Building Citizenship: Service-Learning And Student Learning, William D. Morgan Jun 2002

Building Citizenship: Service-Learning And Student Learning, William D. Morgan

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Even the most casual observer of the American news media could walk away with the impression that there are hosts of negative trends, ranging from a drop in the percentage of people who vote, to an increase in political alienation. Some of these are the result of marketing efforts conducted by groups who have a vested interest in making things look worse, and some of this may be the result of the type of news that is covered, with the guiding philosophical perspective being "if it bleeds it leads." Nonetheless, these problems are real. As Jim Wallis (1994) notes, '''Things …

Toward A More Comprehensive Understanding Of Peer Maltreatment: Studies Of Relational Victimization, Nikki R. Crick, Juan F. Casas, David A. Nelson

Psychology Faculty Publications

Although many past studies of peer maltreatment have focused on physical victimization, the importance of an empirical focus on relational victimization has only recently been recognized. In relational victimization, the perpetrator attempts to harm the target through the manipulation of relationships, threat of damage to them, or both. We review what is currently known about relational victimization with three issues in mind: (a) developmental changes in the manifestation of relational victimization, (b) gender differences in the likelihood of being victimized, and (c) evidence that relational victimization is harmful.

Service Learning As Scholarship In Teacher Education, Alice M. Buchanan, Shelia C. Baldwin, Mary E. Rudisill Jun 2002

Service Learning As Scholarship In Teacher Education, Alice M. Buchanan, Shelia C. Baldwin, Mary E. Rudisill

Service Learning, General

This article describes how two teacher education service-learning programs illustrate alternative interpretations of scholarship. A tutoring-mentoring program in a teaching oriented masters institution and a motor skill development program in a land grant doctoral-research institution are described relative to how each illustrates forms of scholarship as interpreted by Boyer ( 1990). We discuss how these forms of scholarship the scholarship of discovery, integration, teaching, and application--relate to stated institutional mission and evaluation practices. Service-learning experiences for preservice teachers can have the multiple benefits of promoting an ethic of service and social responsibility, demonstrating excellence in teacher education, and exemplifying scholarly …

Assessing Toddlers' Problem-Solving Skills Using Play Assessment: Facilitation Versus Non-Facilitation, Leslie J. Mccaslin May 2002

Assessing Toddlers' Problem-Solving Skills Using Play Assessment: Facilitation Versus Non-Facilitation, Leslie J. Mccaslin

Student Work

Play assessment is rapidly emerging in the field of cognitive assessment in young children. One aspect of play assessment involves the identification of the types and levels of problem-solving skills children possess. Information about a child’s degree of problem-solving skills could aid school psychologists in understanding the child’s level of cognitive development. Research in the area of play assessment has not focused as much attention on problem solving as it has on other components of play. More research is needed in order to determine if a free play session or an adult-facilitated session is better for assessing a child’s problem-solving …

Psychology Faculty Publications

The time course of structural changes in fungiform papillae was analyzed in rats that received unilateral chorda tympani nerve transection at 10 days of age. Morphological differences between intact and denervated sides of the tongue were first observed at 8 days postsection, with an increase in the number of fungiform papillae that did not have a pore. In addition, the first papilla with a filiform‐like appearance was noted on the denervated side at 8 days postsectioning. By 11 days after surgery, the total number of papillae and the number of papillae with a pore were significantly lower on the transected …

Navigating The Shoals Of Civic Education With Service-Learning: Ethical, Moral, And Political Constraints On Transformative Education, Don Hill Apr 2002

Navigating The Shoals Of Civic Education With Service-Learning: Ethical, Moral, And Political Constraints On Transformative Education, Don Hill

Civic Engagement

American democracy is threatened by an accelerating trend of disengagement from the fundamental responsibilities of citizenship. This disengagement is growing in all segments of society but is most pronounced in youth and young adults which makes it even more troubling. Many thoughtful educators argue persuasively that high quality service-learning can and should become a resource for tackling this problem, that it can stimulate youth to become active democratic citizens. They are, in my judgment, correct, but navigating the shoals of civic education with service-learning is difficult.

The Relationships Between Biodata And Personality: How Different Is Different?, Lindsay A. Bousman Apr 2002

The Relationships Between Biodata And Personality: How Different Is Different?, Lindsay A. Bousman

Student Work

The relationships between personality measures and biodata measures were examined using a measure of the Big Five Factors of personality, and a newly created biodata measure. Each measure was used to predict academic achievement and job satisfaction. The biodata measure was created to mimic a factor structure similar to the five factors of personality, to allow a better comparison of the two measures. However, the biodata items were original (with combinations of previously used original items), and were developed for use in this study. Biodata items are typically multiple-choice, situational, and historical in nature, whereas personality items are typically based …

Interpersonal Forgiveness In Elementary School-Aged Children, Susan M. Goss

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to extend the adolescent and adult research and assess how forgiveness develops in elementary school-aged children. Sixty-three children aged 7 to 12 reported how willing they would be to forgive three types of transgressions (emotional, physical, and property) involving an accidental or deliberate act, with or without an apology, and of either low or high severity. In addition, empathy, prosocial behavior, and religiosity were measured. Age, empathy, prosocial behavior, and religiosity were not related to willingness to forgive as had been expected. However, gender differences were found, with boys reporting a greater willingness to …

