-impregnated pelleted (approximately 10 mg/pellet) bait was tested in force-feeding and field-feeding experiments as a method of control for common carp (Cyprinus carpio). Mortality rates of force-fed fish ranged from less than 40% when fed one pellet to 100% when fed more than 10 pellets. Mortality occurred within 48 h. Mortality rates of control fish did not exceed 10%. In reservoir feeding trials in 1994 and 1995, carp were fed for 2-3 weeks on a non-toxic, vegetable-based bait dispensed by automatic feeders, followed by one feeding of the bait with rotenone added. The distribution and status of Iowa's fishes were last extensively described in Iowa Fish and Fishing (Harlan et al. 1987). Since then, numerous fish collections have been made in Iowa's interior and bordering rivers and streams. Excluding non-native species, there have been three documented accounts of new fish species distributional records in Iowa since 1987. In this paper, I describe new collections of crystal darter (Crystallaria asprella) and bluntnose darter (Etheostoma chlorosomum) from the Mississippi River. Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] response to strip-intercropping with corn (Zea may L.) and oat (Avena Jativa L.) interseeded with nondormant alfalfa (Medicago Jativa L.) may be affected by soil moisture. A three-crop strip-intercropping system of corn, soybean and oat interseeded with nondormant alfalfa was established to determine the effect of tillage system and row position on soil water content and grain yield in the soybean strip. Duane Isely, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Department of Botany, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, died on 6 December 2000. Dr. Isely was an outstanding plant taxonomist with expertise in other fields as well, especially in seed technology and weed identification and control. He was born in Bentonville, Arkansas, on 24 October 1918 into a family of academicians. His father, Dwight Isely, was professor and later Dean of Agriculture at the University of Arkansas, and his mother, Blessie Elise Dort Isely, also taught at the University of Arkansas and eventually received her Ph.D.

Identification And Distribution Of The Treefrogs Hyla Versicolor And Hyla Chrysoscelis In Iowa, Catherine E. C. Oberfoell, James L. Christiansen

Historically, the tetraploid and diploid species pair of gray treefrogs, Hyla versicolor and Hyla chrysoscelis, were mapped collectively in Iowa because no macroscopic morphological characteristics useful in recognizing the two species had been found. The present study reports identification and separation of the species by counts of nucleoli in the palpebral membrane of the eye and by measurement of scanning electron micrographs of toepad epithelial projections. Subsequent morphometric data confirm that the two species are morphologically distinct in Iowa but that overlap in characters continues to make macroscopic morphology unreliable for identifying individuals. This study evaluated the impact of using low-saturated-fat soybean {Glycine max (L.) Merr.} oil on the saturated fat content of school menus. Seventy-six weekly menus were obtained from the Iowa Department of Education during School Meals Initiative reviews for the 1996-1997 school year. Three modifications were performed on school menus using the Nuttikids computer program: Low-saturated- fat (LSF) soybean oil replaced traditional vegetable oil in menu items; LSF soybean oil was substituted for traditional vegetable oil, solid fats, and egg yolks in recipes; and a menu simulation was conducted where oils and solid fats used in menu items were …

Species Specific Odds Of Occurrence Of Blackspot Among Fish From The Maple River In Western Iowa, John W. Mellen

Odds ratio analysis was used to evaluate the relative likelihood of occurrence of blackspot (Neascus pyriformil, Chandler) infections among 14 species of fish collected from the Maple River in Buena Vista and Ida Counties in western Iowa. Prevalence estimates ranged from 0% to 47.4% with a mean prevalence of 11.9%. The rank ordering of odds ratios of infection allowed the species to be categorized as those with risks greater than, less than, and not different from average risk to infection within the Maple River sample. A botanical survey of the vascular flora of the "planning and zoning jurisdiction" of the city of Ames, Iowa (i.e., the area within a boundary 3.2 km beyond the current city limits) was compiled from 1990 to 2000. During this survey, 916 taxa (71 % native) were encountered within chis boundary. Literature reviews and a survey of Iowa State University's Ada Hayden Herbarium for specimens that had been collected in Ames since 1859 add 204 taxa to the flora. This total of 1,120 taxa exceeds the number of taxa known from any comparable area (including counties) in Iowa. We produced …