A New Vigilance: Identifying And Reducing The Risks Of Environmental Terrorism, Elizabeth L. Chalecki Feb 2002

A New Vigilance: Identifying And Reducing The Risks Of Environmental Terrorism, Elizabeth L. Chalecki

Political Science Faculty Publications

Terrorism is a constant and fearful phenomenon, as America has learned to its recent and terrible cost, and like the nine-headed hydra of ancient mythology, as soon as one group or method is terminated, more spring up to take its place. Environmental terrorism adds a new dimension to this phenomenon, identifying the target as a natural resource or environmental feature. At a time when populations all over the world are increasing, the existing resource base is being stretched to provide for more people, and is being consumed at a faster rate. As the value and vulnerability of these resources increases, …

Measuring Water Bell-Being: Water Indicators And Indices (Chapter 4), Peter H. Gleick, Elizabeth L. Chalecki, Arlene Wong

Political Science Faculty Publications

This chapter reviews methods for assessing the relationship between freshwater resources and human well-being through the development of indicators and indices. It examines single-factor measures like access to clean water, sanitation services, and per capita availability, as well as multifactor indices that integrate economic, environmental, and social variables. Case studies include the Falkenmark Water Stress Index, Basic Human Needs measure, Water Resources Vulnerability Index, and Water Poverty Index. The authors highlight the usefulness of these tools for policy, planning, and public awareness, while emphasizing limitations such as data gaps, changing definitions, scale mismatches, and the difficulty of aggregating diverse measures. …

Water And Space (Water Briefs), Elizabeth L. Chalecki Jan 2002

Water And Space (Water Briefs), Elizabeth L. Chalecki

Political Science Faculty Publications

This chapter explores the discovery, origins, and significance of water beyond Earth. It reviews theories of how Earth obtained its water—ranging from volcanic outgassing to delivery by comets, meteorites, and “cosmic snowballs.” Scientific missions have detected evidence of water or ice on the Moon, Mars, and Jupiter’s moons (notably Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto), as well as in interstellar clouds, distant planetary systems, and even other galaxies via water-vapor megamasers. These findings have implications for future space exploration, as in-situ water could supply life support and fuel, and for astrobiology, since liquid water is a key prerequisite for life as we …

National Survey Shows Half-Century Trend Away From Democrats, Gregory A. Petrow

Political Science Faculty Publications

The partisan realignment in the South is a well-known fact. The 20th century began with the South solidly in the hands of the Democratic Party. This was true because the Southern Democratic Party look positions congruent with the Southern electorate's public policy preferences: namely, a states-centered view of government and an opposition to more egalitarian racial Policy.

The Privatization Of Water And Water Systems (Chapter 3), Peter H. Gleick, Gary Wolff, Elizabeth L. Chalecki, Rachel Reyes Jan 2002

The Privatization Of Water And Water Systems (Chapter 3), Peter H. Gleick, Gary Wolff, Elizabeth L. Chalecki, Rachel Reyes

Political Science Faculty Publications

This chapter examines the global trend toward transferring water supply and management from public to private control. It outlines drivers such as financial pressures, efficiency goals, and ideological shifts, while reviewing diverse privatization models—from service contracts to full concessions. The text highlights potential benefits, including improved infrastructure and capital access, but focuses on significant risks: inequitable access, rising costs, weakened public oversight, loss of water rights, and environmental neglect. Case studies from Argentina, Bolivia, and the United States illustrate both successes and failures. The authors conclude that privatization can only work equitably when guided by strong governance, transparent contracts, public …

Images Of Service: Reflections From The Campus Compact Midwest Collaboration Community Service Directors Fellowship Program 2000-2001, Beth Blissman, Jay Cooper

Higher Education

We Americans are people of the journey. From boats across the Atlantic by way of Pilgrim quest, to the holocaust of the middle passage, to classic travelogues such as On the Road or Travels with Charley (in Search of America}, the stamp of the mythic journey seems to be indelibly planted on our national psyche. And as we all know, journeys have several staple elements: anticipation, consumption of a variety of foods at exorbitant prices, wrestling with a roadmap, and children in the back crying, "Are we there yet?" A quintessentially American component to the journey, however, is the postcard.

Service-Learning On American Campuses: Challenges For Pedagogy And Practice, Sandra Enos

Higher Education

Over the past twenty years, there has been a steady increase in the number of students involved in community service and service-learning programs on college campuses. A recent report by Campus Compact (2003) noted that 33 percent of college students on its member campuses were engaged in community service programs during the last academic year. Surveys by Compact found that eleven percent of higher education faculty offered an average of 30 service-learning courses on campuses (Campus Compact 2003, 2003a). Increasingly, institutions of higher education are supporting these efforts by establishing community service and service-learning offices, staffing them, and by providing …
